UNITED STATES NATURE PRESERVE
After passing through the sweep again and changing out of their suits, Yutaka led them down the main road to the large residential building. Dr. Feyman let his gaze wander and noticed for the first time just how many people were on the island, civilian and military alike. Yutaka spoke as he punched in a 6 digit number on the keypad outside the door.
"Today was a rest day for the scientists and so most of them are either at the beach or in the rooms getting sleep. There is a full time science staff of around 20, add the 150 or so military men spread out over the two islands and it can get a bit crowded. Thankfully the Marines are content to sleep in the tents. We had to make extra room in here for the small staff as it is."
Once inside the building, Dr. Feyman stopped a moment to enjoy the air conditioning positioned right above the door. This weather was something that he would never be able to get used too.
"Since I am project lead out here, I have the luxury of a rather spacious room. Come, the elevator is broken. Taking the stairs is good for you anyway old friend."
Dr. Feyman smiled, thinking back on his days studying at MIT. Yutaka and him had become good friends, even after Yutaka dropped out and started working for different government agencies as a freelance scientist.
Yutaka's room was actually the size of a small one bedroom apartment. Kitchen and living room were one and the same and the furnishings were simple and plain, a habit that Dr. Feyman remembered about Yutaka. He hated opulence.
"You still drink whisky Richard?" Yutaka was pouring himself something dark with no ice.
"My only vice." Dr. Feyman replied while taking a seat on the small sofa in the middle of the room.
After handing Dr. Feyman his drink, Yutaka opened a green cassette case and placed its contents in the player below a 15 inch television across from the couch. Seating himself on the arm of the couch Yutaka took a hard pull of his drink and went to make another. He spoke from the kitchen as the video started to play.
"These are all of the subjects' examinations in a timeline from their injection of one of the modified strains. The remote is on the table there if you wish to forward through some of it.
Dr. Feyman nodded absently as he watched. On the screen, a young white male, obviously a Marine walked in front of the camera. Behind was a concrete wall and there were gym mats on the floor. The young man stated his name and rank and was answering some simple questions from a person just off screen. After the Marine answered the questions another Marine took his place and the cycle repeated. After nine more young men went through the same question and answer period, the screen cut off for a second and opened back up to show all ten men standing in a line. At a sharp order from someone off screen they all dropped to the ground and began doing pushups. As the exercise continued, Dr. Feyman glanced back at Yutaka who rolled his eyes.
"Just watch Richard. Keep in mind what you are seeing"
Dr. Feyman noticed right away that all ten men were doing push-ups in perfect rhythm, both in general and with each other. There was not even an eye-blink of difference in their speed. After about 5 minutes, it hit him.
"How long do they go?"
"Well during this first trial all of them went for at least fifteen minutes straight, never slowing down or stopping. Being Marines they can do an average of fifty push-ups a minute. At fifteen minutes that would average out to seven hundred and fifty push-ups nonstop. These men were all doing sixty seven push-ups a minute exactly. One-thousand five push-ups non-stop. After around fifteen minutes a few of them started slowing down. The first person to stop was after eighteen minutes. The last was after twenty five and a half. His meter read one thousand three hundred and eleven."
Dr. Feyman felt his heart beating a little faster just thinking about it. He knew what he saw, but his mind could not comprehend it.
"The virus did this? How long before this did they have the injection? Where there any side effects? That must put tremendous strain on their bodies. Were any of them sick..."
"Slow down Richard. Yes this was an effect of the injection of one of the modified strains. The injections were done 24 hours before this tape was made. As far as their bodies were concerned, it was as if they had just run up a flight of stairs. BP was steady; heart rhythm was fast but quickly lowered. Hell, most of them didn't even work up a sweat. We think the only reason they stopped was because of muscle fatigue."
"What did they have to say about what they just did?"
'That is also very strange; all of them had no idea of the feat they had just pulled off. They just said they felt their bodies could do more, so they did. They were very nonchalant about it."
"Jesus..."
"Not quite, but there is more. You asked about side effects, let me show you this."

UNITED STATES NATURE PRESERVE AND
RESEARCH FACILITY
BIO-LEVEL 4 LAB
Dr. Swane glanced at the clock on the wall of the main lab room. She had been in here for over 8 hours and was ready to retire. Since Dr. Feinstien had tried to escape with three samples over a month ago she had been working overtime to make up of it. His research was the keystone to unlocking the secrets about the 12 original strains that had been recovered from the bodies of the Nature Preserve staff. She heard from one of the Marines that he had been killed while trying to swim off the Island with his latest findings.
Pity, she thought. With those three samples she might have been weeks ahead of her own research. While it was almost done now, she knew that much time had been lost by Walters' death. She was also saddened personally, because Walter Feinstien had been a friend.
Taking the last tube and placing it back in the cold storage room she jumped at hearing the outer doors hiss open. She knew that Dr. Feyman and Mr. Saito had retired a few hours earlier. Undoubtedly, Richard knew all about the virus now. She saw his face when she had been outside getting fresh air. His eyes were glazed and he was speaking feverishly to Yutaka as they walked back and forth outside the living quarters.
All of the other scientists would be resting. She glanced through the small inch-thick plexi-glass port hole in the door. Through the fog in the room she couldn't see anything. After making sure that all of the racks were secure she opened the door to the main lab area and noticed the outer door was wide open. She knew that it should have closed on its own and saw that the green lights on the panel to the right was still working.
Disengaging her suits air supply hose, she made her way around the counters and tables toward the front of the lab.
"Hello? Is someone there? This door needs to be closed." She was yelling through her suit, but was sure her voice carried through to the reception area.
As she neared the door she noticed that the door to the outside was open as well. Small sparks were shooting through the portal and into the reception room. Quickly she ran through the main lab door and slammed her hand down on the alarm button that would force the doors to shut and raise enough noise to wake up the entire Island. As the alarm klaxon boomed in her ear, she spun around and watched as the outside door began to forcibly attempt to close. She ran through the clean sweep and waited the full 30 seconds before she began taking her suit off. She heard the outside door slam shut with a final boom.
Out of her suit she was able to hear the hydraulics in the door to the main lab whine as they tried to close. She looked to the ground and saw the ruined remains of the door thrown against the left wall.
The entire lab was hot.
She panicked, knowing she was safer inside a suit and quickly started putting it back on when she heard a noise behind her.
She spun around and looked into the ruined face of Walter. She saw he had a long metal piece of the door in his hand. She backed up a few feet but tripped on the suit that was still halfway around her legs. Crawling against the back wall of the clean sweep room she looked back at Walter. He was right behind her.
"Please don't...I know what they did...I had nothing to do with it! Please...!"
The last thing Dr. Swane saw was Walters hollowed out eyes, before he slammed the metal rod through her face and the wall behind her.

I like how this story is building up slowly; how you're not rushing into anything. It's kind of predictable, but executed so well that it doesn't detract from the story.
The only thing I'm wondering at this point is, who is your protagonist?
