Half of me rests in a shallow grave dug hastily in the midday sun, the churned sand freckled with my blood. It's nothing like you'd expect.

...

Though I was there at dawn I blinked and missed the explosion. I'd waited patiently as the night burned away along the razor's edge, and I'm not a patient person. The sand had contorted to my shape and I sat, legs crossed, elbows resting. I sat and stared into the sea pondering infinity to the symphony of creeping waves inching towards me as the morning bird's greetings were carried on the wind through the reeds and grass. The gentle rustling, the droning crashing rocked me with their tender lullabies. Thick lips, plump with complacency nibbled at my ears.

Deluged by serenity, I sat. An errant line misplaced in the masterpiece.

As my eyes opened, the glaring sun violently straining between my lashes, my hand reached out for you.

Sand.

Closing on air, on memories, intangibles. Smiling images. Ephemeral projections. I pull off my ring, wrapping my fist around it. I seek to crush it but only cut a thin ribbon along my palm that I spread between my middle and pointer finger.

It leaks and breaking, I follow its example.

I wail, sobbing openly and unrestrained, with such force that my ribs feel as if they will burst from my chest. I don't know for whom I'm crying. For myself? For pity? For sympathy? It's been over ten years since I've cried and I can't stop now.

The beach respects my emotions and the waves take to slithering up the flat beach, the birds drop to the ground to rest and the reeds bend against the wind, their haunting crescendo drowning my anguish.

When the façade cracks it crumbles, pearls shattering against the dry ground that drinks greedily.

I scream and hurl the ring down the beach where it lands in an explosion of sand. Before the last specs are settled I'm on my feet chasing. I'm on my knees digging and my fingers close around it. Around you.

I dig deeper and deeper. Frenzied. The earth tears off my skin by the layers, my hands are onions with blood bubbling beneath the surface. Underneath the yellowed crystals is dark dark dirt. I smash a finger against a pale-brown egg of a rock and don't notice my nail splinter off.

I'm digging with fire. Electricity is coursing along my arms as the tiny black hairs standing on end absorb the pain. Sand is rubbing against my nerves and yet I dig and I dig. I leave ruddy stains upon the rocks I pull out, and along my brow where I wiped at my sweat.

Exhausted I sit back, panting. With care I place the ring, my ring, your ring at the bottom of my hole. It sits, covered in my blood. It sits and I speak to it. I pour out my heart, my hurt, my selfishness. I whisper of long mornings in your arms and of the way the sunlight was soaked up by your skin. I laugh at the things we used to fight over and shudder at the memories of our love. I tell of the nights I spent beside you that you never knew. I tell of my frustration, my helplessness. I spill myself upon the ring, your ring, my ring and my stories wash the blood away.

Taking a fistful of earth I let it trickle through my fingers, then another. I'm not crying anymore, but my body shakes. The ring disappears.

In front of me the sun groans as it lifts itself from the horizon, leaping into the sky. I sit and let the light wash over me, and its embrace warms me. My nose catches the faintest hint of vanilla and I remember your arms wrapped around my sides. Your warmth clutching at me.

I smile and stand, making my way along the beach. I look back once and see nothing but the waves sliding along the shore. I inhale and smell vanilla.

If you're a dude, you sound gay.

If you're a broad, you sound geeky.

If you're a puppy, you sound cute.

If you're an elephant, you sound literate.

You mean, I'm on my own? I've never been on my own. Oh no! On
own! On own! I need help. Oh, God help me! Help me, God!
