Ever been uncomfortable in your own house? I'm sure everyone has, at one point or another. Usually it's the work of an overactive imagination, but sometimes, just sometimes, it's something else.
I was home alone on Saturday night, and I thought nothing of it. I like being home alone, it gives me space to watch what I want, and listen to my music, and sing as loud as I want without being scared someone will hear me. I know that on occasion, my imagination can run away with me. Plenty of times before, I have managed to get myself into a near state of panic for no good reason. I was determined not to let that happen tonight, since my mum was not coming home at all, so I'd be alone for the entire night. I hear noises around the house all the time, but normally they're just normal house noises. I've learned to ignore most of them. So when I walked into the kitchen and the side sliding glass door was open a little bit, I didn't think much of it. I assumed, for whatever reason, that my cats had somehow discovered how to open glass doors. I had heard a strange buzzing or humming noise... But I thought it must have been pipes or something.
I closed the door, locked it, and went back to whatever I was doing. Watching TV I think. Star Wars, ep 6. I got up a bit later, to get something from the kitchen I think, and I saw that the door was open again. Odd, I thought, as I was sure that I had locked it. I just assumed that the lock had not gone on all the way, and one of the cats had opened it again. Don't ask me why I kept thinking the cats had done it. I locked the door again and sat down at my computer. Or made dinner. I can't remember exactly. I thought nothing (or at least not much) of it until I had to go to bed. I started looking for my bag, because I need my mobile phone (cell) next to when I sleep. It wasn't where I thought I put it, so I started getting a bit uneasy. I went towards the front of the house, thinking maybe I had left it there. No luck. So then I went to look in my room, in case for some unknown reason I had put it in there. Before I even got to my room, something grabbed my attention.
The blinds that were drawn across the back door were moving. Just ever so slightly, but they were moving. I walked over there to find the back door was wide open. Wide. Fucking. Open.
This, needless to say, freaked me out. The way the other sliding door kept opening, which had been in my head since it happened, now made a little more sense. The buzzing/humming noise I heard before clicked in my head, as the side door is quite noisy when you try to close it. I couldn't find my bag, one door was wide open, and the other had opened at least twice. At this point, I panicked a little, and went to my computer. I was online at the time, and had been talking to people, and so I told them what was going on. I was busy trying to convince myself that my bag was somewhere else that I hadn't looked yet, and my brother had left the back door open, and my cats were now super strong and super smart.
Enter: one of said cats. Her name is Silver. She's grey. My brother was inventive when he named her. She was scratching on the fly screen/security screen to be let inside the house. I had the light turned on, but I was a little scared to look outside up until that point, fearing that there may in-fact have been someone out there. As I was letting Silver in, I glanced to the left. Behold, my bag. Open and lying on the ground, with its contents scattered around it.
This was when I realized there was a little more than cats and brothers at work here. This was also when I realized how alone I was, and suddenly, how scared. I went back to my computer, and filled people in on what was happening. I needed to call the police, I knew this, but we're on dial-up. And although I was fairly sure that the people had taken what they wanted and left, I was still a little scared that someone might still be in the house. And my brother's and my computer are networked, the internet connection being on his computer, in his room. Where I was now scared to go. Uber's very own creepfirebombing was talking to me at the time, and told me to go next door and wake neighbours so I could call the police. I said I didn't want to, because it was about midnight by this stage and I didn't want to wake anyone up. Also I was scared to go outside. He responded with something like...
ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED? SOMEONE HAS BEEN IN YOUR HOUSE AND COULD STILL BE THERE!
I still couldn't bring myself to go outside, not even to pick up my bag and see what was missing. (Although I was pretty sure my wallet and phone would be gone, possibly my passport as well. Who knows, maybe even my deodorant, depending on who it was that had taken it.)
One of my other friends, Michael, lives a little bit away from me. It was at this point that I asked him to come over, as I was rather scared. I've never met him before, we met online, but we have a mutual friend, so I was sure he was ok. I then spent a little time crying and freaking out more, then managed to calm down before he got to my house. I was incredibly glad when he got here, and almost started crying again. He even bought a baseball bat in case anyone was still hanging around. He took me outside and we picked up my things (minus my wallet and phone, as I suspected) then went inside and made sure all the rooms were alright and didn't have nasty people lurking in them.
I called the police, and then they called me back and got an incident report. Told me a forensics person would be around tomorrow to see if they could get any fingerprints from the doors. Michael and I then sat on the couch for a while and talked, then decided to watch Ice Age. He stayed until about 6:30 the next morning. We had spent the whole night on the couch just hugging and talking and watching TV. (Sweetest guy in the world, I swear.)
Eventually he had to leave (he had snuck out of his house because he didn't want his mum to worry about him driving, as he'd been drinking a little bit.) so I walked him out and sent him on his way. I went back inside and watched TV, not really knowing what to do. I had a call from the Forensics lady, and she came around and did her thing before my mum was even home.
My mum took it fairly well, although she said I should have called her. She's been so careful with locking all the doors now, and I think she's a little scared to leave me alone again. One of my brothers still had a phone call from a girl saying she found my wallet, which I now have back. She got his number because the people left my SIM card (from my cell, it has my number and all my phonebook entries on it) with my wallet. Good news, because now I don't have to change my number. My other brother still doesn't know, as he'd be likely to try to catch the first train home, even though there's nothing he could do now.
My dad found the serial number of my phone (he's the one who bought it for me, so he still has the packaging) so if the people try to sell it, I might get it back. I also got the IMEI number from him, which can apparently be used to trace and/or block my phone from being used at all.
I'm still a little shaken up from it; I didn't sleep until about an hour after my mum got home on Sunday morning. So I'm still a little tired. It scares me that there were people in my house and I didn't even know. The fact that the door opened twice means they were probably hiding somewhere inside. I was sitting maybe 10 feet from the door. 10 fucking feet. And I didn't see anything. That scares me, and makes me feel uneasy.
To whoever did this, FUCK YOU. I hope you get genital herpes and a urinary tract infection. Oh, and we're getting a dog.
To Michael, thank you so so so much for coming over like you did. I know I've already said it, but I appreciate it a lot.
Thanks to the police for being so helpful. My friend Tanya who offered me her old phone to use until I can get another one.
And to my daddy for going over to the apartment/room where I stayed in Indonesia to find the packaging of my phone to get the serial and IMEI numbers.
To everyone who reads this, lock your doors, even when you're home. I'm sure no matter where you live there's no shortage of stupid people that would actually break into your house when you're home. Cats are gorgeous, but no use for defending you or your house. If you're nice to people, there's always going to be someone willing to help you out.
Oh, and don't have the TV turned up too loud. Even if it is Star Wars.

