The first story in the series can be found here.

http://www.ubersite.com/m/40647

Part 1 of the second to last chapter.

My fucking home computer is dead. It's toast along with all of Necro except for the few rough drafts i have on my work laptop.

These next couple aren't as polished as they should be but the story remains the same...

NECROSIAC - AWAKENING

"Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten"

"Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten"

"Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten"

The sound of frantic counting drifted unwanted to Trevors ears just as it had for the previous four hours. He turned in frustration to where Lillith sat on her bed - knees pulled up tight against her chest - and wondered if she had lost her mind for good. He had been there when she'd opened her eyes for the first time and had immediately dropped to his knees in a gesture of servitude, but the newly awaked goddess had taken one frightened look at him then shut her eyes tight and started counting.

Once the counting had started he'd lost her again. He'd tried everything short of hitting her to no avail. He'd done his best to calm her with soothing words, and gentle touch but nothing tore her attention from the numbers spilling out of her mouth like escaping prisoners. Finally he'd come to terms with the fact that whatever had emerged from her mind was far from the woman he'd expected, and he let hope fade to the nothingness from whence it had come.

"Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten"

The strange childlike lilt of her voice grated his nerves like nothing he'd ever experienced ,and all at once, he found himself choking back an urge to wrap his hands around her neck and squeeze until the counting stopped for good. He knew better than to expect her to come back whole and strong from wherever her mind had gone. He'd expected she would need time to recover and was prepared to suffer the consequences of a few more weeks at the cabin, but he hadn't expected the frail thing sitting on the bed.

The knowledge that they were running out of time weighed heavily on him. Spring was close and the weather had been uncharacteristically warm over the last week. A good portion of the snow cover had thawed. It had melted and exposed the dead animals that had been touched by Lillith's power to the sun. Frozen joints became malleable under its warming rays and more and more farmers in the area were reporting incidents of undead attacks. His fathers last trip to town had been met with the kind of short cold demeanor that is only a hairs breadth short of outright accusation. Trevor didn't have to go to there himself to know the situation was bordering on disastrous, the fact his stubborn old man had cut his visit short and returned empty handed was more than enough evidence.

"Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten"

The townsfolk were beginning to turn there suspicions into accusations. He knew it didn't matter whether they were pointed at the right person or not. Eventually it would bring attention to his hiding place. Soon the rumors would bring the law or an angry mob to the door and he'd be forced to defend the frail insane woman before him.

"Goddess"

Suddenly the word didn't feel so light on his tongue and he found himself doubting the Pentate's judgment.

He'd tried to summon Hadrian using his borrowed ear on several occasions over the last month but his call had not been heeded. He'd detached it and whispered into it that he was in a cabin somewhere near Vanderhaven, but no sign that the magic imbued within had worked became apparent.

He wondered if his master had been captured but feared him dead. A man like Hadrian Pasteur did not become captured.

He felt alone and helpless and worse of all, he found himself genuinely enjoying the old mans company.

Trevor returned - frustrated and dejected - back to the main room.

His father sat at the desk, his attention focused as usual, on the thick yellowed pages of the Necrosiad.

He had to admit respect for his father's abilities, he'd managed to identify the rituals designed to trap those who weren't worthy to delve into the books secrets. He'd managed to decipher much of its code and was slowly coming to the realization that it was more a history of the Necrosiac than the Necromancer. The chances that his father would realize the true purpose of the book was getting better all the time, and suddenly Trevor understood that his father would soon put two and two together. He'd understand the book and then he'd understand the true nature of the woman he'd claimed was his wife, and then there'd be hell to pay.

"Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten"

There'd be hell to pay and Trevor wasn't so sure he cared.

"No Time"

The words slipped treacherously out of his mouth and his father turned to him enquiringly.

"What's that?"

He opened is mouth to cover himself with another lie but was interrupted by the grumble on an engine approaching the cabin.

The two men stood side by side and watched as two large, camouflage painted, 4X4 trucks, plowed towards them through the thinning snow on oversized tires.

"That would be Bernie Lomack" his father grunted worriedly.

Trevor wiped one sleeve over the window to remove the fog building up on it.

"Lomack... is this going to be a problem father?"

The old man grunted again but didn't answer.

"Is he one of your farmer friends?"

"Nope, He's never really liked me. He's a brutish man and a drunk but he's popular amongst the other brutish drunks in town"

Trevor felt for the familiar hilt of his blade and nodded.

