Alright. not really a post about anything i have to say. but i am just interested who knows much about this whole china vs taiwan thing. To sum it up, china is planning to retake taiwan, taiwan is planning to fight them off. America may or may not defend them...

China won't let Taiwan go, and even though Taiwan claims its soveriegnty, most people on the mainland and in Taiwan agree with the "One China" principle. If Taiwan gave in, they most likely wouldn't face any economic, social or major governmental changes, and would be treated much the same as Hong Kong has been treated by the central Chinese government since the handover, as well as gain representation in the central government.
Taiwan's problem is the political association. Central Chinese government leaders have been relatively patient with this issue, and even in the sixties Mao had decided that it was a problem the future generations would have to solve. Western media is blowing the new policy out of proportion, as the ideas and actions are really not anything new. I suspect that as the Chinese government continues to lax its economic control and open up more, talks will become more and more effective between the two sides and Taiwan will probably give in.
Someone below mentioned the "Tibet occupation." http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-03/16/content_425225.htm This article mentions that the Dalai Lama recently admitted that Tibet is a part of China, but I haven't been able to find the original interview where he said that.

I think taiwan has very little hopes in defending itself. but gotta give them credit for standing up for themselves

I don't think they are standing up for themselves. The US has a large naval presence there, and China has the crappiest navy of any super power(can't remember how good taiwans is). I think they are banking on China not doing anything since the US is there, even though we don't officially recognize them. There game plan used to be not declare independence until china gets less crazy, but who knows now.

I hate Chinese, and Taiwan rules. Seriously, nuke China. Or enslave them in our kitchens.
China deserves torture before death, though. They have a horrific history, and I'm not talking about the dynasties. China is worse than the Nazis. They annexed Tibet without a good reason, other than to forcefully bring them under control of "the motherland". That is the main reason China is pissed off about Taiwan, simply because they're about to lose a little bit of territory. No matter if these people want independence, China's a greedy machine.
I could go on and on about how evil China is, but a quick nuclear detonation would make it so that I wouldn't have to discuss China at all.

Taiwan needs to pull it's head out of it's arse and do something if it wants to become independent. At the moment they're saying they're soveriegn to the world but telling China they are their province. They need a strong leader to get anywhere, but president/governor Chen is a joke.

Those two have been saber rattling for decades. The US unknown reaction to an invasion (though Bush did say he would defent Tawain soon after getting in office) is what has kept China from trying so far.
Maybe this is just some more bickering and another pissing contest.
