In 6 hours, my best friend for the past 15 years will be put to death. My best friend to a kid who's never had that many friends. 95 pounds of chocolate lab, ending his existence, and I'm the one who gets to walk him to the executioner's chair.

His eyes don't gleam like they used too. His body is covered in tumors and growths. His hind legs have nearly given out on him. Rising each day is a struggle. His throat is worn so his bark is a rasp. He's 90 years old in human years. And still he manages to get up and greet me at the door when I visit home from college. He still wags his tail when I talk to him. Still gives me the same grateful dumb stare he's always had when I give him a treat or scratch behind his ears.

Still gives me the look of eternal love and gratitude that all dogs give their owners when they pay attention to them, even though its limited now to my sitting on the floor beside him and rolling the ball to where he's laying, too weak to move anything in his hind quarters but his tail.

You've been with me through just about everything buddy. My first hunting trip, to my joining the military to my finally going off to college. And now, 5 days after I graduated, I get to take you to the vets office and say goodbye to the dog that watched a 10 year old boy grow into a man. My final act for the greatest friend to a kid who's never had that many to begin with

Goodbye Max. I love you. Let everyone up there know that I'm trying.

Get really drunk.

Cry, then laugh about the silly things Max did as a pup.

Then get a puppy within 3 days.

Name him Max II.

Sorry. That's tough. It makes you think about why we even get pets when deep down inside, we know that they'll expire before we do. Then, I step back and think of how much joy my cats and dog bring me and I remember why.

My condolences.

He's at peace where he is now...tell him to look for "Sidler" and "Laddie".

They're the coolest dogs in Doggie Heaven, probably over by the golf course up there, chasing broad dogs and peeing on the ball washers.

We had to put my 13 year old lab to sleep about a month or so ago. It was awful. Here's to endless holes to dig, kiddie pools to pee in, and plastic plant pots to destroy.

My parents had a vet and a priest come over when we put our dog to sleep. I was living over seas and the first few times back I would still be looking around for her to pop her head around the corner and start wagging her tail when she realized it was me.

the shot put him right to sleep. his paws were trembling when he was put on the table though, he knew something was up.

he's better off. can play fetch whenever he wants and his testicles are back.

My best buddy's been with me for 10 yrs. He's a big German Shepherd and he's pretty slow when he gets up from lying down. He also can't do long walks like he used to. Thinking ahead to when I might have to do this absolutely kills me - I am hoping to find a vet who'll make a housecall. Nothing can ever take the place of a great dog, not even a great person. Hope you're doing okay.

This sucks, faggot, but you have to tell your baby, and yourself, that he/she is going to a better place. You're doing the humane thing.

Since I moved to SC, I have put down a 16 year old German Sheppard mutt, and had a 15 year old greyhound die basically in my arms.

So I feel for you...only not to close.

The hardest thing I ever had to do was have my dog put to sleep when she got old and frail and her body started breaking down. But, after it was all over, I was glad I was the one that took her to the vet and held her through the whole process, because it really was just about the most peaceful and pleasant way one could be dispatched from this mortal coil.

Humans should be so lucky.

Heartbreaking. I said goodbye to my dog this year, I thought she was going to make it though and so I didn't give her a proper hug. Then mum sent a text message later that day saying "Bess' gone".

I still didn't cry, I still haven't but I fucking feel like it now.

I have that lump in my throat. :(

I broke my arm in 2 places sparring, have gone through numerous breakups and personal tragedies, and haven't cried once in the past 2 years.

Then I went to hug the damn dog goodbye before bed and I broke down right there. Then he started licking me and that didn't make it any better. I've given up on sleep for tonight.

So yeah. Definitely on the crying part
