NECROSIAC 39
"Time exists differently here"
Taela sat in rapt attention and watched the images on the old fashioned television flicker past in grainy black and white. The scene on the other side of the fuzzy screen had seemed uninteresting at first, a simple room in a plain building, a cabin perhaps. She had almost turned it off immediately after bumping into it, but something about the stark reality of the world on the other side of the screen told her she wasn't watching an old program from Lilly's memories. She was watching the world from Lillith's eyes.
At first, as the understanding of what she was seeing soaked in, she suspected the reception in that particular part of the Necrosiacs mind must be bad. She'd fidgeted with the long silver antennas in an attempt to bring some semblance of clarity to the screen as it switched between light and dark. Finally, after a few moments of frustration, the truth had dawned on her and she knew that the change of contrast was due to the changing of the day on the other side of the screen. It was night turning into day then vice versa, and the flitting shadows were people moving in and out of her vision.
She wondered how much time she'd robbed from Lillith by keeping her trapped in the house. She wondered if perhaps years had gone by and the threat was over, but as grainy as the screen was, she could tell the room on the other side wasn't a prison. There was something reverent about the way the figures moved in and out of room, as if they were afraid, nurturing even.
"We have to keep moving"
Taela turned to the pale, scared face of the little girl at her side and tried to smile warmly.
"Honey, do you know what this is?"
"It's a TV silly"
"I mean, do you understand what its showing?"
Lilly brushed a stray lock of hair from her face then glanced at the screen uninterestedly
"Uh huh. It's the show that comes through her eyes. I don't like it"
Taela smiled again then tussled the girl's hair before turning back to the screen. She watched as a shadow flittered into the room then stopped directly in front of the screen. For a split second she could make out the face of a black haired man. His features were pale and sharp and then he was gone as fast as he'd come in. He disappeared from the stage almost too quickly for her to burn his image into her mind, almost too quickly for her to notice the veins in the white of his eyes and the utter lack of iris.
"She's with Necromancers"
She leaned towards the plain over-sized knob on the top left of the television, to turn up the volume, but stopped as Lilly tugged on her sleeve impatiently.
"We should go before they find us!" she whispered urgently.
"I think they're still in the basement" she whispered back, but nevertheless pulled her hand from the volume control. Their pursuers might be in the basement but there was no point in taking chances and she doubted turning up the volume would help to make any more sense out of the flickering scene before her.
"Lilly do you remember when we snuck out of the basement"
"Uh huh, that was scaaaary"
"Do you remember what the dead people did when we crawled past them?"
"They got out of the way. They always get out of the way when I sneak... they're still scary though"
Taela hit the switch to turn off the TV then knelt before Lilly and gently held her shoulders as another realization dawned on her.
"Do you remember when we drank tea in your room Honey?"
Lilly smiled wide.
"Uh Huh, that was fun, but then they came and we had to run through the closet"
"How did the tea get in the pot?"
"It's not in the pot silly. It just comes out when I pour it"
Taela nodded as the child before her confirmed her growing suspicions. She hadn't thought much about it at first. She hadn't put any value on the strange things that happened in the prison of the Necrosiacs mind. She had noticed the plastic pot was empty prior to Lilly pouring the warm pink liquid from it into her white plastic cup. She'd sipped the tea and been surprised to find it tasted more like incredibly sweet ice tea. It hadn't tasted much like real tea at all, and as she looked into the wide eyes of the child she knew that it had tasted exactly as it had been meant to taste. It wasn't supposed to taste like tea as she remembered it. It was supposed to taste like a child would imagine tea would taste.
That the child had her own power in the house was undeniable. Taela had understood it from the moment she'd experienced the strange teleportation from trunk to basement. She'd realized from the start that the little girl belonged in the house as much as Lillith but suddenly she knew the truth of her new reality. Suddenly she realized, without a shadow of a doubt, that the part of the Necrosiacs mind that she found herself in, belonged to Lilly. It had been constructed by the part of her that had once been Lilly. It was a safe haven made of the little girl's memories.
Lillith didn't belong in it.
It was the reason the Necrosiac couldn't leave, or follow them through the secret escape routes that Lilly always seemed to find without error.
"Lilly, do you know why I think I can follow you through the secret places and Lillith cannot?"
Lilly impatiently peered around Taela's shoulder then shook her head negatively, causing another lock to tumble down her forehead and hang in front of her eyes.
"Nuh uh, how come?"
"Because you don't want her to. I think you have more power than you realize Sweetie"
Lilly blushed like she always did when Taela called her that and shook her head again.
"I'm just a little girl and she's a grown up"
"A very mean grown up"
"Yeah!"
"Do you know how long you have been here Lilly?"
"A long long time"
Taela kissed her on the forehead as her mind raced to find the words to convince the child of what she wanted her to do.
