I'm going to forewarn you with some important pieces of information:
1. It's after 5am and I'm tired, so forgive my incoherence
2. This contains a lot of poker lingo
3. This is 100% true
"Tonight" (Friday night) I didn't have any plans to do anything. I worked a little late and then went to a clothing store in Wicker Park that's supposed to be open until 11pm, but was closed when I got there at 9. I then went down the street a few doors to go to a coffee shop named Filter and got a coffee to go.
To go where?
Well, over the course of the last couple years I've grown interested in the game of poker, probably because it's seemingly on four different cable stations 24 hours a day. I've played the game, specifically "Limit Texas Hold 'Em", a bunch of times at various casinos and have always managed to do reasonably well. In $2/$4 games, I generally seem to leave the table about $50 up after a few hours of playing. Not professional level, but I'm also not running back to the ATM every twenty minutes.
In case that tangent didn't make it obvious, I decided that since I had nothing to do tonight, I would drive to a casino to play poker. My first stop was just over the Indian border at the Horseshoe casino which as it turns out does not have a poker room. Because of that, I ended up at Harrah's.
I had to wait a while for a table, but eventually I ended up at a $5/$10 table, meaning that the minimum bet is $5. This is a little steeper than the $2/$4 I'm used to playing, so I was going to have to be a little more cautious than normal, considering I was still only going to cash in for $100.
Things were going smoothly, so I was never up much or down much. I did get down to my last chips a couple times, but whenever I was all in, I would win the pot to bring me back up around my original stack.
This is where it gets weird.
I get dealt an Ace of clubs and a 10 of spades. Certainly a good Hold 'Em hand, but nothing ridiculous. The guy next to me raises before the flop, so I call him as does one other guy.
The flop comes up and it's a 7, 9, and an Ace. They're all different suits, so there's no flush draw, meaning I have top pair with my Aces.
The other guy (not the one next to me) bets $5 into me. If he doesn't have an Ace, this is a really weird bet. I'm thinking that he could have an Ace and a higher kicker than my 10, something like an Ace and a Queen. I couldn't stand the thought of folding a pair of Aces with nothing else showing, but I couldn't justify raising, so I called him. The guy next to me (the one who raised earlier) now only calls the bet.
The turn - another Ace. Sweet. Now I have three Aces with the 10 kicker. The guy next to me now bets and the other guy folds. This means "other guy" didn't have an Ace, and the guy next to me probably doesn't either or else he would have raised earlier. Either way, we're down to two people, just me and the guy next to me.
The river - no shit - another Ace. In case you've lost track, here's the cards I see:
My Hand:
A 10
Board:
7 9 A A A
I have four Aces, so I bet my $10 and the guy next to me calls. I flip over my cards to show my four Aces, and he yells out "Fuck!" and flips over a pair of Kings.
He had a full house - Aces over Kings - and lost to four Aces.
Well, everyone else at the table starts screaming at yelling. I'm a little confused at first until I heard someone yell "You got the bad beat!"
For those who don't know what a bad beat is, it's a prize that the casino gives out for a great hand (such as a full house of Aces over Kings) that loses to an even better hand (in this case, four Aces).
In my head, I'm thinking, "Oh cool, the guy next to me won something like $500 for having this bad beat hand."
In actuality, the prize was not $500... it was just over $15,000! It's a progressive pot that builds over time, and apparently it had been building for five days.
Not only that, but the way it works is that the "bad beat" guy - this guy next to me - only gets 50% of the pot. The person who beat that guy - me - gets 25% of the pot. The rest of the money gets divided among everyone else playing at the table who was in on the hand. That's why they were all so excited.
After the different casino guys came over to validate everything and take pictures, the result was that I won about $3,700 because of that hand. Everyone else at the table got something like $600 with the exception of the guy next to me who walked out with over $7,000! To add to the mix, this was also his first day ever playing poker in a casino.
And of course, because Uncle Sam doesn't like folks having too much fun when he's not invited to the party, a prize of this size meant that the casino deducted federal and state taxes before giving me the winnings. Even with the taxes taken out, my initial $100 buy in turned into $3,028 by the time I left.
The funniest part of the whole thing is that when I drove home, I took US41 (aka. Lake Shore Drive) instead of the tollway because I didn't want to pay the ridiculous $5 of tolls on the Skyway. Old habits die hard.
As proof of this night's events, included below is a picture of me with my four day stubble and bad ass pirate shirt that I was wearing at the casino.
Below that is a picture of $3,028 in cash sitting on my table. You can tell it's my table because who in their right mind would take a picture of $3,028 in cash sitting on a table next to an Easter basket?

