I loved her too much.
By the time she had called me for the last time, we hadn't seen eachother for almost a year. Never in a relationship, we just loved eachother as two people should. She would end up telling about her unsupporting family and her emotionally abusive father and I would end up comforting her as she cried over the phone.
It wasn't always this way though. There was a time when those things weren't the issues that mattered. It was a time when we each had plans, everything was going fine, and her conversations made me smile for a week.
By our last conversation, her voice was making me depressed.
You see, a lot changes when a girl gets pregnant. Friendships change. Emotions change. Needs change.
I was the first person she told. I had to hear her say "I'm so scared" and it haunts me to this day. On one side I had my beliefs that one's situation was the result of their own doing. But I also loved her. All I could tell her was that she had to deal with it and that I loved her still. Essentially, useless advice.
By Christmas break I was at my wits end. I went against everyone's else judgement and drove up to Chicago around the same time as the snow storm. We stayed in a motel together...no, nothing like that, and during our time together I saw a haunting image.
Next time you see someone die on the inside, look into their eyes. Where you once saw a fire, you'll see tears. And if you aren't shaken by it, you're more of a man than me.

what happens when you see someone die on the inside, look into their eyes, and realize its a mirror?

-1 for reminding me what empathy meant.
Sorry.

It's the hollowness that gets me, the lack of soul where there used to be one. I have seen people become dead inside after too many drinks or because of some type of emotional trauma.
Whatever the case, it's haunting.

I was a little drunk when I wrote that review...Really, though, I liked the piece. Especially:
"Next time you see someone die on the inside, look into their eyes. Where you once saw a fire, you'll see tears. And if you aren't shaken by it, you're more of a man than me."
..Fucking beautiful.
