Necrosiac 43 - Pt 2
Mattaius Pitt adjusted the rearview mirror so he could take the 100th look at his reflection, then frowned at the silver blob that should have been his face.
He'd understood there would be a price to pay for coming back. Spivey had made it clear to him that no one ever came back unchanged but he hadn't expected this. He hadn't expected his reflection to be a blinding silver glow. He hadn't expected his body temperature to be constantly changing from feverish hot to ice water cold and he most definitely, had not expected to come back as the thing he hated the most.
No, that was the kicker, the insult, the almighty boot-to-the-ass. That was the thing that proved to him that God either didn't exist, or more likely, had the name "Mattaius" triple starred on his shitlist.
Mattaius Pitt... "Mattaius Eleanor Pitt"
He said his full name out loud despite himself while he silently pondered whether or not a name should mean anything to a dead man.
He glanced towards his supposedly sleeping partner then gave her a shove as the smirk on her face betrayed her amusement at his middle name.
"Hey! Eleanor you bitch"
He supposed he might chuckle with her under different circumstances but the knowledge of what he had become had put him at the brink of self destruction. He'd been doing his best to keep the truth from Terri but she knew him too well and he understood that there would be questions before too long.
He tried to turn his thoughts towards what he would say to her when the time came but his treacherous mind returned nothing but snide responses. He found himself completely incapable of broaching the topic and comforted himself with the understanding that, he couldn't have foreseen the day where he would have to tell Terri he was undead, that he had the hunger and it was growing stronger by the hour.
The hunger.
He had been so shocked by his condition after he crossed over that he hadn't noticed it at first. When he finally had, he'd passed it off as a side effect and hoped it would eventually go away but it hadn't. It had begun to get stronger and hadn't stopped and now as he looked down at Terri he though he could detect a glow under her skin that wasn't magic but something else... something wet.
He tore his mind from its downward spiral and spoke loudly.
"You know I don't think you've ever told me your middle name"
He glanced from the sun cleared winter road to Terri to find her looking back at him thoughtfully.
"Malificent, if you must know" she replied.
"Damn it. I was hoping for Abduhl"
"No such luck... Listen, Matt..."
"Yeah"
"We need to talk"
"I know"
"You're going to tell me what really happened with the Hag right?"
He opened his mouth to reply but closed it again as the words on his tongue melted in place, as if they were made of snow.
"I'm scared Matt"
He glanced at her again then turned his attention uncomfortably back to the road as the look on her face confirmed the truth of her words.
"I've seen you fucked up before but never like this" she continued "I've seen you go through hardships most people couldn't imagine, but I've never seen you look the way you do now. I've never seen you look so afraid"
"It's OK" was all he could say.
"I'm scared I'm going to lose you"
He took one hand off the wheel, did his best to smile bravely and gave her a friendly pat on the leg.
He tried to find the words to tell her that she had already lost him, that Mattaius Pitt had died on the floor of an old woman's filthy apartment but all he could muster was
"Things have changed Kiddo. They've gone beyond our control and there isn't any way to put them back the way they were"
"Goddamnit Matt! Stop speaking in riddles! You owe me better than that!"
The fear induced anger in her voice caused him to jump and he mentally chided himself for not treating her with the respect she deserved.
"I'm sorry, you're right"
"You're going to leave aren't you?"
He gave her a worried look and tightened his hands on the wheel.
"You've got that expression on your face. The same one you had when you left the Corp"
He sighed then nodded ruefully.
"In the end, it's going to be better for us both if I go. I don't have a choice and I promise I'll tell you why, but first, let's get to town, find the bitch responsible for all of this, and kill her"
"We don't even know for sure if she's..."
Mattaius slammed on the breaks and brought the heavy agency sedan to a screeching halt, the force of their sudden stop sending them both painfully into their seatbelts, then stared straight ahead and said
"She's there. She's there and she's in full bloom"
He opened the door of the sedan and got out before his partner could utter a response then walked to the front of the car and held out his hand towards her.
"Stay there" he commanded "It's not safe"
He walked up the road another hundred feet then held his hand out and watched as one of the glowing black flakes of magic falling from the sky landed on it.
"What is it? What do you see?"
Mattaius turned back to the car and his partners head jutting out the passenger window.
"It's snowing" he yelled back "It's snowing death. There are flakes of Mobian magic falling from the sky"
"My God... Matt... look at the trees"
He turned and looked at the line of timber on the side of the road closest to him, to find that the trees within the zone of the black snow had turned the reddish orange typical of dead coniferous. A quick look told him the story was the same on the other side of the road, and for as far ahead as he could see.
"Sweet Jesus"
The sound of a door opening told him Terri was exiting the sedan so he returned to meet her half way.
"You make the call. I'm going to get some flares set up. We don't want anyone driving into that"
Several minutes later, content that he had enough long-burn flares deployed to deter an Alien Mothership, he rejoined her at the side of the road.
"How far do you think we are from town?" she asked
"Little over a mile" he replied, then pointed down the road "I think it's just over that hill... Terri. I need you to stay here and make sure no one does anything stupid. I need you to make sure no one follows me"
She turned towards him, her brow creased defiantly, and shook her head.
"No fucking way Matt. You're not pulling any hero shit on me. We both stay here or we both go in"
Mattaius put a hand on her shoulder
"Kiddo, you can't go in. It's not safe"
"My Tatts will protect me"
"You don't know that"
"Well then you can't go in either"
He looked at her sadly for a moment then sighed and said
"Yes. I can"
"Why's that?"
"Because I'm already dead"
"Matt..."
He cut her off with a kiss.
He kissed her hard and deep then stood back and took a last look at her. He memorized every line, wrinkle and perfection in her shocked face then landed one perfectly placed right cross on the tip of her chin.
Her lights went out as if a switch had been flicked and he quickly stepped forward to catch her before she fell.
He carried her to the car, strapped her in, placed the keys in the ignition, locked the door and slammed it shut.
"Love Ya Kiddo"
He turned away from her and did his best to remember her without the tears falling from her unconscious eyes, and then walked down the road towards the setting sun and the abomination on the other side of the hill.
Scared and broken hearted and determined to make the Necrosiac pay dearly for every soul it had ever touched.
He wasn't sure if he'd ever believed there was a hell but he swore that, if there wasn't, he'd build one just for her.
Half way down the highway, he ran his hand over the small of his back to wake Spivey then waited for the familiar pinching of skin as his Tattoo slid up to his ear.
"Sup Chief?"
"Spive. Get your game face on" He growled "It's time"

Wait a sec, what about Madeline? Lilith and Madeline can't be in that same town together, it's too coincidental. Is one of them going to live? Cuz you never told us who Matt was going after...I'm onto you snark...

out of sheer boredom, i went and just read the first in this series. soon i'll get through them all. if they are half as good as the first, then my + and 2 keys are going to be worn the hell out.
i hate to be a linkwhore, but i think you might find this interesting:
http://www.ubersite.com/m/48761
it's one of my ubermadness entries. when writing it i thought to myself: wouldn't it be interesting if there were people with the "power" living among us, affecting the tides of world history and events, some good, some evil, and most humans will never know?
anyway, i really like this series. probably one of the many excellent series on here that gets no attention.