In Canada, proceeds from gambling are tax free. This makes for a really interesting group of people that play poker 28.4 hours a day and have a fear of showers.
My best friend actually sat at a table where a guy got the bad beat, just for playing he walked out with a couple hundred bucks--the sucker next to him folded out of the hand and ended up with a pair of jeans filled with his own shit. (Because he shit them after he saw all the money being counted out to the table to people drunk enough to ante up with a 3/4 off suit).

"if you have four of a kind does it really matter what your kicker is"
Yes. A poker hand consists of five cards. Mine was four Aces and a 10.
What part of this don't you understand?

"I find this hard to believe because all of the casinos I play in require you to use both your hole cards for a bad beat. In the case of 4 of a kind you would have had to have pocket Aces."
I did use both of my hole cards. A poker hand consists of five cards, so my hand was four Aces and the 10. If there had been a Jack on the board instead of the 7 or the 9, my hand would have been four Aces and the Jack, meaning I only would have used one of my hole cards, meaning it would not have qualified.
------------------------------------------
I'll clarify...If you want to use 4 of a kind for any type of bad beat/high hand, you would have to have pocket pair and two of them on the board. Having one in your hand and three on the board would not count. That is how the casinos I go to do it. Having three Aces on the board makes it easier to hit a bad beat qualifying hand. Plus if you have four of a kind does it really matter what your kicker is.

There's so much bad poker going on here I don't know what to say...
#1 No good poker player would cold-call a preflop raise with A-10 offsuit in a limit game unless they knew the person who raised was a maniac.
#2 No even halfway decent poker player would continue pushing with Aces out on the board while holding pocket kings.
#3 More often than you realize, that A-10 which paired on the flop is actually losing to an Ace hand with a better kicker... The bookends are a sucker hand a lot of the time... you end up having to play it, and lose.
#4 However, you did play right on the river... once you made your trips you had to know that the chances of someone having an ace were pretty small.
#5 Whoever it was who said you made all 3 of your outs does not know as much about hold 'em as they think they do. They neglected the additional outs (small ones, but nevertheless existent) of you getting a straight or a set of 10s.

I understand the 'bad beat', but how is it really a bad beat?
When you have pocket kings and theres an ace on the flop and 2 opponents come out betting, you have to kind of expect it..

Ah, right, I didn't really read what he had written. Still, Aces over Kings beats Kings over 3s.
Because of the bad beat rules, bob's hand wouldn't qualify because he wouldn't beat Aces over 10s. That's an ever worse beat - not only does he lose the hand, but he also doesn't get a $15,000 pot.

bob, this guy's bad beat was worse than yours. You lost your hand of three Kings to a flush. This guy lost a hand of Aces full of Kings to Four Aces.
The bad beat rules are that:
1) Both the winner and loser of the hand must use both of their hole cards to make their hand
2) The losing hand must beat Aces full of 10s
3) Both hands must show. If he had mucked his pair of Kings, his hand would have been dead and none of this would have happened.
And most certainly, this part was all luck. I didn't even know these rules until after the hand was over. However, I also ended the night up $200 from my buy in.

This makes me want to organize the first annual Syracuse Uber Poker Invitational.
It wouldn't be high stakes, of course, but it would be fun.
Congratulations Bart.

No, seriously.
I was playing bingo one day, and some jackass next to me won $7,500 because of some dumb progressive where he had a purple troll doll symbol on his card and won on a certain number.
I hate it when fortune befalls on someone other than me.
