Elemental 15.5: http://www.ubersite.com/m/60959

Sorry about that one, hope this makes up for it

--------------

"Get out!" the battered Watcher yelled as he burst through the door, "We have to get out now!"

Phinaes looked up from the body of Jason slowly; eyeing the impeding, haggard watcher with a detached curiosity as smoke wafted through the open entryway. He was slumped painfully against the doorway, clutching the half of his arm that was still attached, blood flowing from several wounds on his head.

"You get out," Phinaes hissed menacingly, returning to his work. He stretched his hand over the limp form of the young Elemental he had been working on; his hand emitting an eerie red glow. Jason's corpse eagerly absorbed the water-like flow of energy cascading from Phinaes' decayed hands. The Golem Master waved his hand and Jason's body lurched upward, inhaling violently before falling back to the cold slab.

"Come on you," he ordered, repeating the gesture authoritatively.

Jason lurched forward again, his lungs hungrily accepting the cold air. His eyes half opened; burst capillaries framing his dark brown irises with a deep crimson. He gurgled as blood issued forth from his throat in waves.

"There you are," Phinaes grinned.

The injured watcher stood in the doorway in awe, momentarily forgetting about the attacker that had single handedly crippled their defenses. Phinaes looked at the intruder again, annoyance in his eyes as Jason's reanimated form continued vomiting blood.

"Now what the hell are you babbling about?" He spat as he gently stroked the fractured head of his latest creation. The watcher quickly returned to the moment.

"There's an Elemental, here; inside," He blurted out, "The others had left already and she's destroyed most of the guard. We have to..."

"You do not tell me what I have to do," Phinaes interrupted, "I will take care of myself. You are supposed to be stopping her!"

The watcher began to defend his presence in the chamber, but was silenced with a wave of the Golem Masters hand. He reached up and recovered an old, opaque jar from the bookshelf.

"Worthless bastards," He mumbled to himself as he opened the jar, "None of them worth a damn...interrupt me while...now I have no time to..."

He grabbed Jason's jaw and forced his head to the table as he removed a small, translucent magenta stone from the container. He placed it gently on the boy's forehead, mumbling an inaudible incantation. The stone ignited; electric current sparking outward and into Jason's body. He seized violently as the stone bored its way into his head; suddenly falling still as the skin enveloped the stone, a subtle glow still emanating through the healed membrane.

"Follow me," he ordered the new Golem. Jason sat upright and complied.

Phinaes shuffled over to the wall and placed his palm flat on the surface. Another mumbled incantation caused the wall to shudder; the jagged stone melting aside to reveal a dank passageway.

"Follow this to the surface," he ordered as he stepped aside, "The stone will guide you to your new master. Tell him what has happened."

Jason grunted, spitting blood as he pitifully attempted to answer.

"Don't bother," Phinaes said, "It will be a bit before you will be able to talk."

He fumbled in his pockets and handed Jason a small crumpled scrap of paper.

"Give this to Aaron; he will need it if you are ever to reach your potential."

Jason took the paper in hand and looked at Phinaes inquisitively. The decrepit Golem master smiled gently, noticing the scales already forming on the Golem's face.

"It will be alright my son," he said, patting Jason with his decaying hand, "It's time for you to go."

Phinaes watched patiently as the golem stumbled down the corridor. He hung his head and closed the entryway as the watcher mumbled something aloud.

"What are you still..." he trailed off as he saw the watcher hovering several inches above the ground, a blade of electric current protruding from his chest. The Watcher looked pleadingly toward the old man, before the blade jerked upward suddenly, cauterizing him as his body was split in half. Sarah casually stepped over the Watchers body and into the Golem Masters view.

"You will not be successful," He spat, "One Elemental is no match for us."

Sarah walked toward the Golem Master decisively, electric orbs enveloping her clenched fists. Phinaes stepped back instinctively, glancing around for anything he could use as a weapon. He spotted a metallic probe on the table and lunged for it, spinning menacingly toward Sarah. He looked around, confused; Sarah was nowhere to be seen.

