Today I saw the trailer for the Revenge of the Sith and it looked pretty bad ass. I am not a Star Wars nut job or anything like that, but having grown up in the 80's it would be a lie to say I didn't watch the movies and love them as a kid. Empire Strikes Back was IMO the best, the original was great too.
Anyway, I now have a 12 year old son. He has never seen any of the Star Wars movies, (I know...what kind of dad am I) as such he has the opportunity to see them in order of the story line starting with The Phantom Menace, then the Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, then A New Hope (the original), Empire Strikes Back, and lastly Return of the Jedi.
Besides the obvious down side of the decreasing graphics, and anything that may seem dated on the earlier made movies, should I introduce him to the movies in order of the story line, or in the order of their release?
On one hand the story will make a lot more sense by watching Episode 1,2,3 etc, but the experience of a prequel, and the history in watching them in the order that they were released seems more right to me. I don't know. What do you guys think?

I have thought the exact same thing. I still have no idea.
I'm leaning towards order of release, however it would be interesting to see the reaction on the kid's face when he goes from the lightsaber duel in episode 1 to the one in episode IV.

Watch them in order of release. The first 3 Star Wars movies, in my opinion, weren't as flashy and good looking as the Episode series. The jedi lightsaber duels evolved in Episode 1, as well.

Pen_name, what you wrote made me think a little about the reason society is fucked up today.
Children have too much choice. Not enough discipline or structure.
If this kid gets to choose how he watches this series all willy-nilly, somewhere a fairy will die.
Clap, Clap your hands!

all right, all right. i was just trying to think in the perspective of a kid. it would be weird to have all your friends see ep. 3 and have your pop say, "nope, you can't until you've seen them in a certain order."
that said, i have to agree with the others on some level. the darth vader/anakin secret was pretty major. the problem is that your son probably heard about the backstory from some show, movie, person...making the whole thing moot.

i don't see how it matters. besides, it seems like a better idea to let the kid chose what he wants to watch, because anything else would be really type A, anal behavior.

Haha, you must not be a parent are you? That sounds like some shit straight out of a text book. Seriously it's not that big of a deal that the behavior need to be analyed. I was just curious peoples opinion who had seen them all and if they could do it over again would they rather see them in order of release or the order of the story line. Thanks though

Order of release. Your kid has to get the shock of finding out about D.V. being Luke's father.

Guess it depends if you think the relationship between Vader and Skywalker was supposed to be a suprise, or if the viewer was supposed to know all along. I personally think it's supposed to be a suprise, which is why that relationship was never explained during episode 4 or 5.
