------------------------------------------------------------

The knock at the door made her lose count, not that it mattered. There were thirty smaller tiles inside of each larger tile that clung to the ceiling. Thirty thousand six hundred and twelve tiles covered the entire apartment. Ten thousand five hundred and forty-eight gray tiles, seven thousand eight hundred and ninety-one tan, six thousand eight hundred and fifty three brown, two thousand one hundred and two white, two thousand fifty-seven black and plaster could be seen in a hundred and twenty-three spots where the former occupants had plummeted to the floor.

She stared at the ceiling, starting again from the far left hand corner of the apartment as she had so many times over twelve years. Her father was in his room still sleeping off last night's bottle. He had staggered in after four; his breathe heavy poison against her ear, his fingers cruel and biting through her thighs. When spent, he had collapsed on top of her, unconsciously pinning her. She had lain there exhaling, hoping he would crush the life from her. While swimming in a velvet soup of stars her body had betrayed her, bucking him off, drawing breathe. She had crawled from his bed of pale stained sheets to doze in the shower after scrubbing herself in the dirty water.

The knock came again, more forcefully. 'Police! Is anyone home?!'

Freezing, she looked towards her father's room and hearing his snoring undisturbed, pressed her lips together and climbed off the couch. Dropping her weight and pushing upon the old wooden floor to try and silence its groan she slowly worked her way across the cluttered apartment. Around clothes, trash, and empty bottle she paused with each shriek of the dirty floor. Tasting blood in her mouth she reached the door, unlocking first the bolt then the chain and with closed eyes opened it, shivering at its squeal of restraint.

Before her, haloed by the morning light streaming through the hallway window, were two men in lightly wrinkled clothes. The one on her right, tall and black with a grey overcoat, smiled down at her and flashed her a badge while the man on her right, shorter and Hispanic, asked for her father.

'He's sleeping,' she replied quietly, her eyes on the holster she had seen underneath the black man's arm.

'Do you think we could come in honey? We have a couple of questions for him.' As he talked he stepped into the apartment, his eyes scanning the room.

The black man knelt next to her, 'How are you dear?'

She heard commotion from her father's room as the officer woke him up. Loud cursing, shushing, low talking. She turned to the man next to her, 'I'm-'

'Don't you tell them anything!' her father exclaimed rushing into the room and grabbing her arm tightly. 'Who the fuck do you think you two are?' His gaze swept back and forth between the two detectives who stood comfortably, veterans of these tirades.

The hHispanic officer answered casually, his hands sliding into the pockets of his pants, 'We got a tip about a drug ring being run out of this building. Thought we'd check it out as we were down here, figured we'd start with you, Pete. As you're so on the up and up.'

She rubbed her arm as her father released it, already feeling the bruise bubbling up to the surface of her skin. Her father laughed his short lying laugh, 'Drugs? You know I don't deal in drugs, Jones.'

The officer offered a slanted smile, 'Oh, you remember us now?'

'Yeah, yeah,' her father waved them off and walked past them into the kitchen, opening a cabinet and reaching into the back of one of the top shelves. 'Don't you cops have anything better to do than bother people?'

'Well, we tend to leave the honest people alone, but with your profitable side business...'

Her father lit a cigarette, 'I arrange meetings between men and women, nothing sexual.'

The black man spoke, his deep voice rumbling around the apartment, 'You're a fucking pimp, man. Don't dress it up. We've seen you, others have seen you, it's getting harder and harder not to just close your little entrepreneurial enterprise down.'

Frowning, her father leafed through the stack of bills he had pulled down, 'See, it's so much easier when you just get to the meat of it. How much? A hundred? Two?'

As she saw the detectives grin at each other tears began to trickle down her face. She franticly whipped at her eyes, but to no avail. Soon a sob, then another erupted from her. The detectives turned to her, 'What's this Pete? How badly did you hurt your girl?'

The Hispanic officer crouched besides her and offered his handkerchief, soft white silk with the initials EL stitched in the corner. She shook her head no, unwilling to soil it, but he pressed it into her tiny hand.

Shooting her an angry glare her father started counting off more bills as he stepped around the kitchen table. 'Three hundred? Four?'

Standing and motioning for her to hold onto the handkerchief, the Hispanic man shook his head. 'I don't know, this might be a case for SVU... what do you think Jeff?' he asked looking to his partner who was considering her with a familiar look.

The black man knelt next to her, cupping her chin and brushing errant strands of hair from her face. 'This is a beautiful girl you got here Pete, such a beautiful girl. Going to have trouble controlling all the boys filing in and out of here when she gets older.'

'I'll see what I can do.'

The officer stood, his hand resting on her shoulder, and she could feel the heat from his palm through her thin shirt. He looked to his partner, 'Maybe we can work something out Lopez. Save Petey some money, after all his girls do work hard for that.'

She turned her large drowning eyes to the Hispanic whose smile had turned hungry. 'I think we can arrange something,' His tongue slide along the back of his top teeth. 'Petey?' he implored.

Her father raised his eyebrows and nodded, smiling as he slid his money into his back pocket. He didn't even say anything, just pointed at his bedroom as he put his coat on and walked out of the apartment.

Herded into the bedroom before the two officers, she wasn't crying anymore. As the door closed behind them she opened her clenched fist and the handkerchief drifted to the floor.