"You're too slow, old man," She whispered in his ear. A solid strike to his spine threw him forcefully across the room, his face exploding in a shower of blue-black blood as he hit the opposing wall. Sarah walked slowly over to Phineas, his body twitching from the shock, as he tried to crawl toward the door.

"It appears you were mistaken," she said as she knelt down, "I am more than a match for you,"

"No chance," He laughed painfully, spitting blood on the floor, "There are more than just I. You will never..."

His threat was ended swiftly as Sarah's electric blade severed his decayed head.

"I'll manage," She answered as she stood.

She briefly surveyed the room, her attention caught on the opaque jar standing open on the table. She cautiously approached the container, smiling as she examined the contents.

"The hunt continues," She said to herself as she collected the jar and headed for the exit.

---------------------

The six Elementals stole silently into the darkened suburban neighborhood, each alert for any sign of attack. Seamus looked at one of the other Elementals and nodded toward an SUV parked in a darkened driveway. He returned the gesture and took to the sky. Jessica cast a reproaching look at Seamus, but said nothing as the unknown Elemental touched down next to the vehicle. Jessica watched in silence as he placed his hand on the electronic door lock. Small sparks radiated from his hand into the vehicle. The vehicle signaled the alarm disengaging; the door locks soon followed suit. He entered the vehicle and with another well placed arc of currant, started it. He waved for the others to join him and each ran across the street and climbed in. Seamus was the last to join them, climbing in next to Jessica.

"Let's go," He ordered.

The street remained quiet as the stolen vehicle quickly withdrew from the neighborhood and headed toward the city. They drove in relative silence as they entered city limits. Jessica tried to focus on the questions she was going to ask her father, but her head was still reeling from the sheer volume of information she had absorbed in the past three days. She instead gazed lazily out of the window, once again lost in the brief images as they flashed by.

"Seamus," The driver asked, "Where are we going?"

"54th street, Brenden," He replied, preoccupied, "That's where we are supposed to meet the others, if there are any left."

"You don't think they were attacked as well, do you"

The others looked at Seamus, each expression reflecting the concern of the others.

"I don't know, but we have to assume that we weren't the only ones."

Silence enveloped the vehicle again as it progressed down the boulevard.

"Well," Brendan began, "What if they..."

His interrogation was broken off by the sound of metal crushing metal. Suddenly the entire world was spinning.

Sky; building; ground; sky; building; ground.

As suddenly as it began, the rotation ceased, raining down a shower of broken glass upon the occupants of the vehicle. The world was muffled with the exception of a loud ringing coursing through Jessica's head. She clenched her eyes shut, and then opened them again in an attempt to regain focus. As she opened her eyes, the sounds of the world came screaming into her ears.

"Are you alright? Somebody say something." She could hear the concern in Seamus' muffled voice.

"I'm here," She cried out weakly, and after a quick assessment she continued, "I'm alright,"

She heard the others report their various positions and degrees of injury one by one. All except for Brendan. She pulled herself up and looked over the front seat. She thought for a moment that he was asleep; if not for the steering column protruding from his chest. She winced and looked away from Brenden's body, trying to assess how everyone else was. She was greeted with the same expression she assumed she was wearing. She fumbled around for the door handle and upon locating it, pulled the door open and fell into the street. She heard the other doors opening behind her as she searched for the cause of the wreck. The dark blue sedan was twisted around a light post on the corner of the intersection. She and Seamus simultaneously stepped toward the other car as the door opened; Jess threw her arm out to stop Seamus' progression as a wave of nausea swarmed over her. Seamus looked at Jess curiously and then followed her worried gaze back to the other vehicle. He immediately mimicked her expression as Aaron and his malicious chauffer stumbled out of the damaged car.

"Shit," Erin muttered as she came up behind Jess and Seamus.

Aaron casually wiped the blood from his head and smiled toward the group of Elementals.

"Well, well, well," He sneered, "And here I was thinking it was going to be difficult to find you."

"Shit, indeed," Seamus said aloud; their adversaries charging up for the assault.

"Look out!" Jessica exclaimed, pushing Seamus aside. She ignited herself instantly, catching the flaming disk that Aaron's ally had thrown at them. She held it for a moment, examining it through the shroud of blue flame emanating from her eyes.

