I was absolutely amazed about the French motorists... but I've been told the Italians are even worse. God I have some sweet French driver stories... one afternoon I just sat on our verandah in Paris (above a five-way intersection) and videotaped the traffic jam.

I found walking around Venice, Rome and Sorrento to be perfectly safe last summer.
Certainly no worse than any other European country.
