I was flipping radio stations while waiting at a 4-way intersection today in my Mom's Ford Explorer.

Before I stepped on the gas pedal to cross the intersection into the parking lot of the grocery store, I did a quick look to the right and left. Cars were coming from both ways on the main road, doing the 40 mph speed limit. As I settled back to look for some acceptable tunes, knowing it could be a while at this particular intersection, my eye caught something.

It was a kid, two steps into running across the busy road.

I didn't have time to look, I didn't have time to think-- I just did what my brain was screaming at me to do.

I stepped on the gas, sending my Mom's car into the intersection.

After all, what's easier to see-- a 3 year old kid dressed in neutral colors or a big ass candy apple red SUV?

People from both sides slammed on their brakes, stopping literally inches from hitting me on my left. Cars were honking their horns, oblivious to what the hell just happened, and frustrated with my antics.

I threw open the driver's side door, dangerous amounts of adrenalin coursing through my veins. I rushed over to the toddler, scooped him up, and then crossed the road with him in my arms. The honking stopped--finally the other drivers understood why I did what I did. If I hadn't the poor kid would have been a goner for sure.

I was so angry and stressed that I had tears streaming down my cheeks while I scanned the parking lot for the kid's mother.

There she was, standing in front of her expensive-looking car, gaping at me as I carried her child over to her.

When I got to her, and the kid reached out for her, it was then that she finally came to her senses.

"Oh my God! I'm so sorry!!" Whether she was apologizing to the kid, God, or to me, I couldn't tell through her tears. She took her son into her arms, cradling him so close that any closer and she could have been smothering him. I shook my head, trying to regain my own senses, as cars started honking in the intersection again, since I left my Mom's car just sitting there.

"What the hell were you thinking, woman??" It was a simple enough question; after all, she should have been looking after her kid so close to a busy intersection.

Finally, she addressed me directly. "I was letting him play in the grass! I didn't think he'd run away like that! I only had my back turned to him for a second while I put the groceries away!"

It was my turn to gape at her in disbelief.

"You FUCKING LET YOUR KID PLAY NEAR A BUSY INTERSECTION?!!?!? What the goddamn fucking hell were you thinking?!?!?!" I was screaming at her, I'll admit it. It's common sense NOT to let them do stuff like that. What a horrible mother. Maybe I should have handled the situation better than that, but I was so angry. Maybe what I did was warranted, hell, I don't know.

I did know that I needed to get away from her right then, or else there'd end up being a brawl in the Shaw's parking lot. I turned and walked back to my Mom's car, got in, and drove away, shaking from so many emotions. It took me an hour to calm down, but it was worth it.

I saved a child's life today.

Thanks Manda, I'm over myself now.

You know, in all honesty, I think this little tiff was good for both of us, a learning experience, if you will. It gave me a chance to hone some skill, and I hope you got something out of it too.

Here's where I stand on what you did that day: You did everything that I would have done, and I wouldn't have felt bad about it.

Why did I attack your character? Because of 2 things.

1. Im a big fucking hypocrite.

2. I am mean spirited.

Thank you, and have a nice time sloring around in Canadia (OMG IM JOKING!1!!!)(MAYBE!!!1!!!!)

Rad, I read your post. Brilliant. I'm about to go tell you that on it now, if I have time. Though, the mother wasn't young by any means.

But anyway, hope all is going well for you Uberpeople.

I agree with you there bub, the point I was attempting was that the narrator placed herself in a bad situation, and by the grace of god did not have a multitude of things happen. The author reacted with indifference to these points, and with that attitude you encounter in people of the teenage variety--invincibility and shortsightedness.

If it was her place to make the mother feel stupid, it is then my place to make her feel stupid for what she did.

One more thing, you show the child as crossing the intersection from a corner.

I don't know how you massholes do it, but out here in the wild west, we have something called the pedestrian's right of way. Regardless of the light colour or directionality of traffic, as long as the pedestrian crosses from a corner, or at a crosswalk.

That kind of takes legal responsibilty away from the mother and child, and places you back in the crux I proposed earlier.
--------------------------------------------

My brother was 10, I was 12. We were crossing the street to get to our mom's car. We are at the corner of an intersection, in the crosswalk, with no stop signs for the road we are crossing. My brother walks into the street in front of a speeding ricer. I pulled him back (ok, i lied about saving little kids' lives) right before the car got there. I freak out:

"What the fuck are you thinking?" (translated into 12-year-old speak)

"I'm allowed to cross here. It's the driver's fault if he hits me."

You know what? He was right. But winning your court case will not change the fact that you got hit by a car. Dead is dead.

