This post kicked ass, but I'm a bass player. The lead guitarist in my band has that guitar though. He can shred like no muthfuckin' other.

Jimmy Hendrix usually played a right-handed Fender that he switched the strings around on, not his Gibson. I'm pretty sure he played a right-handed Gibson as well, and probably because it offered him the same range (on the higher frets) as it did a righty, since the body flares out at the same fret on each side of the fretboard.

jordan,
you know nothing about the SG
The real SG that was worth playing was the version Townshend had in the late 60's with p90 pickups.
you can see the P90's in the pics you posted. You can still get them sold as an SG Classic from Musician's friend. only difference between that and the one PT used is the new ones don't have the lame wraparound bridge.

Olivia, I didn't mean the guitar was fake, I meant perhaps the picture was fake. I've seen plenty of double neck guitars and am completely aware of their existence and knowledgable of their structure. In fact, the guitarist for Cheap Trick has a 5 neck guitar, that's not the point.

I said maybe it was fake because Elvis does not seem like the type to be playing a double neck guitar, or an SG, for that matter. Also, the SG didn't come out until 1962 and that picture of Elvis looks fairly early; it looks more like him from the '50s. And because I'm not sure if the SG existed (and even less sure that the double-neck SG existed) at that time, I feel the picture might be fake.

And I just realized I wasted a good amount of my time explaining a meaningless point. Oh well...

the gutiar elvis is holding isnt a fake. double neck guitars aren't common but they exist. one neck has a normal set of 6 strings, the other has 12 strings (6 strings each doubled up) for bluegrassy stuff i guess.

I have a SG standard (yes Gibson) I agree with you on the most, but my Gib LP standard just sings better over all :P

Some others worth mentioning...

Slash (God of all that rocks) sometimes uses an SG (sometimes, like when I see Vevet Revolver play in Jan this year) he also uses the doubleneck, although he just seems to rock it harder when playing the old GnR songs.

Justin and Dan Hawkin (The Darkness) used a SG doubleneck on the Christmas song as well as a SG standard on many B sides, they all kick ass.

Yeah, I forgot where I was going with this.

Good post, I like to see passion in people about music and guitars.

Rock on.

Johnson, I'm really not that close-minded. I have a Stratocaster and an Ibanez RG too and like them both, I just don't LOVE them like I love my SG. Plus, I can understand and respect anyone who says they like a Strat or Les Paul or whatever better, I was just expressing my opinion. The post might've seemed a little close-minded because 9 times out of 10 insulting things is easier and funnier than complimenting them and I don't think saying "The SG rules, but Strats, Les Pauls, and Epiphones rock too." would've given the post the same effect.

G-Prime, I happen to play Mandolin as well. It's fun as hell, but definitely a challenge. Also, you nailed it on the nose about the appearance thing. I was just fucking around in those pictures, so what if I look like a tool? Fuck the fuckers.

+2 for a good post. Even if the SG isn't my favorite guitar. I'd take a mandolin over a guitar any day though...

Oh and you do kind of look like a tool in those pictures...

But good for you for not caring. I often get told to cut my hair. People tell me that if I look like a hippie people aren't going to want to be around me. It's not like I'm dirty or smelly... Besides, if someone is so superficial that they are going to judge me based on my appearance, then I probably wouldn't want them as a friend anyway.

Meant to give this a zero, not a +2.

Eddie Hazel also used a Les Paul, plugged into a Fender or Marshall amp.

Townshend is the only great guitarist I know of to really prefer the SG, and he's not in the same league as Hendrix, Taylor, or Hazel.

Les Paul's and Fender Stratocasters sound better. I've never heard a better sounding guitar than Mick Taylor's Les Paul or Hendrix's Strat. I know almost nothing about playing a guitar, but I do know what kind of sound I like, and nobody's sound is better than Taylor's or Hendrix's.

It's best to have a little of everything lying around for different situations in which you desire a different tone. A good assortment might include a Fender Strat, a Fender Tele, a Gibson Les Paul, and a USA Jackson.

THe Les Paul and the SG have a very similar sound. They both feature mahogany bodies with set necks and the SG comes stocked with the exact same pickups they put on the Paul. The difference is, a Les Paul will give you a better lasting investment than an SG in that they will accrue value faster over time. This is just one reason the Paul is superior. The others are all somewhat intangible.

The SG is not as well balanced as the Paul. You might notice that if you put your strap on the SG and stand up, the neck will fall toward the floor if you let go of it. This is because the body is not sufficiently beefy to counter the heavy neck. On the other hand, a les paul, while remaining balanced, will require back surgery or a visit to the chiropractor because it's heavy as a oak tree.

For my money, give me a good vintage Les Paul Custom in Silverburst... beautiful.

DOn't get me wrong, your guitar is badass. I'd take it too...

Kramer Strat. Stratacaster and Telecaster are styles, nerd. A strat has all 6 tuning knobs on the same side and a tele is 3 on each side, therefore, you just dissed yourself for having a telecaster. Way to go, fucko. Are you gonna make fun of my dual humbuckers now?
__________________

All I have to say is "What the gay?" Telecasters are single-cutaway and they have a different headstock and commonly the classic "C" shaped neck. They still have the six-in-line tuners.

Fuck you, my strats will kick the everloving shit out of your cheezy gimmicked SG. I hate the SG's tone, I hate its feel, I hate its neck (both the thickness and the radius) and I also hate how it is a 'middle-of-the-road' guitar. It can't decide if it wants to be a rythm guitar or a lead guitar, so they tried to mix both of them together and came out with a horrible monster of a guitar.

90% of the artists you listed dont even endorse the SG and it was pretty much common knowlege that they don't use them as their main axe, regardless.

You can have your favorites, but I can have mine. An SG isnt something that I enjoy, nor will I ever. and fuck AC/DC because I hate them.

Lone_stranger, Satriani plays his own JS1200 Ibanez, if I could find any pics/evidence of him ever playing an SG, I would've put it up.

Getyourvoltronon, I know Hendrix played the Stratocaster a lot more than an SG, what's your point?

Donkey, I was referring specifically to the Fender Telecaster, which ironically has all 6 tuning knobs on one side.
