Our first meeting as lovers was short. Brief. Confusing and awkward. Afterwards neither of us wanted to look at the other. We weren't sure what we did or if we even liked it. The truth was we were driven into each other's arms by a cherub of a different sort who preferred the name Captain Morgan to Cupid. But be it by fate or by fermented grains, the end result was the same.
Darkness. Nakedness. Frantic groping in the heat as our tongues sought to meet. Breathing and then, the moment. The moment comes when for a brief instant, the human side re-emerges and grabs for control from the animal feelings that drive your thrusts and moans. When both of you realize you just want to be held, to be close, to feel another human being's soft breath on your bare skin.
Then nature reasserts itself and the desire to finish roars in both of you. The look fades from your eyes and it's back to the business of thrusting as some half echo in the back of your mind wonders "did we just have an understanding?"
It was 3 months later when I saw her next. We would both rather have walked on, but she was with my sister, who, being eager to keep everything normal, asked if I'd like to join them for coffee.
Neither of us wanted to speak about that night. We talked some about the weather, how I was doing in my new job. She asked if I was seeing anyone. I told her no. She offered to bake me some cookies sometime, but I could tell it was just idle conversation, and that she was no more eager to bake for me then I was to go and pick them up.
The day grew late, and I finished the last of my coffee, grimacing as the now cold bitter taste washed over my tongue.
"I'll see you some other time" she started to say. Nodding I slowly got to my feet while reaching for the bill.
Our hands brushed. Lingered for a moment. Then pulled quickly away. Any outsider would think hidden springs had uncoiled in both our hands.
I coughed shyly, and tried to explain how I would pay, mumbling and stuttering in the half word-half redfaced language only the lovestricken know, and the heartbroken try to forget.
And she gently cupped her hand under my chin, raising it up gently till my downcast eyes met hers.
You know, I've read so many times people talking about "getting lost in someone's eyes". I've always chalked it up to weakly silly people, trying to justify the beauty of their attachment to someone in a world that doesn't offer much better then air to breathe and water to drink.
But now I think I understand. It's not the color that gets you. It's the understanding. Something says, "I'm facing the world with you." You lose yourself for an instant realizing that, just for that moment, a moment you try your hardest to burn into your mind for an eternity, just for that moment, you're not alone.
Looking into the deep blue eyes that so perfectly matched my own, I thought how I almost threw it all away. I was ashamed of our first meeting when I should have been embracing it, and the beauty it foreshadowed. My sister gave us a disgusted look as I bent in to kiss her, tongue and all, but I didn't care. Fuck her. Some things are more important then whether or not family approves.
For the 24 years I'd known her, everyone had always called her Debbie.
That night I took her into my bed again. Sober. She was my first woman, and I'd decided that even though I was still young, she would be my only, from that day forward.
You see I've never called her Debbie.
Until that final night, she was always...mom.

In all honesty, I didn't like the ending at all. I like twists, but this one seemed ridiculous. Still, I enjoyed every word of it up until that point...especially the "understanding in the eyes" bit, and the "mumbled language that only lovers understand" part.
