After reading Rad's CSP commentary (see http://www.ubersite.com/m/58180) I wondered why anything bad that's related to a child is such an outrage. I mean, I agree that it is, but I also believe its horrible if the same thing happens to an adult. Then I was struck by an odd thought. Why is killing a police officer worse than killing my McJob neighbour?
At first I thought that "hey, these guys put their lives on the line for us, so when they are killed, that's a travesty." Well, construction workers put their lives on the line, and when they die, its "well that sucks, but when will the new mall be finished?"
Then I figured that when a cop is killed, the rest of the cops take it as a personal offense. Isn't their rapid investigation and prosecution fueled at least in part by revenge? If my wife was murdered, I'd be pissed that the cops were focusing more on their best friend than MY best friend.
It hit me: its because a police officer is there to enforce the laws created by the government. When someone kills a police officer they are attacking a part of the system. Its the first baby step of damn near every revolution: if you can't cut off the head, kill the enforcers first. This must be it. STOP THE TERRORIST! Go for the Death Penalty... for one murder... um... YEAH!

Yet another person offering an opinion on a subject they know NOTHING about. Stick to talking about what you DO know: living off your parents, smoking weed and internet porn.

Power. Whether real or percieved, cops have it. Famous people, rich people...the playing field is never going to be level.

people who target any specific group are basically the same. if someone targets brunettes, that's no different than targeting cops. if the brother-/sisterhood of brunettes reacted the same way would that be accepted? and because of what cops represent, then the killer is attacking the system itself. taking a life is taking a life. can i get off on a lesser charge for killing a crackhead whore?

I struggle with this too. Apparently the only thing you can still get the death penalty for (in theory) in the UK is killing the queen- why is it worse killing her than a nurse or a fireman or a builder or something?

People who kill cops usually know it's a cop. The difference is often intent. Murder is different than manslaughter (drunk drivers). Killing a cop is percieved differently than killing a neighbor because of what the cop represents. He/she is serving the public, and the brotherhood takes it personally and seriously when a cop is murdered. Sure, the neighbor might be a more honest, caring, upstanding person, but the cop is a cop. That's how it's always gonna be.

i think that police officers should be respected for what they do, but at the same time, it can go overboard when the whole "revenge" factor comes in. show no mercy to a killer, whether their victim was a cop or a gas station clerk. murder is murder.

The 2x4s, hammers, and nails do not set out to kill the construction worker.

"Worth more than yours" isn't what I really meant there, but you get the drift.

His life is worth more than yours because his life was devoted towards protecting you and others like you.
