Well, it's just about my three year anniversary on Ubersite (don't go by the date I signed up, back in the day you could post without doing so)

Anyway, for some reason, the first "official" post I wrote as Razor got drug back up into the light recently, and bart said: http://www.ubersite.com/m/3959#1192525

So, I figured why not? And after spending an hour or two working on it, I realized that the reason why not is that so many movies fit into multiple categories or blur the lines that you'd get more argument out of whether Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a crime movie or a comedy than you ever would out of a top 100 list.

Well, the end result of it all is that I wound up with a list of 150 fantastic films, which I now present to you here in no particular order. It's not a definitive list of all good movies ever, and probably not the 150 best ever, but if you were starting a movie collection going with these 150 first would cause anyone who visited you to nod appreciatively over your spectacular good taste.

Also, there's some bits below where I talk about good actors, bad actors, and finally I make an impassioned plea for someone with a good heart to take ahold of my lizard.

In completely unrelated news, my wife and I are the owners of a pair of Leopard Geckos that we would like to find a home for. While these Geckos cannot sell car insurance, they do make excellent pets, require minimal upkeep (I'm talking two dollars a week if you're treating them lavishly), and they live an average of thirty years (they are three years old). They can be handled, they pose no threat whatsoever to anything larger than a cricket, and they're just so darn cute.

The Geckos are a mating pair, so if you were so inclined you could raise lil' Geckos and sell them (usually for about 50 bucks apiece for Leopards).

We are looking to give them away because we have two kids now and that's enough for us without having to take care of pets. They come with all the neccessary Gecko stuff, although if you have an aquarium to put them in I'd prefer to hang onto mine, but if that's a dealbreaker I'll give you my aquarium.

The total package is worth over 200 bucks, but it's yours for the low price of free unless you want to give me money for them (which would be nice I guess). You pay for any shipping related costs although honestly I think it would be best for someone who lives within driving distance to take them as it's really unsafe and somewhat expensive to ship lizards in the winter.

Haha, the Salton Sea does indeed rock. Any movie with Val Kilmer and Vincent D'Noffrio (or how ever it's spelled ) munching on brains is bound to be a classic!

See Boondock Saints. I saw it yesterday, and it kicked ass.

As for who mentioned End of Evangelion, my advice to anybody who does not know the Neon Genesis basic story is don't see End of Evangelion as your introduction to it.

All I remember is giant, bleeding robots, followed by a ten minute series of seizure-inducing flashbacks and the death of the universe.

The Salton Sea
American Psycho
The Game

Also add to the list of kick-ass actors: Ray Liota, Val Kilmer, Vincent D'Onofrio, Michael Douglas

It would be a +2 but one of the points got lost in translation.

Haaaha. Wow that was clever.

But seriously, you demonstrated some good taste. Another movie to add to "Worst Ever" might be Phantom Menace.

+2 for mentioning Dark City, an entirely underrated sleeper from which the premise for The Matrix was absolutely based/stolen. -1 for not mentioning Heat with Deniro and Pacino.

Hey, Razor. Interesting post. Just to add my two cents, Don Cheadle is my favorite actor at this point. I don't know if you've seen Hotel Rwanda, but it should have beaten Million Dollar Baby at the Oscars. Actually, I thought it was interesting how the Oscars portrayed exactly what the movie was about: people in the "civilized" world caring more about hobbies and sports than they do about 920,000 people being massacred in a span of two months. It was a fantastically awesome movie and Don Cheadle gave a performance that could only be compared to the greatest in the history of film.

I admit I'm slightly biased because I've been a Cheadle fan for a while, but it's a very good movie that actually impacted me in a way Michael Moore could never do.

I like the list, and agree with most of what you put on...but Starship Troopers? Jesus, Heinlein is turning in his grave. Horrible translation from book to movie, hell, I don't think the people that made Starship Troopers ever even read the book.

Razor's right, it was Super Troopers...which coincidentally was an equally awful movie (if not more so) with the exception of the first ten or fifteen minutes.

I like the list, and agree with most of what you put on...but Starship Troopers? Jesus, Heinlein is turning in his grave. Horrible translation from book to movie, hell, I don't think the people that made Starship Troopers ever even read the book.

I like this list.

But more than the list, I like the admission that it's what YOU like, not The Definitve Movie List of the Ages. Good show.

I haven't read the reviews to see if anything's been said about it, but I work for a pest control company that has a bug/lizard/snake/critter zoo of sorts and they might be interested. Could you IM me at Josie3019 and let me know if someone's laid claim to el lizardos or if I should ask my boss about buying them?

