The liger has both stripes and spots. The stripes are inherited from its tiger parent and the spots from the lion parent. Ligers are usually orangish/golden in color. However, there have been white tigers bred with lions to produce a very light golden coat on the offspring. If the hybrid offspring is a male, it will have a leonine mane, but it will not be as large and defined as a normal lion's mane. The liger gets most of its strength and size from both of its parents; this makes the liger possibly the largest cat in the world! On their hind legs, ligers stand approximately 12 feet tall. At most, ligers may weigh up to 1,000 pounds. Ligers make the sound of both a lion and a tiger, although their roar tends to sound more like a lion's roar.

Both lions and tigers have the same number of chromosomes: 38. The barrier to reproduction is non-homology between the chromosome pairs between the two animals (difficulty in getting the pairs to hybridize during mitosis).
Even if they did have different numbers of chromosomes it wouldn't necessarily mean that they couldn't reproduce. Horses have 64 chromosomes. Donkeys have 62. The gametes combine to form a zygote with 63, which is why MOST (not all) mules are sterile.
The problem is that the offspring are usually sterile, although not always the case (I believe the liger is sometimes fertile, while the tigon is usually sterile, although I may be mixed up on this).

Cookie, I read somewhere that if the male was lion and the mommy was a tiger, then it was a liger, and if mom was a lion and dad was a tiger, then it was called a tigon. I dunno if you know, but I just remembered it.
I also just remembered not to babble incoherently about arb thingies.
And man alive, that liger's a fatty boom-boom.

I thought Ligers were so big because;
both the Male Tiger, and the female Lion (could be the other way round) have growth inhibitor genes. Natures way of stopping them becoming huge, and inefficient in the wild. So when a Female Tiger and Male Lion (again could be the other way round) there is no growth inhibitor gene, so it grows f'ing huge.
+2 cause Ligers are huge. and one of my favourite cats.
