To answer my own question, "No". In fact G.W.Bush is a political and military genius; it's the loud-mouthed idiots like CookieLass that make us look bad. To wit:

Texas joined the Confederate Union, which was at war with the United States. They didn't declare their right to secede, they aligned themselves with an Enemy of the State, and therefore became at war with the US.
Learn government before you try to teach me about my own state history.

IF Texas didn't "declare their right to secede" it seems odd that they would bother to have a "Secession Convention" beginning on Feb. 1, 1861 and adopt an "Ordinance of Secession" and issue a "Declaration of Causes".

Texas was the only state that let it's citizens actually vote on whether or not to secede. Nevertheless, Texas didn't have the "right" to secede than and doesn't "retain" it now.

While siding with the Confederate states in the Civil War, Texas is not generally considered "southern" in the redneck, hillbilly way you describe. There are some geographically similarities, barbeque & cornbread spring to mind, but generally speaking Texas is more western than southern. You perhaps are confusing the Lone Star State with Alabama.

That is a common misconception, that she may or may not have actually been taught in school. It comes from the annexation resolution signed between the country of Texas and the US. That rumor may come from Texans trying to deny that they were flat broke and needed the US to bail them out of debt or they would end up the northernmost state in Mexico. Texas does have the right to split up into five different states and technically they never did give up any of there pubic land to the federal government. That counts for something doesn't it?