Please remove:

28 Days Later , Dogma , Spiderman , Spiderman 2

I could not wait to finish 28 days later, it was very shit (I have a degree in Biology, the inaccuracies drove me nuts) and I hated all the characters and the plot. It's just so shit!
----

.... You apparently did not understand it then. The inaccuracies are intentional because the movie is more of a societal study then a sci-fi flick. I thought it was quite obvious that Danny Boyle let the audience know that from the get-go.

Someone said Office Space and someone else said Harold and Maude. I agree with both those being on this list. Also WHERE THE HELL IS ADAPTATION??????????? That is seriously Charlie Kauffman at his finest, and quite possibly the greatest screenplay ever written.

Another thing: This list should've been alphabetical (quite easy to do on any Word Processing system) and I commend you for putting both Danny Boyle movies on the list (trainspotting and 28 days later) and graciously omitting The Beach. Somehow that movie didn't do the book justice. Otherwise, good list, I disagree with a few choices but that is the beauty of opinion.

I agree with most of these. But you should have layer cake included.

In case you don't what it is, it's by Matthew Vaughn, the producer of Lock Stock and Snatch. He decided to direct this one, and it's brilliant.

Seb's recommendation of the week.

Incidentally, I watched the Untouchables yesterday. I can't stop laughing at that film.

Most of your movies I'll agree with.

But Leonardo DiCaprio has gotten better, I used to hate him, but he was really good in Gangs of New York and The Aviator.

Although you don't have Christopher Walken, Steve Buscemi, and Willem Dafoe on your best actors list, I think they all deserve some credit.

Someone mentioned Billy Wilder in this thread...I couldn't say enough about how much Wilder has done for cinema and he is responsible for writing some of my all time favorite films. I don't hear his name mentioned much unless I'm hanging out with writer/directors that are obviously Wilder fans so they can "borrow" from his craft.

There's just no comparison between Sunset Blvd and Spiderman II.

One of these movies has been revered for over 56 years and the other one stars Dunst who is, as evil people go, a vapid, talentless, piece of shit.

I'm actually a little bit of a DVD collection addict. I own about three hundred movies, and I often buy films based on the recommendation of friends. I currently have about twenty-five films in my collection that I haven't watched yet, and when I get the Kubrick collection there will be another three or four more.

I'll get to it eventually, I promise.

You forgot the greatest film of all time.

Buster Keaton's "The General". Made in 1927 by the greatest comic/director/stuntman who ever lived. Black and white. Silent.

Set in the American civil war, Keaton plays a Southern engineer whose train is stolen by Northern spies. This film pioneered so many filming techniques it's mindblowing. Culminated in the largest ever (at the time) battle scene to be filmed, across a river which had just had a full-size train collapse into it from a burning bridge.

Oh, one final note. I'm glad to see that John Turturro get some recognition. Secret Window was one of the stupidest fucking movies I've ever seen, (and too bad, because in general Johnny Depp has done an excellent job of selecting his roles - he and Bradd Pitt as well) but Turturro was incredible in that role.

Oh, and I don't know if you've seen Ray, but Jamie Fox really was all that. It was every bit as freaky as watching Jim Carey in Man on the Moon. You just completely forgot you were watching an actor. Incredible.

Not bad, I own a good deal of these. I'd have to say I like Ewan McGregor, but it's debatable as to how much of that is attributed to his acting and how much is attributed to the fact that he's chosen some excellent roles. Trainspotting and Shallow Grave both rock, and he was a passable Obe Wan. (A little annoying, but I think that's what was called in the script. Lucas has his work cut out for him to make up for the travesty that was parts I and II.

the spiderman movies are all right. I think too much of spidey's wit was cleaved from his character. the only one liner i can remember was the first one when spidey told the neo-nazi from "oz" to "shut up and let the adults handle things" (paraphrased)

as for xena...the blond was hot and the lesbian undertones were more like overtones. i had a lesbian neighbor in my dorm who used to watch xena on oxygen. nothing is funnier than hearing a woman tell you how fuckable another woman is.

Actually, I'm a huge fan of the Spiderman movies as well, which are vintage Raimi.

I also loved the campiness of Hercules and Xena.

Good list, but 2001: A Space Odyssey is a glaring omission.

Also,
The Seventh Seal (you neglect Bergman)
City of God
Ikiru (cannot recommend Kurosawa highly enough)
la Dolce Vita (Fellini)
Mulholland Drive (Lynch - insane in a highly entertaining way)
all Sergio Leone's masterworks
"Beat" Takeshi Kitano - star and director
Billy Wilder
the Coen brothers - Fargo and "The Man who wasn't there" in particular.
The Deer Hunter
John Huston's films
Oliver Stone

There are so many more, but I have to stop somewhere. Films are my passion.

