MVA = Most Valuable Author - The Definitive Mathmatical Value of Ubersite's Authors (3680 hits)

Category: General

Rating: 0.84 on 203 reviews (Rate this item) (V)

Submitted by Rawrg (View user info) at 2005-03-05 22:45:32 EST

Everyone on Ubersite is familiar with the MVA. The MVA will always exist, and so it should rightfully exist! Most of the people on the MVA have worked long and hard to get there, posting tirelessly. Some are hitwhores or they had a stroke of genius and made it to Bored At Work, others simply have a cult-like following because of their charisma and knowledge of what Ubersite truly is: The Mob, and still others are just that good and post often enough that they made it to the MVA on sheer talent.

Today though, I strike a blow for the underground Uber Elite and have constructed a new MVA: The Most Valuable Author list. This list factors in heavily the Average Rating of a user, his ratio of reviews to hits and reviews to posts and combines them proportionally to come up with a numerical value that is equivalent to their Uber worth.

SKIP OVER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW THE MATH OF THINGS

The formula is as follows:

(((Average Rating + 3) ^ 10) / 100000000) * ((Times Reviewed / Total Hits) * 100) * ((Times Reviewed / Total Posts) / 10)

The reasons for the divisions by multiples of tens are to make the number under 1000. The reason for adding 3 to the average rating is so that there aren't any negative integers in the formula. This would be relevant if the exponent of the Average Rating were odd because it would give it a negative value.

MATH OVER

I factored the times reviewed vs hits and posts to give favor to those more often reviewed rather than viewed. This eliminates a lot of traffic from Bored At Work and hitwhore titles that get picked up on google. Overall rating has a big impact and the best rated of the MVA are still on top, such as comicbookguy, Loren1, BLITZKREIG_BOB, Sideburns, etc...

I factored in 55 users, the MVA and approximately the top 30 rated users who have posted more than 10 times and have been active in the last month. Using this information, the following list was composed. I did not include UberMadness or LordOfThePost as they were Uber-Specific posters.

If you'll notice, overall rating factors very heavily and the people who post more often but with less quality material fall to the bottom, however their post/review counts are still factored in. Otherwise, Bickerstaff would be at the very top with a rating of 1.93

I created this formula because there are a lot of unsung authors out there that don't get the credit that they deserve. I'm not complaining or saying that this should be a menu on Ubersite. I'm just putting their names out there, the top 40 of this list are the true cream of the crop and Ubersite's most popular and well liked authors. I hope that this gives them the motivation to keep posting, because without them, all Ubersite would be is SPT, porn and shitty one-liners.

This list can be expanded, but it's a lot of trouble converting the data into excel. To anyone who wasn't listed, I apologize. As you can see, some of the MVA would be at the bottom of the list, for obvious reasons. This is about as close as I can get with math to guage something so subjective.

...

I know, I know, -2 DIE!

This response is for Bart...

There is a flaw in the stat-keeping for the site. Whenever you try to post with a picture file that is incorrectly labeled, i.e. with an apostrophe etc., even if the post was unsuccessful, the attempt registers as a post anyway in your user statistics.

If you count my posts, I actually have 109 posts, not 114.

Inaccurate stat-keeping is not the only reason this formula is flawed. There is just no way to account for all the factors that have gone into making our individual stats what they are.

---------------------------------------------------

Well yes, but this is something most everyone encounters so it's a wash

---------------------------------------------------

Yea, everyone encounters this, but my rating went down like, .5 because I had about 10 posts trying to post the same picture.

I guess that's my fault though...I spelled "governor" wrong each of those 10 times too...

----------------------------

NO NO NO....... I should have been more specific. This happened to me during UBERMADNESS. I'm not talking about actual repeat posts that show up in your user info.

In other words, if you count my posts in my user info, you'll come up with less that it says I have... So, those are posts that are being counted, but I cannot even register hits OR ratings from. This is the equivalent of having about 5 posts with zero rating and no hits on your permanent record you can do nothing about.

I doubt it will ever be fixed, but I'm not that concerned about it.

Yeah, "Best Ever" is an old name that I put in a long time ago. I've never changed it even though in time I have come to disagree with the term.

A more accurate name would be something like "Highest Rated Ever".