"Trouble then"

"Listen boy... let me do the talking. I don't want lives to be lost here. Even a soul as ugly as Bernie's deserves to carry on"

Trevor shrugged and moved to open the door but was stopped in place by a stern look from his father.

"I want your word on this boy"

"Alright" he lied "No violence under any circumstances"

"Onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten"

Lilly counted as hard as she could but it still didn't work, so she tried to count harder.

As hard as she tried she just couldn't figure out what she'd done wrong.

She'd done as she'd been told like a good girl.

She'd stepped through the door and into the coldness of her other self's body. She'd ignored the scary pale man at her feet, closed her eyes tightly shut and counted to ten but nothing had happened, so she tried again, then again.

The man had tried things to get her to stop but she'd ignored him and continued to count as she'd been told. Eventually she'd come to the conclusion that Taela might not come until he left but she was afraid that, if she stopped counting long enough to tell him to go away, Miss Taela might not be able to find her.

So she counted, then choked back her tears and counted again, and again.

Finally the man had given up and gone into the next room and she tried extra extra hard, but still nothing happened, and she began to wonder if the nice lady wasn't so nice after all.

The sound of a door slamming shut caused her to jump and she opened her eyes and stopped counting, only to find herself alone in the cabin.

She could hear angry voices from somewhere outside and she decided that she did not want to be in that place one second longer. She shut her eyes tight again and prepared to pick up where she'd left off but the sound of a familiar voice calling her name came from the room beyond the bedroom door.

"Lilly Dear"

She sat up straight in the bed and replied in a voice that was not her own.

"Taela?"

"Yes Dear"

The voices outside were turning into shouts but she didn't care.

"Taela!"

"In here"

Lilly jumped out of bed and immediately fell to the floor, the victim of unfamiliar stiffened limbs.

"Hurry Lilly"

"I don't know how to work this body" she cried "I need help!"

No answer came from the room and the sudden fear that she might lose Taela spurred her into motion.

Painfully, she dragged herself across the dusty floor and through the doorway but found herself alone as before.

"Taela?"

The shouting outside was becoming loud enough to scare her but she did her best to ignore it and scan the room for her lost friend"

"I'm here Miss Taela!"

"Over here Honey"

The voice came from the direction of a large wooden table on the far end of the room.

"I can't see you!"

"You have to stand up Lilly. Hurry or you'll lose me!"

Something about the voice didn't seem right to her, but her doubts were brushed away by a mixture of relief and the fear that she might lose the closest thing she had to a mommy forever. She dragged herself to the wall then grabbed a shelf and used it to pull herself to stand on shaking legs.

Through the window she could see a big man in a dark blue winter jacket and matching toque, pull a long barreled rifle from the cab of his truck. He pointed it at something near the other side of the door and then dropped it and gurgled loudly as the hilt of a knife appeared in his neck.

"Hurry Lilly!"

The voice was sounding less and less like Taela's and she found herself hesitating, unsure what to do.

A loud bang came from the other side of the door and a hole the size of a quarter appeared in it. Suddenly the shouting turned into screams followed by another shot and the window disintegrated into a million shards.

"Lilly!"

The sound of her name ripped her from her momentary paralysis and she lurched to the desk and the leather book sitting at its center.

"In here"

The voice came from the book and all at once she remembered her special escape places strewn throughout her old house.

"Open me to the last page"

Lilly awkwardly did as she was told as a new scream erupted from beyond the door, this one long and wet.

"I want to go home" she whimpered as the strange letters on the page began to blur then swirl as if caught in a vortex.

"No" replied the voice coldly.

Suddenly she completely understood that she wasn't talking to Taela and tried to turn away, but the book had her. She could feel the room around her become distant and dark as she slowly joined the swirling symbols in their spiraling journey.

"I am not for home" hissed the book "I am for awakening"

Just as I grow fond of a character, you always take them away from me.

Kre8ix,

I have no idea what happened bro. I upgraded it myself recently, just as I have with every system I've ever had but it just won't power up. Hopefully tonight I can get it running.

====================

Munkey,

I'll be there at 1 minute past midnight, just leave the bedroom window open and think happy thoughts.

I should warn you. After your bath, we're both going to need a shower.

I haven't read Clive Barker in years, but something about your writing brings him to mind. Solid, a little creative explosion. +++
(Must read 1st part, there's just too much of too much on this site.)