I understand what you're saying.

I look at it differently, though. The kid would have been dead (guaranteed) if I hadn't done that. As for them trying to sue me if someone's car had hit my Mom's Explorer? That wouldn't have worked out very well, given the fact that it was the Mom's fault that her son was running across the road. Her car was parked about 25 feet away. She had turned her back for a second? Bullshit! Kids can't run that fast. She should have been watching him, but she wasn't. That makes her a bad parent.

Plus, the fact that she let her kid play on a 5 foot wide strip of grass in the first place is ridiculous. So what if I made her cry even harder by yelling at her? She deserved it, in my opinion. She probably deserved a whole lot worse, too.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Wow, you really are a brainless little shit, aren't you? Have you never had to look after kids in your life? Unless you attach the kid to a three-foot long leash and watch him every second, there's no way you can always keep them out of trouble. You try getting basic errands done while watching a screaming, kicking kid all the while and then see if you don't feel like shoving them into traffic yourself. Judging by the fact that the mother had an "expensive" car, she obviously had money. Considering that she was actually taking care of her own kid when she easily could have hired a nanny means that she's probably a great parent. So you, you little sanctimonious pile of rabbit feces, can go get raped by a goat and then maybe just worry about yourself.

You had good intentions. Yeah, there could have been consequences but
it was a split second life or death situation. You leaned towards
saving the child. Not a bad thing.

I can understand your frustration at the mother. She isn't necessarily
a bad mother albeit a stupid one. I don't have kids but even I know
they can run quicker, way quicker than an adult, towards danger.
One time I turned my back for 2 seconds to tie my shoe and my niece
decided it was a great time to run like the wind towards the friggin street.

I'm sure the mom learned her lesson that day. She learned a hard lesson
without losing her child.

Yea, I had to skid to a halt in my truck the other day because a parent sucked at parenting. I swear to god, I was stopped in the middle of the road for about 15 seconds while the kid was scared motionless before the mom noticed all the commotion that would have been her son's death had I not canged my brakes recently. In retrospect, I should have hit the little bastard. Assuming that the child wasn't adopted or some shit like that, the child has some pretty shitty genes and would probably be better off dead. Damn knee jerk reactions making me save shitty kids lives.

Oh, and they're right. If you had been sideswiped in your SUV you probably would have rolled onto the kid, then exploded, then been sued leaving you horribly disfigured and in debt for the rest of your miserable life. You can be sued because, all though you thought you were doing the right thing, you were in fact violating the law (failure to yield to the right of way), putting you at fault. I probably would have fucked up the mother's car just to teach her a lesson.

Oooh, I plan on it.

Which leads me to my next point: I'm logging off now for a looong time. (If you have no idea why, look in my past posts)

Goodnight everyone.

Your meddling has caused a holocaust.

That child's name is William Roy Funt. In 2060 he will become the first President of the United States to be elected by cybervote. The wetwired majority of registered voters, addicted to the net and ignoring all things outside cyberspace, will embrace Funt and his campaign slogan 'Fuck Hard,' and his anti-hardware, anti-hardcopy philosophy. Funt will eventually convince this mass of 18-40 year old Americans that wetware is essential to life and there is a genuine danger in anyone not wetwired into the 70 existing internets (through a subnanotechnology that creates a communal mind and can easily be passed on their children through DNA infiltration). Anyone who is not wetwired, or reads books or studies history instead of fixating on the future, or watches old-fashioned holoteevees instead of massmind transmissions, or wants to 'discuss' and 'debate' current events, or occasionally wants some 'alone time' with their own thoughts, will be rounded up and sent to Cerebral Reformatting Centers where their brains will be removed and their bodies will be stored for spare parts for members of the mass mind. Bodies not up to reassignment standards will be cremated.

The mass mind resistance sent two operatives back in time and had hoped they would run down Funt, but your impulsiveness has ruined that plan and caused the deaths of 1.5 billion people.

We will try again soon. Funt must die.

the people that are bitching are the type of people who sue a doctor after their family member gets killed in an auto accident and a doctor just happened to try to save the person's life.

And yelling at the mother, calling her a horrible mother is kind of sanctimonious, is it not?

Not trying to make you stress out there, honey.

I'm just laying all the cards out on the table. Using this as a learning experience.

While you did a very good thing today, it could have gone horribly wrong.

Rad, scoot along. This is the only response you'll get by trying to make me stress out even more. It's not going to work.

you don't think a vehicle hitting your mommies suv would have been pushed into the kid?

You got lucky that you aren't being sued for the death of that kid.

I swear, you kiddies should be allowed to drive until you are 21
