Reading "the definition of chipolatte" got me wondering, what do people's screen names mean/come from?
Mine means to " be shut up" like in jail....which is how I feel at work a lot. Some of course are kinda obvious, but like Chips there has to be some good stories behind some of them right?

Well my real name is Matthew Owen, on my P.E kit at school (think it was the rugby kit) i had Mowen written on it. This being too long for my adolescent friends they shortened it to MO, which of course are my initials. Quite ingeniously is decided that as i am a man (of 22years) and i regard myself as a lad i would devise an email adress/uber name that encompassed all this core elements. The end result became Momanlad. Sometimes these things just come to you...

My name comes from the French existentialist Les Gens Sont Etranges, he was was a misanthropist who lived with pigs such was his mistrust of the human race. His swine wore human clothes, one was dressed as his son and it smoked on a pipe and wore a dinner jacket. A sow wore a dress and a bonnet and she lived in high society with many ladies, was a dab hand at Bridge and was nicknamed his fille douce.
It is commonly belived there are many chimeras begot of this sexually passionate relationship between the frenchman and his porcs aimés whom populate France this very day and enjoy an endless supply of bacon.
Or my name could have come from a Doors song :¬p Do I really need to link to this?

Otter (amongst others) was a nick-name given to me in the Marine Corps. My middle name and name I go by is Otto.
Years later is was resurected by a co-worker and oddly enough, at the same time my girlfriend at the time gave it to me. Something about liking to dive for oysters.
Maybe it's because I'm cute and furry and like to swim on my back.

"Istaros:
Have you studied Persian? It's one of the few Indo-European languages I'm not familiar with."
No. I'm not familiar with any ancient languages, although I must admit I would like to be.
And I made a typo; I meant "ishtar" not "istar." Of course, proper spelling probably doesn't matter much in a language in which the current alphabetical system was nonexistent, but whatever.

It does rock, Razor. And by formulating my moniker to represent coolness, I become all that is cool!!! Well, at least can envision self-coolness. Maybe it will work and others will recognise the coolness that is me.

Once upon a time there was a really awesome song. It was an anthem, it was a mantra, it said everything and yet nothing at all. A boyfriend dedicated it to me over the radio when I was in 5th or 6th grade. I was soooo cooool. Here are the lyrics from the David Essex version I have on my computer:
Oooooooh........shoop - Hey kid, Rock and Roll, Rock On, oooh my soul. Hey kid boogie too, did ya? Hey shout, summertime blues, jump up and down in your blue suede shoes. Hey did ya Rock and Roll? Rock on. And where do we go from here? Which is the way that's clear? Still looking for that Blue Jean Baby Queen - Prettiest Girl I ever seen - see her shake on the movie screen, Jimmy Dean - James Dean, Rock On, Rock On. Hey kid rock and roll, Rock On.
And then it repeats a bit and ends with Rock On. Rock On again and again. Wow after seeing it in print it looks pretty pathetic. Oh well, I will stay Blue Jean Baby Queen.

i'm boring. s.k.y. my initials. i like that they're my initials and like to show off. lately i've been soozanna, snoozanna, scoobanna, siouxanna, & boozanna (my name is suzanna). sometimes I'm tempeststorm. When I was 16, we were making a video (not that kind of video!) called 'tempest storm and winkie go to paris' and my friend 'winkie' and i drove around and filmed our local hick town pretending it was paris. We had the day off for the start of hunting season. I didn't know who tempest storm was, but all of the sudden that became my screen name. silly.

Think of the simplest possible explanation, and it tends to be the right one.
This maxim does not, however, apply to my name. Ockham has nothing to do with it.
I thought it was cool when I was 13 or so, and I still do.

Are you sure it wasn't that little turtle was scared and wouldn't come out?

beer-turtle was used because I was certain that turtle was already taken.
Turtle came from a a few years ago when I was into the rave scene and basically having my second childhood. I was under the influence of X, LSD, K, alcohol, weed, coke and some other random pharmies and I had a beanie baby Turtle in my pocket. It was soft and fuzzy and kept my hands occupied. I had the bright idea of running over to my friend Jessie (a hot little red-head stripper) and told her to "Kiss the Turtle" and I jammed the beanie baby in her face.
She kissed the Turtle and gave me a hug. I thought I had a magic power to make women kiss the Turtle. I proceeded to my friend Pixie, also demanding that she kiss the turtle. She did and it further reinforced my belief. About 30 women later I was convinced.
The beanie baby became my club signature, and night after night I would get mobbed by my femme friends who wanted to carry my turtle around for the night. 2 or 3 months later, my little beanie baby got stolen from me. But whenever I came into the club, I would still get people running over to me and yelling TURTLE!!!!!
So it kinda stuck.

When you might read my name, you might be like "oh, this guy likes to toke." But, alas, no. My name is derived from a Bong, but not a weed Bong, it's from a beer bong. In typical frat boy fashion, which adds to the sterotype, my fraternity has a beer bong and we named it BongZilla because it's massive. In a dedication to inebriation, BongZilla is 2 stories tall, holds 24 beers and usually takes six men to clear. We have competitions between two groups of three, you can imagine the beer debris when such a debacle is over. No I don't smoke, which is Ironc, because im a "frat boy."

I can see, however, that "istar" is obviously cognate with "aster," "Stern," "stella," "star," etc.
I think the root was *@ster- or something like that.

Contrary to Vlinvictus' or Vlindictus'(or whatever the hell that guy's name was) intuition, mine is not from Quenya, and I detest the suggestion that it is. It comes from the ancient Persion word for "star," which is "istar."

Kaelic:
I immediately recognized your name as Celtic, and I verified which country of origin here:
http://www.crosswinds.net/~daire/names/celtbrmale.html
(Celtic Male Names of Britany)
It comes from a form of Micheal. Many Christian names were adapted to Celtic languages very early on when the people were converted.
My first thought was Irish Gaelic. I guess we learn something every day.
By the way mine would be:
Cairistìona ... Common. Derived from the Latin Christina, a female form of Christianus, meaning a follower of Christ. The name was that of a Roman virgin martyred in Bolsena in 295, and was brought to Scotland by Queen Mairead (Margaret) in the 11th century. Occasionally spelt Cairstìona. Cognate with Christine. See Ciorstag, Ciorstaidh, Ciorstan, Criosaidh. (Morgan, s.n. Cairistìona)

Nynex was interesting. Thanks for sharing. Tina asked me if Kaelic was Irish ... I didn't want to post in that thread, so I'll post here. I think Kaelic is an ancient arabic name, from something I read on-line a long, long time ago. It could just as likely be made up, but it'sjust a coincidence that it sounds like "Gaelic", a celtic language. Kenneth is a celtic name, however.

oh, and one more Nynex
this was one of my original handles dating back to the days that Nynex was the main provider for telephone systems in the new england area. Before going out of business/selling to another company I used to do what was called "phone phreaking" a lot. While nynex was still in business I had obtained many items from their inventory to include, payphones, neon signs, road signs, stickers, linesman hand sets, and other things relating to the company. It just kind of stuck from that day forth. Nynex stands for New York New England Exchange!
