In my house there is a box. It's the same box that many of you may also harbor in your home. Whether this container in question be a decorated cardboard shoebox, a carved wooden affair, or a plastic Tupperware box like mine; the contents are quite similar. A letterbox; a box that holds your most intimate missives and correspondences.

Until recently this box was kicking around in the trunk of my car, out of sight out of mind. Not that the Box held bad memories, only strong ones that plagued my thoughts when pushed into view; an obvious reminder of love and loss. This box in now sitting on my living room floor, seemingly innocuous, but heavy with meaning. I rather not move it, for where would I put this box of letters?

I dare not open it, I can imagine the scent of paper and cologne wafting into the air...an olfactory explosion of slightly stale scent. But I cannot bring myself to toss aside these letters, so filled with meaning and passion. Passion, remember that? At twenty-two I stand daunted by a plastic box willed with scented love letters, scared and melancholy to remember the past. To recall the hands that wrote those letters is to submit to the yearning that those hands created in my body and heart. But to destroy those pieces of Us would heal a wound better left unmended, as some better part of me lies placid among those folded and enveloped dispatches.

And oh, how apt if I were to subject those pages of ink to a gloom beneath my bed, left only to color my dreams. Much like the men who penned those words, left only to my midnight mind; dwelling on the past in a dreamlike state. And yet, that box under my bed is alive. Living in my thoughts like a heat or presence; a barely perceptible touch on the small of my back, my most intimate violation.

Good post. Very good title.

I'm surprised by the recognition the Old Beatles tune gets. Bravo!

+2 for the Beatles reference.

You, sir, certainly rock for noticing. You are my hero.

not really compelling subject matter for me personally... but very well written.

Oh, I love your magazine. My favorite section is `How to Increase
Your Word Power.' That thing is really, really, really ... good.