Bad shit always seems to happen to the best people. That's my life theme right now, all the good people in my life are getting fucked over. It's awesome, and by awesome, I mean the shit stain on the underoos of the universe.

That kinda really sucks.
Makes me glad I live as high up as I do. The only way into my home is through the freakin' front door, and since the whole apartment is about the size of a shoebox, I'm pretty sure if anyone ever tried breaking into it he'd have my fist firmly embedded in his mouth before he even crossed the threshhold.
Also, 1Point21Gigawatts makes a very good point.

Every one of the windows and doors in my house beeps if opened. When I'm home alone, occasionally the downstairs door has opened on its own (faulty latch), and freaks the shit out of me. I keep two baseball bets in my bedroom for just such an emergency. My dog is too big a pussy to help out in that case, but would most likely bark a lot (and then run and hide) if someone was actually in the house.

The strange thing is, they didn't even see that there was no car in the driveway. They must have come over the back fence which backs onto a road and a little bit of bush. I had a point to this, but now I've forgotten what it was....

Know the feeling all too well. Like when your car gets broken into and the next day it feels weird to drive because a stranger has been sat in your seat...
Me and my last girlfriend got broken into by her stalker, he took her perfume and a bag with sandwiches in it for work, fucking weirdo. Similar scenario, we figured out from the entry points and the back door being open, the times the dog was barking etc that he had been hidden behind the kitchen door when my ex went downstairs to the toilet and that she had walked straight past this guy and shut him in thinking her dad had just left the door open drunk or something.
We figured it out because after she'd gone back to bed we'd heard the dog barking at the guy as he left (only time the dog ever barked at anyone was when they were leaving)... I was creeped out for months after that.

I would not worry too much, the person who broke into your home probably saw a house with no cars parked infront and thought no one was home. He probably realized you were home when you shut the door, became panicked grabbed your bag and ran outside as quickly as possible. I don't know if you live on a busy street or not, but he left the bag behind for 1 of 2 possible reasons
A. He was on foot and did not want to be seen carrying a bag at midnite. If he was on foot more than likely he lives nearby, ask the police if your neighbors have been burglarized recently
B. More than likely he had transportation, and just left the bag behind because he throroughly searched it once safely outside your home
One thing you definately need to make sure of is that none of your underwear or clothing was taken by this person, also ask your mother if she has anything missing. There is a very very very remote possibility that this guy is a fetish burgular and has stolen small personal effects from you before. I seriously doubt it, but its better to be safe than sorry.
If something like this ever happens to you again immediately run out of your home screaming at the top of your lungs. Wake the neighbors, and call the police immediately so that they have a fresh undisturbed crime scene to work with. I do not know the size of your police department, but if it has a forensics unit then there is a good chance that those detectives are on call.
oh and a +2 for watching episode 6