_______________________________________________

Speaking of changes, would it be a major ordeal to create an "oldest" tab under user info to go along with the "older" and "newer" tabs that currently exist? That way you could easily jump to the user's oldest message without have to scroll through page by page. Not a big deal for people who don't have many messages, but for those who have been here a while it can be a bit of a headache.

Thx

Well sir bart, you state that posts like Tom's are valuable to the site because of the traffic they create, then counter that with comments such as...

In my opinion, it's extremely important that the lists on the left side are not really presented with any sense of "Best" or anything subjective like that. They literally are nothing more than "Most".

___________________

The whole MVA thing is a bit of a catch 22. The fact that these users are posted on the front page perpetuates this whole scenario, and pretty much ensures that the MVA will always be MVA unless they just suddenly stop posting. The growth of this site pretty much ensures that. Six months ago my stats would have put me on the MVA, but due to growth the MVA's hits have more than doubled. I long ago came to the conclusion that it's pretty much impossible to make the MVA without either a) making B@W at least once if not multiple times, or b) writing stuff that is either blatant hitwhoring a la "naked olson twins" or writing stuff deliberately to get a rise out of people.

To try to label something as "Best" is to impose some sort of governing statistic on a creative process. While there are comments and ratings, the structure of the site is generally rooted in facts and not on subjectivity. Things don't get filtered out because someone doesn't like them. The site does not care about your sex, religion, or political preference.

--------

I Disagree.

A large portion of the shit on this site could be removed simply by not having an MVA. There's a wealth of people who, for some reason, think that getting on the MVA will enrich their lives in some way. These people are posting useless shit almost daily in order to obtain their goals - Look at IHAKF, he contributed next to nothing to this site other than pissing everybody off and if he hadn't been banned, he'd currently be sitting in the upper end of the MVA right now. That's Bullshit.

I've no objection the occasional shit post, but when somebody posts nothing other than a shitload of links to what appeared to be a kiddy porn site (as happened recently), it's not contributing anything. Sure there are gaps in the system suggested and probably a few ways around it, but I doubt very much that I could top it by posting nothing other than porn and blank posts titled "my six yr old sister gets her first facial".

I don't think that rawrg is saying that this system should replace the MVA, just that the MVA is flawed and that this is another way of looking at it.

In my opinion, it's extremely important that the lists on the left side are not really presented with any sense of "Best" or anything subjective like that. They literally are nothing more than "Most". "Most Recently Reviewed" is a factual statement that basically says "These are the last ten things reviewed". You can't argue with that and it doesn't involve any kind of moral or opinionated conclusion.

"Most Viewed Authors" is also just a fact. I have never stated or implied that it has anything to do with being good. There are plenty of people on this site that I think are better writers than I am. The list isn't about being good, it's about being viewed, hence the name "Most Viewed".

If the site was designed to care about what was in each post, the material on the site would end up being skewed towards that designed target. For example, if I took Ubersite exactly as it is, didn't change a line of code, but modified the logo to say "Ubersite - The Future Of Cars" with a little picture of a car on it, lo and behold people would suddenly start talking about cars. It's magic.

Since there is no topic presented to anyone, people talk about what is most natural - themselves.

Blah blah blah, can't we all just get along?

The thing I like about Ubersite (that no set of numbers could ever measure) is the near Anarchy.

I like the fact that, on any given day, I can read a post that actually makes me think, and that's sandwiched between a pair of tits and a fart joke.

I like the fact that some posts make me laugh and some piss me off and some turn me right the fuck on.

I appreciate your efforts, and I think there is some merit to your formula, but the term "Most Valuable Author" isn't accurate.

This site would suck if it was full of a bunch of motherfuckers writing pretentious pulp like I do.

It rocks because of the myriad of talents here.

Granted I have done my share of bitching when the shit post tide is in, but with the exception of the obvious one liner posts, sometimes a good shit post hits the spot.

The funny thing about this all is...

You're right.
Bart's right.
Shitfuck's right.

Pretty much every opinion I have read on here is right, yet they're all at odds.

For what it's worth, I think your stats have as much merrit as any Bart has already implimented. I just can't bring myself to care about them any more than I do hits.

Screw you! I like to get my data the hard way.

