Before we begin, you must understand that there's no cure for me. None at all. You can't cure someone who doesn't want to be cured. I'm sick to the bone, to my core. My mind is a dark, bitter and twisted place, and my spirit is battered and bruised. I need you to sit still, be quiet, and listen. This will be my first and last confession.
I'd think about it when I was younger. The voices were my security blanket; they were also the first step to letting it all slip away. I always knew I had a purpose in life, not to be a doctor, a scientist or a father, but to be a judge, to free the life that was worth living.
The young girl that you loved so much, the child that you called your own, the child that found happiness in painting pebbles and rocks for you, the child you lost. It was I who set her free. I had to do something before it was too late. She would've grown to feel and think in the same way that I do. I wasn't going to let you do that to her. I couldn't. She looked adorable in her white linen dress. She loved the deep pockets on that dress. She'd fill them with the rocks she was going to paint for you. You didn't deserve them though Lola, and you sure as hell didn't deserve such a beautifully innocent child.
That afternoon when you put me to bed with a fever and told the young girl child to play out back while you entertained another overweight middle aged married man, that was the day I saved her. I heard the child singing to the birds outside my bedroom window. I wanted to see her smile, which always distracted me from my self-destructive thoughts about you. I climbed down from my bedroom window and took the child by her hand. She took my hand, kissed it and smiled at me. It was like she was thanking me for what I was going to do for her.
We walked through the fields collecting rocks for you. She packed so many rocks into her pockets that they were wedged there. I then led her down to Cleven Lake. I picked up a handful of pebbles to throw out into the cloudy water. She loved to imitate me, and soon enough she was holding out her hands for the pebbles. Watching her throw them was the proudest moment of my life. I knew what I had to do, even before the voices started at me. She didn't speak or even cry as she started to sink, but her wide eyes were calling out to me. All I could do was wave her goodbye. I stayed with her until the end. When the last ripple in the water disappeared I returned home to my bed.
I can still taste her in the air whenever I go back to the lake.
You cried for days after they fished her out of the Cleven. You cursed the finger painted rocks that were set out neatly on the mantelpiece. I was satisfied.
Lola, so much life has passed through my hands, I had to let it slip away. You may curse where I came from and what I've done, perhaps you should, but this is who I am, the man you gave life to, the creation of a whore... But what good can come from life that's loveless? I'm your answer mother dearest. I'm your fucking answer.
You stayed the distance, and that's why you can never leave. I'll be back to tuck you into bed when I'm good and ready.
