Alex found himself stranded in a dark and desolate room. It had no light and no way in or out.
It was so empty, cold and barren, that being alone here was worse than being in the company of the ghosts of villains.
The eerie chill filled his limbs and he bit down on his lip and tried to will away the sterile feeling that was piercing his soul.
After a moment that seemed like an eternity, the desolate passageway filled with a soft and calm sound.
At first, the words seemed to be an incomprehensible pattern of gibberish, but as the moments passed Alex's ears adjusted to the meaning.
You dont have to stare
You can always walk away
You can leave anytime you like
Its your choice if you want to play
The voice carried an aura of dignity and class, soft and well spoken. The person who was speaking was clearly sophisticated and dapper. However, the voice also had the feeling of coldness and sterility which gave Alex another chill.
The voice repeated the rhyme once more, almost as if it expected a reply.
Alex closed his eyes, let out a soft exhalation of air and spoke out himself "Hello, is anybody there?"
The voice spoke out, "Pardon, is there actually somebody there?"
Alex opened one eye and gazed ahead, the company of anybody would be preferrable to the terrible nothingness which surronded him "Yes, my name is Alex and I dont know how I got here"
"Stay where you are, I will be with you in the blink of an eye"
Alex doubted whether he could move if he wanted too, his feet were firmly planted into the floor and showed no signs of losing their adhesive property.
The darkened hallway suddenly began to light up, the sound of light bulbs being turned on filling the air.
As Alex lifted his neck upwards to bask in the glowing light, soft piano music began to fill the air and Beethoven's Fur Elise enwrapped and cloaked him.
The darkened hallway suddenly seemed inviting and Alex felt sheepish for his misplaced fear and was starting to feel very calm when he heard another greeting "Welcome dear boy"
Alex turned his head and looked to where the voice had come from, standing beside a doorway that
he could have sworn did not exist stood a short, stocky man wearing a tophat and a big smile.
No sooner then he had seen the man, did he know everything about him.
The man was cultured and sophisticated, had great taste and was the personification of the worldly
gentlemen.
Alex did not have to ask, he knew that the voice he had heard clearly belonged to the mysterious
stranger that stood before him "Hello there Sir, where am I?"
The man opened his mouth and gave a beaming smile which put Alex at ease "My dear boy, you are in the greatest place on earth!"
Alex swallowed slightly "The circus?"
The misplaced comment seemed to amuse the man who gave a loud rumble of laughter and quirked an eyebrow "Although we have a B.T Barnum exhibit, this most certainly is not a circus"
The man moved forward as if to greet him, extending his hand in a warm gesture "My name is Doctor Arthur Mephisto and this is my museum"
Alex reached forward and shook the man's hand "Your museum, how did I get here?"
The Doctor laughed once more, filling the small hallway with his voice "Does that really matter ? You have arrived at the greatest museum in the world and you trouble yourself with the smaller questions when the answers to the bigger ones are waiting for you just behind that door"
"Doctor Mephisto, I am sure your museum is an amazing place, but I really just want to know how I got here and how I can get home"
The Doctor pointed to the door with his gloved hand and raised an expectant eyebrow "If you come for a tour of my museum then I can take you for a walk and show you some exhibits, by the time we finish our tour the afternoon taxis' should be arriving and they will take you anywhere you want to go?"
Alex scoffed "Even to my front door?"
The Doctor smiled and put his hand on Alex's shoulder "Of course, You shall have a guided tour with the curator and then the taxi driver will take you to your front doorstep and deliver you safely to your friends and family"
Alex couldn't help but wince slightly "I have no money to pay you with"
The Doctor laughed once more "Money is something that I have in abundance, but the chance to educate young minds to the ways of the world is something which I can not often indulge"
The doctor walked towards the doorway and took Alex with him, stopping just short of opening the door "Please, do me this boon?"
Alex tried to think up an objection, but his mind drew a blank. The doctor had shown him nothing but kindness and the least he could do was to go for a walk around the museum with the kindly stranger "Okey Doctor, show me your museum"
The Doctor's face contorted into the largest smile yet and he threw open the door, "With pleasure, my friend"