Actually, I will take access to the server if you don't mind. That way next time I can just get the files without bothering you. :-)

By the way Bart, your argument sounds like those people arguing about how "important" Hitler was to history. Yeah, he made a big impact, but we're looking for the best damn it. And I will not rest until some formula spits out a number that says I'm better than all of you losers.

The problem with trying to do an analysis like this is the same sort of problem that you run into when trying to compare, say, Willie Mays and Ken Griffey, or Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds.

The older users of Ubersite, like the older baseball players, simply came from a different area.

Today you can write a post about how you took a shit with a piece of corn in it and drum up 1,000 hits.

Here's a post I wrote a few years ago that garnered under 200 hits and only had 17 reviews, 5 of which came from me: http://www.ubersite.com/m/4211

How about this one? http://www.ubersite.com/m/4208 It got 99 hits and has ONE reply, from bart. There is no way humanly possible to get one review on a post today.

How do you quantify the enormous contributions of users like Loren, Loki, Hidden, Nicole3, Sky, and others who fostered a sense of community and helped turn Ubersite from a place where people occasionally came to rant into a community?

How do you account for the ratings inflation that started about two years ago? Should you do some sort of inversely proportional function to account for how long people have been on the site?

How do you account for the enormous contributions of the people who spent hours making UberMadness I and II a reality?

The simple fact is that Ubersite has gone through at least five or six very distinct phases and the best people from each era tend to be similarly placed in terms of hits, ratings, etc.

Before you even try to answer that, what is your base criteria for what makes a good Uber-user?

If someone writes a phenomenal political rant that engenders discussion, how is that even comparable to a short story that brings a tear to your eye? Simply trying to calculate rating against hits and responses does absolutely nothing to help anyone.

---

er, ahem, cough cough

(though admittedly i have done more than one post)

actually, i had been thinking of doing a post on this topic myself. my criteria was simply the question 'who would be missed most if they left'

it's already been shown that the show will go on regardless of who leaves, but i still think it's an interesting question.

my answer, by a very clear margin, is Loki. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what she adds to this site, but taking her away would be like taking away someone's backbone.

See, the flaw with your calculations are that they don't put enough emphasis on hits. One's value to the whole of Ubersite is not just how good you are as an individual, but how well you play with others. Part of that lies in your ability to attract new users either through links to posts on other websites, emailing to friends, or matching highly in Google.

No kidding.

For example, Tom is great and all, but the fact that his one post attracted a whole bunch of new users to the site is actually valuable to the site because it means there are more people here. Now, depending on the kind of people that were drawn, you may decide for yourself whether that was good or bad, but the point is that there are more.

Yes, in some sense high ratings are good, but it's also very valuable to the site to have debate. A post in which someone attempts to make a highly educated or aggressively opinionated assertion on some controversial topic like politics or religion or abortion will also have value, although it may not necessarily result in that post having a high rating.

On top of that, there are plenty of users like firefly and mystiamoon who provide their own value without posting any messages of their own.

Plus, what if someone like Jesus Christ came in and posted one really good message revealing the true word of God himself, and yet he got filtered of your algorithm because he didn't meet the minimum posting criteria? Don't mess with JC.

The replacing of the double spaces with singe ones is so that every other line isn't empty in the Excel spreadsheet. You could skip that step and sort once in Excel, but I didn't think of that until just now.

Step 1: http://www.ubersite.com/cgi-bin/users.cgi?sort=age&days=ALL
Step 2: Copy/Paste into Notepad.
Step 3: Convert from DOS to Unix ASCII format so that the LFs show up as a charater.
Step 4: Replace all ")LF Registered: " with commas and all double LFs with LFs.
Step 5: Save the file, convert back to DOS ASCII and open with a program called Notepad2.
Step 6: Replace all the common stuff between each number with commas, save as a .csv.
Step 7: Open in Excel, remove the date column, apply some formatting and filters and put the right formula in the last column.

Note: Step 4 is really freakin' slow. Replace all takes forever in Notepad. Notepad2 does it a lot faster, but you can't replace LFs even if you convert to Unix, so that's why you have to use the regular notepad for it.