"Would you like to go somewhere else with me? Somewhere nice where there's no mean people chasing us?"
Lilly's eyes grew wide and she nodded her head hard enough to make Taela wonder if it might fall off.
"Yes Please!"
The words almost came out as a shout and Taela brought one finger up to her lips to signal for her to be quiet.
"I can take you to a place I know about that has flowers, and music, and more dolls than you could ever count but you have to do something for me first"
Lilly's smile faded to a half frown as a look of suspicion crossed her eyes.
"Grown ups always do that" she pouted.
"Do what?"
"They always promise nice stuff to get you to do stupid stuff"
Taela chuckled despite herself and gave Lilly a wink. Deep inside she hoped her little savior had gained enough trust in her to believe the lies she was about to tell.
"We do don't we?"
"Uh huh"
"But when the stupid stuff is over we always give you the nice stuff don't we?"
"Nope. Mommy did but Daddy and Lillith don't"
"Am I like Daddy and Lillith"
Lilly pursed her tiny lips and looked thoughtfully at the ground a moment before answering.
"No. I guess not"
"Who am I like most Sweetie?"
Lilly's frown blossomed into a smile once again and, for the first time since she'd found herself in the Circus Tent, Taela Smith stood on the edge of hope.
"Like Mommy" Lilly beamed.
Taela leaned forward and hugged the little girl despite herself, as part of her teetered on the verge of triumph and the rest floated on a sea of guilt.
After a moment she released her grip and sat back on her heels again.
"I would never ever lie to you. You believe that right?"
Lilly wiped a tear from one eye with the back of her hand then smiled and nodded shyly
"Do you think we could go visit my Mommy when we leave?"
"Of course"
"Ok. What's the stupid stuff I have to do?"
"You have to give me the key and then go out the front door"
Lilly's face turned furiously petulant and she shook her head hard enough to turn her face into a fury of curly red locks.
"I don't like it out there! I will be Lillith then. I will be all growed up and if I find my Mommy she won't even recognize me!"
Taela urgently brought her finger to her lips again then pulled the panicked child into her arms.
"Shhhhh. Of course she will Honey" she desperately cooed "Mommy's always know who their little girls are, no matter what they look like. I know you're scared of the other side of the door, but you only have to be there a very little while and then I'll come and take you to the special place"
"How long?"
"If you close your eyes and count to ten, I will be there when you open them. Can you count to 10?"
"Uh huh"
"That's not a very long time is it?"
"Can I count fast?"
"Uh huh" replied Taela in the same fashion as Lilly.
"Suuuper fast?"
"As fast as you want" she assured her.
"Why don't you come with me right away?"
"I have to make sure that Lillith can't follow. Don't worry, I promise I'll be suuuper fast"
Lilly shuffled her feet in indecision then kissed Taela wetly on the cheek, stood back and said
"Okie Dokie Smoky"
A few moments later Taela stood at the front door of the house and verified with her eyes that the vast musky expanse of the living room was empty. Confident that no hidden shadow lurked in the alcove leading to the basement at the far end of the room, she turned to the hall adjacent to the door and gave Lilly the all clear, then waited as the little girl came to her slowly on tip toes.
Once again she knelt down in front of her and gave her a hug, then pushed her gently away, kissed her forehead and held out her hand for the key.
Lilly removed the chain holding it from around her neck with shaking hands and then placed it delicately in Taela's open palm.
"Ten seconds" she whispered.
Taela nodded and leaned forward to speak softly in Lilly's ear.
"Can you do one more little thing for me Honey?"
"What?"
"Can you imagine that I'm stronger than Lillith and the Clown Thing?"
Lilly nodded her head vigorously
"Oh yes. I already think that Ms Taela. I think you're just about the bravest person I've ever met in my whole life"
Taela swallowed the growing lump in her throat then stood up, unlocked the door and held it open, bathing the room in the cold white glow from the other side.
"10 seconds Honey" she promised
Lilly looked up at her with the kind of expression of complete innocent trust that only a child can manage, then walked into the glare as if it didn't exist.
Guilt and shame held the door open, beckoning Taela to follow the innocent being she'd just sent through, but in the end her resolve prevailed and she shut the door and locked it for what she hoped would be the last time.
"I'm so sorry Lilly"
Taela placed the key around her neck with shaking hands and turned her mind to justifying her actions, when suddenly, a familiar voice sounded from the direction of the alcove.
"OH YOU DID NOT!"
Taela looked up at the red haired witch and the throbbing white worm clown across from her, and felt the guilt of what she'd done fade away.
"Hello Lillith"
Lillith took a crooked necked step forward, her thin arms clenched in balls of rage at her side.
"I'm going to rip you apart and feed you to my new friend" she spat "I'm going to hurt you in places you never knew existed and then I'm going to take the key and leave!"
Taela smiled and took her own step forward, arms held loosely at her side.
"Alright Bitch" she spat back "Draw"

There are a solid four pages of +2 streaks with 30 or more reviews. That is stupid. I am weeding it all out by giving every one of them a +1; that way posts that have 1.99 with 200+ reviews gets best ever.

The door exists in the little girls mind. Is it even a door on the other side?

I generally don't click on fiction posts, however this seemed to be pretty popular, so I read this one and shit, I might just have to read the whole series.
