These work: Jpegs, gifs, and possibly that other one that's like a gif but not really. Under 1 mb, but I wouldn't push it at 999 kb.
Chippolatte, I've also never had a problem (aside from once early on with a .bmp/.jpeg mixup), but the site occasionally suffers from mild strokes and shuts down certain areas randomly. This week it's been the counting of all hits. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a picture problem again.

jpg, under 750 kb (i've heard, might as well be safe), no spaces in file name, no dodgy symbols etc

i've never had a picture not show up for me as long as it was jpeg. i don't understand why half of all uberusers just can't do it.
