No I'm not some Shovanist completely against the progression of Females.
I won't disagree in saying that the Feminist movement did not have some extremely positive outcomes, such as the progression of women's rights concerned with a plethora of dimensions.
However the feminist movement in Australia (in particular the movement for participation in the workforce), from the Second World War, has been the cause of one of the largest problems Australia will have to deal with in the future.
Anyone familiar with Australian politics will know that recently there has been a growing concern over the aging population and the implications that this will possess for individuals, businesses and the Government, such as welfare blow outs and a contracting economy with no workers to support the aged.
Australia's natural birth rate has been at a negligible (at times even negative, currently averaging 1.6 children per couple), with population only growing significantly as a result of immigration.
Why has the Australian natural birth rate stagnated?
The Feminist movement
During WWII men had to leave to fight, which meant that the only possible way to continue the country was to allow women into the workforce to replace the men who had left to fight. Obviously family growth around this time would also have been insignificant, but it was not the greatest problem that the Government was concerned with at the time and something that presumably would have been easily rectified at the end of the War.
Unfortunately it started a trend that has lead to the aforementioned problem. Women got a taste for the workforce, and helped along by further contributors (increasing desires for equality, incomes and other similar factors) the family has suffered.
In today's modern and ultra-materialistic world many families are delaying or inhibiting their family life. The size of families has dwindled and the desire of a strong family life has succumbed to the desire for money (with the aim of attaining the said family life). These factors can be traced back to Women's entrance into the workforce.
Women's entrance into the workforce has meant that the family has been pushed aside and as a result the natural birth contribution to the population has also suffered. Women are more concerned with achieving monetary desires rather than the families of old which consisted of easily more than 5 children when women were stay-at-home mothers and were able to care for that magnitude of children.
Now with many women working there is no one to stay at home and look after many children or any at all for that matter, which leaves women (and couples) to put off childhood until early to mid thirties and then only to have small families.
The Australian Government has had to bring in workers through skilled migration programs to compensate for the already prevalent gap that is developing in the Australian workforce, if this problem is already occuring it is hard to imagine the magnitude of the problem that will be experienced in the foreseeable future.
In saying that the Government would not need to bolster the Australian workforce with immigrants if families were growing and it can be argued that families are not growing as a result of women working and therefore not supporting the families that will be the future workforce.
To look at it in economic terms the J curve (usually reserved for imports and exports in relation to an exchange rate) can also be vaguely employed, in that, while the quantity of workers initially increases (as women first entered the workforce) the quantity eventually fall as there is a gap in the supply of workers (0 population growth leading to a gap in a participating workforce in the future) with the number of growing families acting as the balance (the exchange rate).
Australia cannot afford a failing workforce, while the current growth being experienced should be enjoyed, sight can not be lost of the big picture where a gaping hole in the workforce will essentially lead to an inward looking economy which can not grow and will need to be supported through migrant workers. As indicated before, this is a result that can be linked to the inclusion of women in the workforce. The Australian government needs to understand that in this ever-increasing materialistic world more emphasis needs to be placed on the family, because money isn't the only thing that makes the world go round.

Look at Japan. That is a fairly sexist society and they are having the same problem with falling birth rates, so I don't think you can pin this soley on feminism.

Emile Shovan (1919-1970), noted agitator and propagandist. Emile Shovan gained notoriety during World War II by displaying placards and passing out pamphlets on the streets of Prague mocking himself (and by extension the Czech people) for submitting to Nazi rule.
Narrowly escaping execution, he fled Prague for the countryside until the war's end, where he resumed his buffoonery, apparently unaware of the defeat of Nazi Germany.
He died of syphilis in 1970.

Secondly, Caul is right this is why immigration is a good thing. The only problem with using immigration to keep your population level is the current trend of newer cultures not assimilating, but making their own communities, which blows.

Sweetie, I think perhaps that you shouldn't be worrying that women aren't staying home and not having babies. I think perhaps you should worry more that Natural Selection (a la Darwim) will get you just like the genetically-unfavorable-for-survival creature that you are.

It's great that birth rates fall. It stabilizes world populations. We let in immigrants en masse to close the gap between generation so they leave their overcrowded countries and help us. It's evolution and it's working great! Unless you care about the future of the caucasian, I don't see where's the problem.
