He sat down, took a long slow drag from his cigarette, and waited for the bus to pull into the station. Sunlight glinted through the light rain as it rebounded playfully off the oil-stained pavement; the raindrops dancing between the feet of pedestrians as they walked, oblivious to the rains' suicidal gambol. Streams of water snaked haphazardly across the windows of the colossal skyscrapers; the behemoths of concrete and glass built on the dreams of the few and housing the shattered dreams of the many.

Nobody says 'I want to be middle management when I grow up.'

He watched the emotionless faces of people he would never know file in and out of the large glass structure directly across the street from where he sat. They paid no attention to the beauty in the rain; the way the sun made the effort to peal through the dark, steel-grey cumulous clouds that hung ominously over their heads; the wind twisting the water across windows.

Natures' etch-a-sketch.

The rain slowed to little more than a mist in the air, a breathable soup of humidity; the late afternoon sun shining deep orange through the ethereal haze. He loved the smell of the world after a storm; coppery and electric. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, the cleansing aroma unleashing a torrent of memory.

Splashing through puddles with his father; running frantically from his father's truck to the back of the auditorium where he was starring in the school play; sitting at the window, wishing he could go outside to play; sitting in his car on a first date, hesitant to make the first move; standing outside her house 3 years later, wishing he had never made a move at all.

Scent is the strongest link to memory.

Slowly his eyes opened and he looked around through the Vaseline haze and wondered what the rain invoked in the memories of the people passing. He pulled his battered duffle bag closer to his legs; the contents of which consisting of everything he cared to own. He smiled briefly at the freedom this bag represented for him. His father once told him that he would rather die than lose sight of the beauty the world offered, and so many took for granted. At his fathers' funeral, he promised he never would.

He took a long slow drag from his cigarette, and waited for the bus to pull into the station.

The simplest questions are the most profound.

Where were you born? Where is your home? Where are you going? What are you doing?

Think about these once in a while and watch your answers change.

It's sad really.

Dude, the more I read this the more I love it.

Very good show.

I'm a sucker for the snapshot in time stuff and this was one of the better ones I've read on this site.

I really liked this.

I enjoy rain, and the writing was encapsulating..

Ah, I don't even know what I mean by that. I'm sure you could say it better.

It was a +1 for me...

but Richard Bach = auto +2. Anyone who hasn't read his stuff, do. I especially like Illusions.

Mother...FUCKER!! That is the best damn thing you've ever written. Friggin' awesome, man. I have absolutely no criticism to offer here.

Is that a fuzzy picture of you? If so, you are one cool-ass-James-Dean-looking mofo.

Wow, I don't know what to say. Thanks man, I finally stumped you <insert maniacal cackle here>.

Yeah that's me, and it's all about the angles.

good stuff as usual but I'm still waiting for more elemental. have you given up on it? Do you have it finished and don't wish to post or are you just being lazy?

Ok, ok, I guess there's an outside chance that you're just busy but damnit get on it!

=====

I haven't given up on it at all, I'm just not sure where I want to take it from where it is right now and I don't want to force out some mediocre crap.

I've been working like crazy for the past couple weeks and only sleeping about 3-4 hours a night, so I haven't had time to do much of anything except drool on myself and almost kill people with my sleep deprived driving.

I've hired some more people recently so I won't have to work as much and then I'll get to play more.

I want to be middle management when I grow up. You have the luxury of a skill set that can be applied in almost any department, managing people is an important skill.

One day I hope to manage a midget in a top hat and tails, he can follow me around and pick up my used cigar butts. Of course I'll have to relocate somewhere like Russia to be allowed this luxery, but everyman needs a dream.
