It had been a very uneventful morning so I decided to leave the station and go for lunch.
I went down to the motor pool and picked out my favorite unmarked cruiser.
I had only been with the department for 4 years but I was a "rising star" and besides it
matched my suit.
My plan was to go downtown and visit my old hunting buddy at the Eddie Bauer store
I knew he would be upstairs in his office knocking down a few shots of blue label for lunch.
I couldn't afford such luxuries but I knew if I came up with a new "old hunting" tale, the
bottle would be shared and I could "knock down" a couple on the sly for lunch.
I pulled the cruiser up to the front of the store and parked in the loading zone. As I
got out of the car I noticed a commotion on the other side of the wide avenue.
The beat officer and his partner were confronting a man, deep inside the doorway of
an old store. The store was the type that had the entry door recessed 8' to the rear of the
display windows on each side of the walkway from the sidewalk.
The man had placed a pregnant woman, in front of himself as a shield. He had already
stabbed her in the stomach, breasts, and was holding a knife to her throat.
The store had been closed for months, and various homeless people had been using it
as a campground. I had no idea what had prompted his actions, and at this point, it
really didn't matter to me.
Both officers were keeping their distances at around 20ft. Both were in the street about
15ft apart from each other so as to form a triangle. Neither man had a clean shot, as the
man was much smaller than the woman and every time either officer moved in on the man,
he would stick the woman in the neck with the knife in his free hand. He was, what we call,
a true 51/50. She was not going to "bleed-out" but the probably of serious injury
increased with each move and conversation the beat officers attempted to make.
Both officers had holstered their service revolvers, partly because there was no shot to be
had (due to the narrowness of the foyer), and also because the man had calmed down a bit
when the officer's weapons were no longer pointed at him.
I didn't have that problem. Being across the street, in plainclothes, in my unmarked cruiser,
I had a straight on, partial head shot; when he peeked out from behind the large pregnant
woman to yell obscenities and check the position of the two officers. He was a true 51/50.
I spread out on the front bench seat of the cruiser and rested my Colt 357 Python on the
drivers side door with the window down. Whether he was crazy or not, didn't matter. He
was going to go down "hard.
He stuck the woman, again, in the neck, and I almost touched off a round. She was starting
to bleed quite a bit now, from the 4 puncture wounds, but with only a half of a head to aim
at, and 2-3 seconds to fire I decided to wait for other chance. It made sense to call the
watch commander and tell him my position, my intent and maybe receive some "seasoned"
advice. The other officers were backing off, even more now, in an attempt to further calm
the knife-wielding man down. They were on the normal police channel and had no idea that
I was across the street. The department had just installed a "tact", or B channel, and that's
what I used.
Within 10 seconds, I had the watch commander, the chief of detectives and, it seemed,
every "high value" badge on the force talking into my Motorola, all at one time.
"11 where are you?" (Multiple inquiries)
"I'm across the street and directly in front of the building" "Its close, but I got a shot"
"11 you got a shot" (now 1 person)
""Yes" "I swear to god I'll only hit the creep"
"11 you sure you want to shoot him"
"?"..................."I swear to God I'll only hit the creep!"
"11 get out of your car, walk to the corner, cross the street, go to the back alley, turn left.
and come to the rear of that store".
"???".........."say again"
"11..... holster your weapon, leave the cruiser, walk to the corner, and cross the street"
"you know the alley that runs down the back of the stores?"
"yes"
"2, 4 and myself will be waiting for you there" " Hurry"
"10/4"
.
As I left the cruiser and starting walking across the street, I was so pissed, at being pulled
off the scene, that I almost took a left when I reached the sidewalk on the other side.
Since I was in plainclothes, I figured I just walk down the sidewalk to the entry to the
store, with my handgun by my side, spin around, and blow the motherfucker thru the door.
But I didn't
Orders are orders
As I turned into the alley......

As much as i dislike the police, this is good storytelling and that's what you'll be marked on.

Great, you write with such detail I couldn't decide whether you were writing fiction or a description of something that happened to you. Excellent.

Well Joe, if I could give you a plus 3 I would.
You stole my heart with "Colt 357 Python". By far my favorite revolver out there, accurate as fuck and the sexiest trigger squeeze around. Mine is always close, blued 6" barrel and wood handle, I love it.
I spent a few years as an MP in the Army and ran into some pretty hairy situations but nothing along these lines. I can't imagine the focus it would take after seeing this guy stab a pregnant lady and not doing like you said walking right up to the fucker and blowing the back of his head out.
Good shit Joe good shit.

Okay. Nice start.
One time on the firing range, we were doing the hostage taker drill. My smart ass decided that I was going to blow the bad guy away, and against better judgement fired at the paper target.
The rangemaster had a series of pivot points and rope so he could manipulate the paper target behind the hostage target. As the bad guy would duck behind the victim, I found that I had a tendency to follow with my weapon.
Rad = dead hostages.

It's ok and I'm interested to read the second half. Seemed to be lacking something though. Not sure what that is or how to explain my feelings in more detail, sorry.
