The gates are down. The barbarians have entered the city.
We are doomed.
We always knew it could end like this. The vastness of the empire, the breathtaking ambition of it all. The corruption within the city. The granting of citizenship to outsiders. The random brutal acts of the autocracy.
It was a beautiful dream when it was built. Equality, justice, freedom, knowledge. A shining example of the civilized world. Everyone believed in the dream and worked toward it.
Then the evil that men do began to creep in. Civil war. Assassination. Tyranny. Worship of ourselves as gods. Veneration of filth.
Some may say that this is an inevitable progression, the evolution of the state. That may well be true. To that end, I will not take up arms against the invaders but work from within to dismantle this once-golden citadel. I will take a piece of the dream in my hand when I leave this place, and that way they will never be able to possess the entire thing.
I will remember.
