"Hello?" Her voice resounded off the stark hospital walls; an eerie breeze wafting around the thick plastic that surrounded her bed. It took her a few minutes to realize she was in the hospital. Her pulse throbbed achingly in her head as she sat up. She closed her eyes and pushed the button to summon the nurse; but there was no answer. The vascular rhythm in her head subsided and she opened her eyes to survey her surroundings.

The lights were off; the only source of identifiable illumination was through the open window on the far wall. The light was inconstant, bouncing as if to an unheard beat. A deep silence pervaded the large empty room; although wailing sirens invaded the quiet from far outside her enclosed plastic prison. She threw her legs over the side of the bed and tried to open the zipper that held together the thick plastic. Her efforts were futile; the bottom flaps of the plastic were held down in small metal railings that outlined the bed. She cried out again, and again becoming frantic at the lack of response. Tears formed in her eyes and she began clawing at the thick plastic walls which shredded like paper under her assault.

She stopped in shock and looked down at her petite hands; the blood visibly coursing through the arteries in her pale wrists. The deep red stood out starkly against the pale bluish hue of her skin.

"What the f..." She began.

Her thought process was interrupted by a sound at the end of the hall. She stepped cautiously through the opening she had made, hardly taking notice of the cool breeze blowing through her open hospital gown. Her senses were assaulted as she cleared the quarantine chamber. The echo of muffled voices from outside the window and through the floor from three floors down. The sterile smell of ammonia almost knocked her back. She could detect faint traces of several people that were no longer in the room. One had eaten Chinese food earlier that day; another, hadn't showered for a while. She could smell vomit from down the hallway; the hotdog that rested, molding, in the garbage can. And smoke; the burning of the city outside the safety of her hospital room permeated everything else.

She quickly darted across the room with a speed she was unaware she possessed, although her flight instinct had sent that fleeting thought to the back of her mind. She grabbed the handles of the wardrobe and ripped the doors from the hinges, splintering them against the walls. She briefly stopped in shock at the display of her newfound strength before grabbing her clothes. If whatever it was that was creeping down the hallway was unaware of her presence before; such was not the case now. She threw on her clothes, a green t-shirt and pair of old blue jeans. She froze as the shuffling sound from in the hallway stopped in front of her door.

The door creaked open painfully slow as she ducked to the side of the protruding wardrobe. The silence was broken only by the raspy, gurgling breathing of the creature as it entered the room, preceded by the smell of rotting meat. She struggled to keep her stomach from erupting from her throat as she heard the doorknob click shut. They were alone together now. She held her breath as she peeked around the edge of he cover; the creature shuffling towards the splintered remains of the wardrobe doors. It looked like a man; the head protruding from the white lab coat sporting thick dark hair. His slow, shuffling gate made him seem like something other than the doctor that his clothes implied. There was a dark substance on the collar of his coat, but she couldn't tell what it was. She didn't want to wait around to find out either.

She made her move as the man knelt down, sneaking toward the closed door, trying to be as silent as possible. She failed in her silent escape, her shoulder brushing against the metal hangers inside the wardrobe. The man spun around, and she gasped in shock. He looked at her curiously with one dark brown eye; the other removed along with half of his face. He grinned at her hungrily and lunged toward her as though the slow pace at which he entered the room was purposefully to throw her off his true ability. Terrified, she reached out and grabbed the first object she could find and hurled it toward the man as he advanced. The object was the wardrobe, drywall and wood splintering as she ripped the bolts that held it in place out of the wall. It impacted the man with a wet slap; and then another as his head exploded between the wardrobe and the far wall.

She slid slowly down the wall as she looked at what was left of the man pooling out from underneath the debris. She stood, wiped the tears from her eyes and cautiously entered the hallway. She skulked down the hallway, staying tight against the wall; listening for any signs of another living thing. She paused as she reached the end of the hallway. She held her breath as she cocked her head to the side, listening intently. She heard it again; a muffled sobbing lingered out from behind a closed door on the opposite side of the hall.

She opened the door carefully, and she wasn't met with the smell of rotten meat, she entered.

"You can come out," She said aloud, looking around the room suspiciously, "It's alright."

She slowly inspected the room, attempting to locate the source of the cries that drew her in here in the first place. She winced and clutched her stomach as she walked, then called out again.

"I won't hurt you,"

The sound of shuffling drew her attention to the wardrobe. She slowly walked toward the wardrobe, still holding her stomach.

"You can come out," She called out again as more shuffling issued from the closet.

She paused as the door cracked open, a small blue eye regarding her suspiciously.

"Hi," She greeted, kneeling down, "Are you hurt?"

The door opened a little wider and the small, rounded face of a young boy looked back at her.

"What's your name?" she asked, unmoving."

"I...it's...Jeffrey," Came the stuttered reply.

She winced again.

"My name is Karen," She said calmly, "Are you here by yourself?"

The boy, no older then ten, opened the door a little wider.

"I came here with my mom; I don't know where she is. She made me get into the closet. She hasn't come back yet,"

Karen motioned the boy to come to her as his eyes filled with tears.

"It's alright, Jeffrey," She said calmingly as he exited the wardrobe, "I'll help you find her,"

Jeffrey eagerly clutched onto Karen and began crying uncontrollably.

"It's ok, Jeffrey," She soothed as she stroked his light blonde hair, "It's going to be all right."

He stomach knotted up again painfully as he wept into her shoulder. She winced at the pain and nodded her head down. She could hear his heart beating quickly in a combination of youth and fear. Her stomach tightened again. She looked down at the boy, his blood pumping furiously through his veins. She licked her lips, and voraciously snapped down on Jeffrey's neck.

He screamed as she ripped through his flesh; his blood spraying across her face as she drank hungrily. He tried to kick his way off of her, but her razor sharp nails dug deeply into his back as she fed. She felt his pulse and will to fight weakening simultaneously as the blood flowed from him. She ripped his trachea out, eagerly clawing at his flesh to get more blood from this small boy as she drained him. She tossed the empty carcass to the floor and slumped back against the side of the bed, breathing heavily. She lazily looked over the body of the dead boy, and vomited all over him before she passed out.

I can see why some people have said that this is a bit muddled, but it's still a solid piece of writing.

Good work, man. I liked the description of her vampire-powers and such. The zombie-lunge was good too. I also liked the humanity of the character...I'm wondering now how what happens to a person's personality once they are infected...do they turn "evil"? Or apathetic? Hmmm.

My vampire is supposed to be your boy's mother. I don't think it came across very well, but I thought it would be interesting to link some characters.

It was interesting in my little world, anyhoo.

It was good but a bit confusing. Was that thing in the room his mother? Was she his mother? Why couldn't she control herself? She should have at least tried.

Oh well... +2 for zombies I guess.

====

No, the thing in the room was a doctor. No, she was just a patient. I'll give loss of control over to basic vampiric hunger/instinct. After she realized what she did, she got sick and she threw up...

It made sense in my head.

You guys aren't mind readers?

that wasn't even part of the story...

oh well...This was spat out in the midst of work as per usual.

it wasn't supposed to be clear. Timeline being right at the beginning, when all the shit started going down and no one knew what was going on. so if you're confused...point got across

fuck, gait...

I give up

It's a good thing that this was a good story, because I otherwise might leap at you in a fury for not proof-reading carefully.

Nah, I'm joking.
