Here's an interesting situation....
I'm in charge of hiring some temp worker to do some light assembly work for us. I posted the ad, put myself as a first contact and my boss as a second contact. Consistently, people are asking for him. I'm the first contact. Eight people have called, mostly girls, and seven of them have asked for him....Doesn't make any sense!!! UNLESS, it's because I'm a woman. It's like the weird situation in an office when a woman calls and is bossy to another woman but then sweet as pie to a man, even if he's in a less powerful position.
I'm not bitchy to people on the phone, or email or anything. I like it when they're bitchy to me because I can reply and be super sweet and nice and then maybe they regret being such assholes. Well probably not, but who cares? :)
I just think this is interesting...they assume he makes the ultimate decision and skip right over me? Our titles aren't listed in the ad we placed, we don't even list what company we are.
god i'm bored. i wish those people were calling me so i had something to do....

I fear car salesman. Actually, I fear blowing up on them like I always do.

Loren, will you go with me the next time I buy a car? I hate the haggling part and usually force some transplanted NY Italian to go with me to be the heavy.

loki, I eat car salesmen for dinner. Even my male friends bring me along to haggle.
My X-BF even took me with him to conduct the deal on his latest car, and he weighs in at almost 300lbs. He's very very scary looking to boot. Good stuff.
Okee dokee loki?

hahahahahaha.
i win.
we got all these calls from these students (it was posted on a university board) and I made the final call. Silly people that didn't ask for me! The girl that asked for me wins! I bet she's thrilled, she gets to assemble a filing cabinet. how fun.

I ran into this buying a jeep once. I had a friend of mine with me, who is a flamer in a way that makes Parth look like the girl next door. I was asking questions about ground clearance and torque and he kept trying to answer flamer who was at the time frolicking around and posing in front of various jeeps to determine which one he would look best driving. Flamer figured out what was happening and wandered off so then the guy didn't know what to do since there was no one there to talk to at all. I left, went across town, and bought it from a different dealer. I called them later to let them know that this little stunt cost them a cool easy $25k.

Maybe because women, in general, don't really like other women. There always seems like this deeply buried animosity between women... I can't figure it out.

It's because you're a woman. No doubt.
They think they'll be able to woo the male boss more easily than you. Unfortunately, even if it's subconsciously, it's still part of "the game."
If I were you I would give the interviews to the men and women who followed "directions" and called you first. It reflects their character... or lack thereof.

Yep. I'd say that people typically look at males in a position of authority over females.
When you tell people you went to the doctor or got pulled over by a cop, don't they always assume that they were male? I pay very close attention to that. Gender discrepencies do not apply in my life. My roommate (a girl) makes calls to order pizza, records her voice on the answering machine, etc. Many things typically left up to the 'male' to do. I think it's time we get more contemporary and realize there's no difference in many respects.

Women are intimidating to women. Women judge more vocally then men (generally) and so they are more intimidating. Unless you sound like the sweetest most nicest cutest women there are going to be girls out there who are intimidated by you, because a lot of women think they can just "charm" their way into the job if its a man. (Just a theory among many)
antluvdog had a great point too.

I have an ad out too for my business. My business partner's name is first (he's male), mine second (I'm male too). We get about an equal amount of calls; I may even get a few more than him. My theory for your case would be that most people are so ADD they don't make it through the whole ad and just skip to the end. They just see JOB and look for the number at the end.
