David was recovered by the time Telonya's car reached her apartment. She glanced over as she set the car down. "How you doing?" she asked.
"I'm doing OK," said David. "Sorry you had to see me like that. I guess it's good to get it out of my system, though."
"Well, I'm sorry, too. I didn't realize how bad it had been for you."
The doors opened, and they got out of the car. "I should have told you, there's still a pretty strong undercurrent of hatred running around, as I guess you've noticed. You should be OK, since there's extremely strict laws against hate crimes, but just don't go advertising your religion. I'll try and find you a housing supervisor who's a little more tolerant tomorrow."
David forced a smile as they walked through the door. "OK, thanks. I really appreciate you putting me up here tonight."
Telonya smiled. "Don't mention it. It's my job." She pulled a card out of her pocket. "Can I see your finger, please?"
David extended his hand. "What?"
She brushed his fingertip with the card. "There," she said, handing it to him. "Now your DNA's coded into the apartment database. This card will let you in and out of my apartment."
"Thanks," said David, still a little mystified.
"Try it out. Stick it into that slot there on the wall. Remember that one, under the number four. That's the entrance to my apartment."
David stared at the slot. It seemed to be set into a solid wall. He cautiously tapped the wall next to it. It sounded solid. He shrugged and inserted the card into the slot. The wall in front of him shimmered and disappeared. He smiled. "I guess I shouldn't really be surprised, huh." He walked through the door, with Telonya right behind him. As the wall reappeared, his card came out the slot on the other side. He pocketed it and walked to the center of the large room.
Telonya watched him anxiously. "What do you think?" she asked.
David smiled. "It's great," he said. "Back home, an apartment like this would cost nearly a million dollars." He glanced around the room at various rugs and artwork hanging from walls. "I guess being a guide ranks you pretty highly on the reward spectrum, huh."
Telonya laughed. "Surprising, isn't it? Here, you can sleep in this room right by the door." She pointed into an open room with a bed.
"Thanks," said David. "I'm actually pretty beat. It's been a long day. Do you mind if I turn in now?"
"Of course not. Good night, David."
"Good night, Telonya."
Telonya walked off down a hallway partially hidden by two rugs. David sighed, and then walked into the room. He lay down on the bed, neglecting even to remove his jumpsuit or cover himself. Day one, he thought. Hell of a day. He drifted off quickly.

David was awakened by a scuffling sound at the door. He heard muffled voices. He jumped out of bed and peeked out the doorway. The wall faded away and three figured came through. David withdrew his head from the doorway.
"They've got to be here somewhere," said one voice. It sounded vaguely familiar, but David couldn't place it. "I traced the car registration back to here. I know there's no way he could have gotten another apartment tonight, so he's got to be here, too."
Glynn. David suddenly recognized the voice, and his shock at the intrusion turned to horror. He shrank back against the wall, hoping the men would look past the doorway.
"Split up and search," said Glynn's voice. David heard some more muttering, and then soft footsteps as the mean began walking around.
A different voice piped up. "Hey G, look at that bed. It's been slept in." David knew they were talking about the rumpled sheets on the bed in his room.
"Right. Go check out that room," said Glynn.
David stood against the wall shocked as a figure slipped through the doorway. He seemed to be carrying a weapon of some sort. The shape walked to the bed, poked at it, and said quietly, "He's not here." It then turned back to the door, and stopped.
The shape reared back in shock, and David knew he had been seen. "He's in here, G!" shouted the shape. It then raised its arm with the weapon. David, driven by desperation, dove at the shape's legs. It shouted, and the weapon went off with a loud bang. Both men wrestled desperately on the floor, trying to gain purchase.
The light in the main room went on. "What's going on in here?" asked Telonya. David propped himself up on an elbow, and caught a glimpse of her standing in the hallway, arms spread wide, a questioning look on her face.
"Telonya! It's Glynn!" David shouted. He was suddenly yanked down by a long hairy arm, which reached around his neck. Gasping for breath, he kicked out frantically, and was rewarded with the feel of a solid impact, and the sound of the other man's breath being driven from his body. The grip on his throat slackened, and David wriggled away. Leaving his adversary doubled over on the floor, he ran out into the main room to see Glynn and his henchman nearly smothering Telonya.
"Run!" she shouted, as Glynn turned to follow her gaze. "Get help!"
David stood in the doorway, undecided. Telonya was hurled against the wall by the other man. "Go!" she shouted. "I'll be fine! It's you they're after!"
Glynn turned away from Telonya and his partner, and started toward David. It made his mind up for him; he turned toward the wall and started moving. It melted away before him, and David took off running through the 22nd century night.