"Not bad," she said, looking at the stunned face of her opponent before casting the disk into the ground, "Unfortunately for you, it wasn't that good either,"

Jessica felt the individual Energies of her allies kindling behind her; she looked into Aaron's eyes and smiled.

"It's not as easy when we're paying attention, assassin," She threatened.

"I don't have time to play with you now child," Aaron said, the sound of sirens growing closer, "But soon,"

Aaron raised his arms above his head and issued a guttural moan.

"Behind me, now!" She ordered.

She encapsulated the Elementals in a shield of fire and electricity as Aaron exploded.

"Damn it," Jess exclaimed as she dropped her shield, "I really wish he would stop doing that,"

She examined the area where Aaron was standing, although she knew it would be futile; her nausea had subsided, Aaron was gone. She angrily stared at the spot where her adversary had been standing as Seamus tugged on her arm.

"We have to go," He urged as the others ducked into an alley, "Jess... we have to go."

"You can't run forever, assassin" She muttered menacingly.

"Yes he can," Sarah interrupted, "He just can't hide anymore."

"Sarah?" Seamus asked incredulously.

"I was wondering when you were going to come out of hiding," Jess interrupted, still looking at the smoldering debris.

Sarah cast a confused look toward Jessica before addressing Seamus.

'I've got something...useful," She stated nervously, looking around at the growing crowd of people, "But we can't stay on the street."

"Jess," Seamus pleaded.

"Alright Seamus, I'm coming."

The remaining Elementals joined their companions in the alley as the first police cars arrived on the scene.

I can dig it. But I find that works a lot better when you build up some sort of attachment between these doomed characters and the reader. Which would you, as an author, prefer to hear:
"Oh no, Brendan got killed! I can't believe it!" OR
"Who's this Brendan guy? Oh, it doesn't matter, he's dead now."

-----

I think that for the most part, people getting killed in creative ways is entertaining as well.

I know what you mean as far as people gaining a sense of...I don't know...empathy? with the characters involved. It's much more poignant when they get killed. It's hard to root for the good guy if you don't know why he's good except by association with the people he's with.

Believe me, it's going to happen.

You guys are gonna shit bricks when ___________ gets killed off.

Haha...bullshit foreshadowing woo!!

Sorry I've been drinking.

I'm going to build up the others as soon as they get to a semi-safe place and stop getting in car accidents with bad driving Watchers.

seriously, drivers ed...

Ok, I'm going to apologize, once again, for being drunk...

g'night

I know, but it's always good for the people you kill to have a name.
Except for that homeless guy...
I just got tired of writing "the others" like they weren't important enough to have a name.
He should've been wearing his seatbelt anyway.
I just get into 'kill somebody off' mode and he seemed as good as any. I think thats why I have so many characters floating around. It satisfies my bloodlust and increases the body count when the time comes.

You should totally name "the others", maybe even spend a little time fleshing out their appearance and personalities (not too much time though, or it will take forever) so that when you decide to rub them out, it hits the reader hard.

I did the same thing in my Survivor series. I think I killed about twenty five people. I still think this is one of the best series going on Uber right now. Great writing. keep it up!

Cool, BUT, hardly the showdown I was hoping for. And are you implying that Aaron 'accidentally' ran his car into Seamus's SUV? That's a little too coincidental for me to go along with.

-----
Actually it was Brendan who hit Aaron's car. Thats what he gets for talking instead of paying attention while driving. There's a little PSA for all you bad drivers.
It just struck me as a funny idea...one group looking for the other, the other hiding, and then they get in a car accident; uncomfortable conflict ensues...

They're nowhere near the showdown yet. As brdn said, there's still Erik and the Jason/Golem guy running around, as well as a few people I haven't introduced yet.

-----

Also, the inclusion of this Brendan guy was unnecessary. No point in bringing him in if you're just going to off him in some random accident. There's no weight to his death and no reason for him being there.

I thought this was as well written as the prior chapters but I can understand ^his^ points. I think/hope though that this is just the precursor to much mayhem. after all, there's still the new elemental/golem running round, Aaron's still moving and the big boss man is still lurkin in the background. good stuff, keep em coming!
