I have a class in college called "Rock and Soul on the radio." Basically all we do is sit and watch music videos from various artists in the different genres. So anyway, the other day we were watching Reggae music and videos. The teacher (she's about 70 and is a DJ at one of the Chicago radio stations; WXRT) was talking about how some Reggae music is sung to pass down histories, or to tell important stories or things like that.
Then she said something similar to, "Just like in the slave days, the slaves would sing songs about the Messiah coming down to save them. And their owners often would think that they were singing about Christianity or the Bible when in actuality they were singing about being saved from the slave farms."
Well anyways, there's this black girl in the class (very much a self-righteous/you don't know what I'm all about kind of person) who mumbled in an angry yet rather indistinguishable manner, "slave days!"
The teacher (innocently) asked what the girl said but the girl didn't respond. So my teacher went on talking about Reggae music and we watched a video clip and then after it finished the teacher started telling us more about a different artist when that girl suddenly mumbled in a louder, angrier, and even more indistinguishable tone, "slave years!!"
"What did you say?" my teacher asked again.
"Nothing..." the girl replied.
"Turets Syndrome sort of thing?" My teacher asked in a very kidding way before returning to what she was saying.
I, and a few other students laughed at this, the girl just kind of sneered at the teacher.
About twenty minutes later we had our break and as I got up to go to the bathroom I saw the girl approach the teacher, of course I had to wait and see what she said.
Girl: "Before, what kind of disease did you say I had?"
Teacher: "What?"
Girl: "When I made a comment earlier you said I had some kind of disease."
Teacher: "Oh, it was nothing, just a little joke about what seemed like a random comment you blurted out."
Girl: "The comment I blurted out (she added extra attitude to that) was about how it wasn't just a few 'slave days' but it was slave years. You don't have any right making comments about my race being slaves, you don't know what it's like when your race has been persecuted in the past!"
Teacher: "I'm Jewish."

Not every race has hardships. I am white, and we are effectively ruling the world. In the past we have built the world's most expansive empires many, many times.
I am Swedish. The worst thing to ever happen to Sweden that I can think of was the professional football club in Minneapolis, Minnesota choosing my ancestors' race as their pseudonym.
Maybe Erik the Red sunk a few ships. I dont know. It doesnt matter. Not every race has faced hardships.

Funny thing is, the girl doesn't really know what it was like for her ancestors either. And besides, every generation, race, and culture has hardships. I'm with whoever said they hate when people play the race card. I'm Irish, but you don't see me going around saying, "My people were in a famine!!!" I know that's not really comparable, but you know what I'm saying.

No I'm pretty sure she doesn't, from what I've seen in class she just sits in the back of the class with a look on her face that's kind of like "My ancestors were treated badly, and it's every white person I ever meet's fault." I really don't like people like that either.
