Since a few months, here in Holland, we have been hit by a series of what I can only describe as the single reason I watch TV. We've been getting series like The Sopranos, and Six Feet Under. But, I understand these have been out for some time in America.
Can some of you tell me, if these series uphold their good standards, if they stay as good as they are? Seriously, all other tv shows simply fade away compared by this. I won't even mention the level of acting us Hollanders ourselves uphold - UUGH.

Yeah Six Feet Under and the Sopranos rule. Oz was good the first season then it went down the shitter. There was way too much hidden drama. I mean it's fucking prison not a soap opera.

Good taste Nator, Sopranos, and Six Feet Under are the only reasons I pay for HBO. I tape 6'Under for my boss every week.
Oz used to be fun in the beginning, but it went to shit fast and now it's over.
The Sopranos - last season, IMHO, was getting a little too politically correct for me. They'd better snap the fuck out of it next season (whenever that may be) or I'm gonna have to start crushin' skulls man!

Well, I think it takes at least a few months. For movies and games and TV that is.
This all changed though, since we got broadband internet. Why wait four months for Resident Evil when you can download it with Kazaa?
We got a LOT of cybercriminality (if that is what you want to call it).
What is also a big difference compared to America's Social Security, is the fact the government provides people with college support money. College is different here though, only the people who finish the highest form of high school are even allowed to go to it. The educational system is very tough, at the age of ten you already get tests that limit your future job application. For example: If you don't score higher then 535 on a certain CITO test, most schools won't allow you to follow high-level courses.
We also think we are very tolerant. But we're not.
We are indeed a monarchy, Murph, but not as such that the Queen has any real power.. it's pretty ocmplicated. ;/

I'm not American but I wanted to comment by saying that Holland is a cool country.
It's quite similar to England in many ways except Holland's better IMH_didn't_spend_enough_time_in_Holland_to_come_to_a_reasoned_judgement_but_am_feeling_impulsive_O

Thanks, Nator.
So you've got a sort of Social Democratic Monarchy thing going on (with the queen and all)? The people represent the first parliment and the 'government' the other? So people vote on something and the second parliment puts this shit in place?
I'm embaressed to be an American. I feel so detached from the way other contries work.
How long does it take for you to receive American programing, movies, video games, etc?
If you've got the time...

Well, our 'Social Democracy' works pretty good, 's far as I can tell. We don't have really high taxes and uh.. a low unemployment rate. Our government is doing pretty good, but hell, we're small, lot's of shipments from america to europe coming through our country, we don't need no military so I guess they have it pretty easy. We have two parliaments, who check any new bill or law. One parliament is chosen by the 'people'. The people who put these things to work are in the other parliament. These are our ministers. The ministers can't do anything wrong, when they fuck up, our queen has to take the blame. (Yes, we have a queen).
Currently we're in a political crisis, a vegitarian animal-extremist killed the leader of an upcoming political party, Pim Fortuyn. This man was gay, and bald, so seemed to have everything against him yet his unbelievable charisma, and his marvelous debating skills won over many of my fellow countrymen. This does not change the fact that I thought he was an idiot.
The vegitarian has been convicted to 18 years. People are screaming it should be more. People are intend on savagely pulling our judicial system apart, because this punishment does not satisfy their 'needs'.
Anyway, I stray from the point. We are pretty social, and we make it pretty easy for people to survive out there without a job/with a broken leg. It's all about to change though, as the right wing partys take over the first parliament. Oh, and we are very serious about letting other people set up kip in our country, we have tightened the rules so much that they are actually conflicting with UN law. Not that anyone cares about anything they say anymore.
Hope that this sorta answers your question, Murph :)

You guys have a political system called a Social Democracy over there in Holland, no? How much do you get taxed? How well are you social programs? Do you like it?
Oh yeah... Soprano's and 6' Under both rule. I've only seen first season for both. Polly from the Soprano's kicks EVERYONE's ass!
