He covered his face with his hands; long, pale fingers that showed the blue veins snaking through his digits, throbbing with exhaustion and pain. It was the quiet that got to him.
Not silence, mind you, but the brief moment between the sounds. That fraction of a second where the world stood still. The sound, between sounds.
The break between hums of the overhead lighting powering up, then discharging.
The half second between footfalls in the hallway outside as a man made heavy steps in no particular hurry to get anywhere.
That pause between one heartbeat and the next. The rest between breaths.
It was the delay between monotone rings of the phone in the other room, the hesitation and the anticipation of the next one as your brain expects the noise to pierce the air again.
It was during awkward gap from the water dripping out of the faucet.
That flash immediately after a sneeze nearby.
The instant before his eyes could open again after his eyelids dropped in an awkwardly long blink.
The twinkle between commercials on the overhead television.
It was the hesitation before his watch "plinked" again on his wrist.
The click after the machine turns over for the next cycle, the break after the monitor stops pulsing in its rhythmic whine.
That pause, before the scream bubbles and rises out of his throat ripping the quiet apart; before the doctor could only drop his head in knowing and experienced sympathy; before the songs, and well-wishers could say their words of comfort; before rain could fall on a cloudy Wednesday, soaking the ground and trickling under his feet as he stood in muted torture.
It was during that lull, that lapse in noise, the quiet time, the "in-between time" time that she died.
It was those times that he thought of her, and loved her most of all.