You have good taste in movies, actors, etc. However, there are three problems with this list.

1. Tom Hanks is talented enough that his ability should not be questioned here.

2. Jamie Foxx ceased to be a rising star after "Any Given Sunday" and became a full blown Movie Star.

3.Tom Cruise has only played 2 characters in his entire career. You probably saw his recent role with Jamie Foxx and thought, "Wow, this guy has gotten a lot better." Granted, that performance was very good, but up untill that point he has performed as a one-trick-pony.

Still, I agree with most of your list.

Keanu is pretty terrible.

I should clarify that my "favorite actors" list, whlie it does include people who I consider to be phenomenal actors such as Oldman, also includes actors who always seem to wind up in good films, which is why Will Smith is on there.

I could have made the list a lot longer if I had thought it through... guys like Willem Dafoe belong on there.

As far as directors go, here's some off the top of my head that would make me watch their films automatically:

Sam Raimi
Stanley Kubrick
Martin Scorcese
Steven Spielberg
Kevin Smith
Quentin Tarantino (the jury's still out for some reason)
Ridley Scott

Like I said, that's only off the top of my head

The Godfather
A Clockwork Orange
Reservoir Dogs
Pulp Fiction
Trainspotting
Monty Python and the Quest For The Holy Grail
Full Metal Jacket
Apocalypse Now
Clerks
Mallrats

Most of everything else you listed is either stuff I think is just decent, or I've never seen.

Except for these movies, which are shitty in almost every way:
The Shawshank Redemption
It's a Wonderful Life
The Green Mile
Bicentennial Man
Spaceballs
Back To The Future
Jaws
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Bicentennial Man: A brilliant film

Kurosawa: Been meaning to see his movies... I know how much of an influence he is, but haven't seen his films

Adaptation: I bought it but haven't watched it yet

Dr. Strangelove: I am buying the Stanley Kubrick collection next month, it has like 8 Kubrick films in it.

come on; contact sucked! foster and mcconaughey had as much chemistry as two love dolls with cocks on their asses.

million dollar baby was about 45 minutes too long

the green mile! that movie had one of the stupidest lines ever: "let me help ya boss." Add that to another poor rendition of the "magical black man." in these movies, instead of being their own super hero, black men help dumb honkies. see: bruce almighty, the matrix, bagger vance, family man...all with black men helping the poor white hero.

"indiana jones and the raiders of the lost ark?" the first one was called: "raiders of the lost ark" same goes for "first blood." if you need to help movie neophytes by adding to the title, then they are too stupid to apreciate it anyway.

league of their own...shittiest ending ever. why the fuck should the good catcher lose out to her whiney, no good sister. especially when that sister cries more than a little bitch with a skinned knee.

as for worst movies...most you listed were fair game. EXCEPT "Ladybugs." The kid in that movie (johnathan Brandis) killed himself a couple years ago. that gives his movies cult status.

pretty good picks over all but let me nit pick a bit.

Bicentenial man is not a good movie. robin williams + sappy = shit
I really cant see how you could put that on the same level as the classics you mentioned.

Also you really should she Dr. Strangelove. Today. Now. And Adaptation. And Wes Anderson's stuff.

Also Dicaprio aint that bad. hes just too pretty.

Finally Bill Murray has had a more impressive carrer than Tom Cruise.

Thats my two cents.

+2 for an over all good list of movies.
+2 for Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman. If either of them are in a movie, I pay to see it in theatres.

-3 for no Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, or Rashomon.

Akira Kurosawa was the man. Bar-none, one of the greatest directors ever.

Otherwise, good job.

28 Days Later , Dogma , Spiderman , Spiderman 2

I agree with:

Caddyshack II
Queen of the Damned being terrible

I own Caddyshack II on video.

I laughed my way through Queen of the Damned.

I could not wait to finish 28 days later, it was very shit (I have a degree in Biology, the inaccuracies drove me nuts) and I hated all the characters and the plot. It's just so shit!

Fair play for recognizing:

Big Fish , Princess Mononoke , The American President , Ferris Bueller's Day Off , CB4

I'm not gonna bother to rip this because it's your opinion but...anyone that has "Rick Moranis" on a "Favorite Actors" list, but finds the time to critique Tom hanks somehow, has a screw loose somewhere.

Although Moranis, as Louis Tully in "Ghostbusters" uttered some of the most memorable movie lines ever...

"The superintendent's gonna be pissed..."

and Tully: "Who are you?"
Ackroyd: "We're the Ghostbusters".

Tully: "Who does your taxes?"