You knew someone would get bored enough to do it. Here's the MVA score using your system for every person with at least 1 post. I took out all the ones with 0 posts because the file was too big, and the formula is simple...0 posts = division by 0 = no score.

Anyway, after looking this thing over I realized a few things. First off, Loki posts too damn much. Second, you need to set a cut off number of posts and cut off number of reviews. And even then I think it's still off.

Here's the link for anyone that wants to see it:

The moral of the story is that you should just be happy with who you are and stop trying to find some calculation in an attempt to quantify creative elements into an infinitely precise scale of value.

The whole issue with this is that if there were a listing structured the way you suggest, people would always find posts by the person who was #1 on the list and give them low ratings just to alter that person's position in the listing.

There are some interesting anomalies due to this formula and perhaps it should be weighted differently, but some of the MVA survived because I factored these two factors:

Reviews / posts
Hits / reviews

Take Sideburns for an example. His hits from being on B@W and one of the most popular authors on Ubersite actually lower his rating a bit, and I think this is accurate because there is a slight bandwagon effect that skews more well known authors. BUT when you factor in that he has over 8000 reviews to 192 posts, this is indicative that his posts are of such quality to cause a high percentage of people to read most of the way through and actually take the time to review them. That gives him a massive boost that overcomes his rating, and his hits from B@W which isn't part of Ubersite. His rating is almost .2 lower than the other posters in his range of the list, but he still maintains a high standing.

Here's an idea, find someone you like to read, and read them. I couldn't give less of a shit that Bickerstaff or Circe or Shandy or Apollo or anyone for that matter isn't on the MVA. If they entertain me, I'm going to read them.

Unfortunately, your formula does not take into consideration how difficult...nearly impossible it is to be able to retain a high average rating with 200 or more posts.

===

Heheh. Do you mention this because you've got over 200 posts? Nigger please, your rating was still shit when you only had 30.

I mention it because it is a fact. I mention it because there are people who have been posting for years who never will get any recognition in posts similar to this because they fall below the radar despite the fact that they consistently post great stuff.

It hat nothing to with me. If it had anything to do with me, if I had intended for it to be about me I would have used a number like 500, a number that better represents my contributions you dizzy bitch.

Again I will tell you as you seem to have sieve like memory retention. My existence on that list, my overall rating, or my name recognition-negative or positive mean NOTHING.

I have been able to find and enjoy an invaluable use for this silly website. A use that I cannot explain to those like you who are hung up on the left hand frames.

Get over it, and you will find out what I am talking about.

+2 for the work involved.

Why does my math not work with this?

Have I forgotten my exponent rules? Does x to the 10th power not equal x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x?

If so, I have Badlands for:

4.87 * 4.87 * 4.87 * 4.87 * 4.87 * 4.87 * 4.87 * 4.87 * 4.87 * 4.87 = 7503944.48
7503944.48 / 100000000 = .075039

reviewed / hits = 546/13840 = .0395 * 100 = 3.95

reviewed / posts = 546/14 = 39 / 10 = 3.9

.075039 * 3.95 * 3.9 = 1.155

Where did I go wrong?

"I factored the times reviewed vs hits and posts to give favor to those more often reviewed rather than viewed. This eliminates a lot of traffic from Bored At Work..."

-----------------

Your system tells me that people who get reviewed more = better quality. But you fail to take into account that some people post their tits, or make a poll, or make a general post looking to argue and they get bumped up because of the hundreds of reviews they receive.

I disagree with this idea, thus the 0 rating.

Yes. That's what the +3 is for in the formula. -2 +3 = 1, therefore the exponential growth of the rating will not be exponential decay or negative growth.

This is an ok concept, but it fails when implemented because of the following reason:

Uber used to be a lot harsher with it's ratings, and a nearly fiction free website. It was mostly work/politics with the occasional rant. It was more discussion than story telling. For a post to be rated over 1.0 was actually fairly rare.

Uber has transformed tons since than, and now any humor fiction writer can consistently get 1.5+ on anything they post. No offense to people like Sideburns, 1.21, badlands, etc. but to be honest they aren't half the writer's people like Razor and JMG are. People who were around in uber's original state, and have gone on through the transition.

Honestly, to think JMG or Razor are only 34 or 43 is simply ridiculous.

Back to the think tank with you.
