Below is an email between myself and my older sister, that I had forgotten I saved (for some benign reason..) It reads from the bottom-up, as in all emails.
This all happened because I decided to start my own company and needed some "short term" funds to get thigns ramped up. Believe it or not, the "lender' was my older sister, whose husband makes an ungodly amount of income. We're talking 7 digits annually. So I made the mistake of being a bit overly optimistic about repayment. She did get her money - all of it - this past September. On my birthday I receieved no card from her, but an email simply stating, "Do you think you'lll be able to send the rest before Thanksgiving."
Nice, huh? After reading it I can only summon "Fucking greedy."

Adele:
Yes I am certainly going to pay the money. I understand your irritation but please do not think for a minute that I won't. You know me better than that. It is simply taking longer than I expected.
Three deals were to have closed and funded this week, and only one closed. It has been a struggle, to say the least. Damn deals get screwed up by the title company or the lender.....
I have a deal that funds Tuesday, the other closes Monday and funds Friday, and the other one closed Thursday, funding Tuesday the 15th.
Everything (PC) crashed on Thursday nite, and I had to buy a damn new PC. Shitty timing for sure....And I still have not been able to transfer my data from the old to the new. I probably lost a lot, if not all.
The trip to FL was a drive - gas only and stayed for free. I had to get a way for a few days....don't forget that Rich is also still here in this 910 sq ft condo after nearly four months....And now with his 10pm to 7 am job, guess where he has to sleep. It has been a challenge.
Insofar as the cottage, the deposit of $135 was paid via credit card, as I didn't have the cash.
I apologize for taking as long as I have, and I certainly do not want the impression that I am taking advantage of you. This has been a litle more difficult than I expected.. I would hope, however, that you have faith in that I will without question pay you back.
I can just start sending a check here and there instead of trying to save up the whole amount to send to you. The first check will go out Tuesday as soon as I get confirmation of the wire going through. I hope this does not affect our friendship, Adele. This just hasn't been that easy - but you WILL get repaid.
I will send you a total of $3000.00 to make up for the delinquency - it was never my intent for this to take as long as it has.
Having to make three mortgage payments in March (for Feb, Mar, and Apr) also strained things, as did a few other items.
I don't think calling you today to dicuss this would be good because I sense a deal of frustration, anger and maybe a little hostility.
I will call after I put the check in the mail Tuesday (barring any screw ups...)
Thank you for being patient.
Matt

> Please explain to me what is going on ... are you going to pay the $2,500 or not. You didn't e-mail me or call as you indicated that you would. From my stand point I'm wondering what is going on. In October when I first agreed to lend you the money you promised very emphatically that you would pay the money back within a month. The next thing I know you want to hold back paying any money until I say I would at least like half of it at the current time, which was December and already later than what you had previously promised. Then you promised that you would pay the money by the end of the year... That time passed and I said I would like the money by the end of March because we pay real-estate taxes at that time...All of that has passed and I get another e-mail saying you would send $500 but we don't receive it and instead I receive an e-mail saying you didn't send it because you didn't hear back from me. In the meantime, I hear you have gone to Florida and you have booked a cottage for Canada and yet I don't hear anything from you, even when you say you will call me... How do you think I'm feeling right now about agreeing to help you out and sending $5000?
It's apparent to me that I am a low priority in your bill paying schedule. Let me just state that after 7mos.of waiting to get paid, I am very disappointed in how you have treated me. Just because I am family doesnt't mean it's ok to keep putting this off. You agreed to something back in October, and I agreed to lend you the money based on the promises you made to me. I understand that you are trying to get a business up and running but the way I see it you also seem to have money for other things (like the trips) but still seem to delay paying me.

Maybe you would make more money if you weren't posting 11 times a day on Uber. Ever think of that little fella?

Nice Sass, real nice. Encouraging to know that there are still people with a vocabulary from the days of slavery. And BTW, I am caucasian, so there!
To you other idiots - I was not welching. When you are self-employed, commission only, with a brother living with you for free, and having to mamke a 1500 mtg payment, I simply wasn't able to pay it all off in one big chunk.
I offered (though not in that thread) to pay 50 or 100 a month. Her reply was "Can't you just send 500 a month?"
My main point was - You would think family, and in particular one with that much wealth, would provide a little latitude. Saying that I was welching on the debt is incorrect. That happens when you DON'T pay. I did. Just, a litle, slower than I had arranged. All my fault, I know that.

Doesn't matter how much money her husband makes - you should pay back the money when you say you will. It's not a question of whether she can afford it, you're just being rude by making her wait this long.
Don't expect any favors from her in the future, that's all I can say.
