(Part 1: http://www.ubersite.com/m/61963)

Lying motionless on the floor, he plunged into a state of abysmal
consciousness, treading dangerously close to the point of no return.
The bright light approached slowly, its intensity steadily increasing.
His mind's eye stared curiously at its soothing glow, transfixed by
its otherworldly presence.

His eyes were slammed shut, but tears still flowed out of the corner
of his eyes, tracing paths over his temples. He'd been near the brink
before, but the light seemed so real as it encroached gracefully upon
him -- a blue-hued, pulsating beacon in a world of absolute blackness.

He didn't know how or why he ended up in the old apartment. Much like
a wild animal wandering off alone to face death and accept fate, Alex
knew this was where he belonged. His psyche drifted aimlessly in
limbo as he tried to recollect the events leading up to the present.
He caught glimpses of his childhood and his tragic adolescence. He
remembered the day his life was turned upside down. He pictured a
round, metallic object dangling hypnotically on a pitch-black
background. Absently, he clenched his fist around the modest locket,
as if trying to hold on to something in the world of the living as the
shearing force seemed about to rip him in two.

Visions of the filthy linoleum with smears and droplets of blood
rushed through his mind. The putrid wound on his arm was in awful
condition, but the pain had been replaced by a gentle throbbing
sensation. He felt himself sinking deeper as the light continued its
relentless approach, bathing him in a warm, effervescent aura. He
embraced it, longed for it, and beckoned it closer.

--

The Brooklyn street was bustling with activity. The chatter of local
merchants, passing cars, and sirens filled 52nd Avenue as the young
boy made his way back to the basement apartment. He had walked this
route with his mother many times and was familiar with the landmarks,
and even the names of some of the intersecting streets. He approached
the worn and rusted iron stairwell. As he descended, his little legs
bent fully to negotiate the steep steps.

Bending slightly to his left, Alex let his back-pack slide down his
right arm and caught it by the strap. He bent down, opened the side
pocket, and retrieved a brown key. Before he could insert the key, he
noticed that the door was slightly ajar, and the wood around the latch
hole was mangled and splintered. He carefully peered into the
apartment without opening the door any further.

He quietly opened the door, entered his apartment and closed it behind
him, making sure the latch didn't lock closed. Flipping on the
closest light switch, he saw that the cushions on their couch had been
ripped to shreds, the foam filling scattered all over. To his left, a
small wooden cabinet had been smashed to pieces. Newspapers, TV
Guides, and all kinds of papers covered the floor next to the couch.
Dumbfounded and near tears, Alex ran into his mother's room. The
bedroom had been ransacked even worse than the living room. The
closet's contents were strewn about, and what little jewelry Rosa had
was gone. Like the couch, the mattress on the bed was sliced open at
the edges and it looked as if someone had violently explored the
innards, looking for something.

This is getting good.

It's a shame installment series don't attract the same interest here on Uber as other types of writing.

Bart: You know, Grampa kinda smells like that trunk in the garage
where the bottom's all wet.

Lisa: Nuh-uh, he smells more like a photo lab.

Homer: Stop it, both of you! Grampa smells like a regular old man,
which is more like a hallway in a hospital.
