There's something unholy about the desert sand. Scattered with great monuments of rock, the innumerable specks mesh together, forming something very evil. In the encompassing sea of dirt, a man can fall into oblivion--he can lose his mind.
Not that that really matters to me anymore. Sitting on the sizzling leather seat, I try to think back. I try to imagine when it was that I totally lost my mind--probably somewhere between the fire and the Rapture (1).
Sitting beside me is my cousin Emily. Yesterday, she was my cousin Larry (2). On New Years, she died in a car accident (3). Now she's telling me that I am God. She laughingly tells me that my mind is the only thing that exists and that everything else is pure fiction. The bird is graceful but violent. There's something I don't manage to trust it, though. What is it doing up there? Why's does it watch me so? I have a gun, I remember. Shooting an eagle, what a desicration. But that's what I have to do, right? I have to kill and hurt, have to cause pain. That's the only way to rebel. I have to do anything I can to pronounce my Self...To Overcome mankind's morals. I have to be an individual at any cost.
I light another blunt. I stocked up on lots of drugs after I killed Doctor Joyce (4). My mind needs some THC right now. I need to stay stoned enough to not begin thinking that this is actually real.
"Look," Emily shouts suddenly.
There, up on the right, there's a small shack. Emily wants to stop. I agree--I can't stay out in this fucking Sun any longer. It's killing me, this Goddamn flame being shoved in my face. And yet it's light still can't cut through the shadows I see around me.
The car pulls beside the building. There are motorcycles lined up around the building. Good God, there are dozens of them. So many fucking motorcycles. What kind of Godless beings make things things? What kind of sick, sadistic fool creates these beasts? Can't he see the danger?
Emily knocks on the door. Remembering that I'm a sociopath--that's right, Sammy, you're a big boy. Fight the bastards--I shove the door open. Emily, still solid, takes my hand and leads me in.
The smell of booze and pot is overpowering. At first, the flashing red bar gets my attention. Then, the people who are fucking on it.
