It's a lot like Quantum Leap where Bart gains control of a person's body and mind for a brief period of time in order to achieve some short term goal before leaping to the next person vessel.
Bart used to be a 29 year old dorky white guy from Chicago, but now he is a 23 year old black man from East St. Louis. In next week's episode, Bart will leap into the body of a 19 year old Brazilian female dancer. With any luck, that's where he'll be trapped for an extended period of time.

I only think we should calculate hits for the posts themselves, I could care less about the total count. You know how one would put a counter on a website or on an eBay auction? That kind of thing is alright with me.

hits are a double-edged issue. i think that ubersite wouldnt be as popular as it is qhich means that while there would be less dickheads, there would also be less gold; but hits are what also poisons the site. most of the bad things about ubersite can pretty much be directly attributed or at least shown to have a clear link to hits, hitwhoring, etc. barts comments about hits being a commodity, and especially a commodity for which the owner has no ostensible use other than for some petty, virtual pissing contest is fucking spot on. i would probably be happy (now, but ask me this a year ago and the answer might have been different) if uber didnt record hits or any shit like that - just a forum where people can write, read, rate and relate to other people.
being bored at uni between tutorials sucks. i think im gonna go make some friends so i stop sitting here replying.

The hits are calculated from the web server log files. The log files rotate with some amount of frequency. As of now, there are about 2400 separate log files for all time. There is a cron job that runs every hour which does something like:
update_message_hits.pl access_log.*
and apparently the shell doesn't like having a command with 2400 separate command line arguments.
So no, it's not intentional, it's a complete fluke. I was also out of town in St Louis at the Final Four when it broke and have not had time to modify the script yet. I probably won't have time tonight or tomorrow, so maybe sometime over the weekend.
3. I don't care about the numbers other than out of curiosity. I think they make the site worse only in the sense that people see hits as some sort of bizarre commodity that don't have any actual benefit other than some arbitrary status ranking.
It's my belief that what you write is important, but that who reads it is also important. If I write the world's best piece and nobody ever reads it, sure I can take comfort in knowing my own work, but I would also be disappointed to know that my message has not been heard.
Hits are nothing more than hits. The number of times a web page was viewed. That has no translation to quality or value or anything other than "number of times a web page was viewed". I think it's an important property, but not THAT important.

I'm actually losing interest without the hits. A lot of people don't review something they read, so it's hard to tell if something was really worth posting. Plus, I lead a pretty empty life with no other real place for my creative output. And I'm the type of person that requires reciprocation in order to be fulfilled. I just have many, many problems...
A lot of people abuse the system, but why change it now out of the blue? People have been fucking with this site from the beginning. My #1 suggestion for the moment would be to have a 'watch list' built into our accounts. It would essentially be a list that could be controlled by us in our accounts that would allow us to add and remove users from our personal viewing. We wouldn't have to use it that way if we didn't want, but it would be left up to us what sort of uber experience we wanted. It could also serve to alert us when our favorite authors have posted. This would at least make it easier to find the stuff that we care to read.
Under this structure, those who enjoy the rabble and the hitwhoring could revel in it to their heart's content. Those who don't enjoy it could simply ignore or exclude certain users, and even be alerted when their favorite users posted.
If there was one thing that could be done to improve quality of posts without going around banning people, and at the same time acheiving the dream of making the site self-managing, this would be it.

Here is a theory -
Maybe we have it all wrong. At first no one said anything (maybe not having hits is a glitch and will only last a short while). Then someone decides to post a "Hey, what's going on" (and people are truly split. Some say quit whining n00b it's not what this is about anyway and yet others live solely for them and are really upset that they are gone). In time, this opens up to more posts about what is really going on and should Uber be changed and if so how, just like this post.
Eventually the whole site is crumbled because that is all anyone can wonder anymore and becomes the topic of every discussion. Uber will become a black hole and cease to exist. Sometimes it's hard to say "I have had enough of this, it's not what I wanted it to be". To put it in another perspective, when you break up with someone is it usually not out of the blue. There is almost always a precursor or indication to the other that ultimately leads to some sort impending change. Is it easier to actually tell them that you no longer wish to date them and see the hurt in their eyes or to just not return phone calls and ignore them away? Maybe that is what Bart is trying to say.

I want the hits, perhaps because even though I've been here over a year with not much headway, I still want MVA. The reviews are important of course, and they mean a great deal to me, but it's nice to see that even though only 2 people have reviewed, 100 or so have read it. Call me crazy...

The hits mean nothing excepting showing you how many people read your post and decided it wasn't worth rating against your actuall reviewers. I think it's bullshit. MVA is ok but nobody's going to make it over any of thoes posts. I say fuck it, make it a monthly MVA so we can get more up to date posts. I have noticed that if you want to find something that is written, you will look for it. People find my stuff even though it's been off the front page for awhile or is not most heated. Hell, most of my stuff never gets heated, but I get reviews anyway. I write for my enjoyment, but I also do it to see if others enjoy it as well. Otherwise I'd have volumes here at home like Karl Stallings did. It's not the hits for me. It's the feedback.

2) Bart took down the hits because of the postings of Jacko Johnson. He figured he wouldn't ban the person because why would they post anymore if they weren't getting hits? Perhaps his way of killing alters. More likely though is BArt is JAcko Johnson and he posted those 100 some posts in the past 2 days to test out the system?
3) I think hits per post should be calculated, just don't have a mva or a total hit counter. Hits are a good way of telling just what uber does and doesn't want to see. If you post something that gets 151 hits, you may reconsider before you post something similar to that post again. I mean people could figure out their total hits this way, but whats the point? Too much effort involved and takes the "elite status" away from hitwhores who manage to make the MVA.

100 posts per day per user basically kills the front page. And since thats practically the only way to find out if a user has posted, other than if they are on the MVA or make most heated. Alot of stuff will get buried.
Ubersite is just as much dependent on the shit posters/alters as it is the good writers. The purpose of ubersite is to entertain and to make it something of our own. IF you don't want there to be shit, then don't post shit and don't acknowledge shit. Personally I feel even a cheap laugh is still a laugh.

I do think that if a new user can't maintain a certain rating, the account should be automatically removed, like Pulsehead was/is... Is that site even still there?

Isn't the idea behind this site that it gives people an outet for their creativity. If you don't like what people post, you only have to read their stuff once to figure this out. Then they can post 100 times a day if they want and all you have to do is ignore them!
Just because someone is new, doesn't mean they don't have something interesting to say.
This whole mentality has me baffled. There are people who have been here for a long time who post absolute crud every time. Why shouldn't they be cast away before you decide to stop anyone else from joining?

bart has been living in the gutter ever since Illinois choked late in the second half in the final. He's been living off of discarded needles and rodent stool. Within a week he will get ill and pass on and the pope would have nothing compared to his following... I say we keep hits, but abolish any MVA list (advanced search function etc.). That way you can see how many people you are reaching (if you care) but there would be no real incentive to hitwhore.

There should be a requirement of having a rating of greater than 1.00 to make the MVA. That would discourage the shitposts for the sake of hits.
