I am new to this site. I have been reading all of the postings for about 2 months, and I love the site. This is my first posting, and I wasn't sure waht to do it on. So, I have decided to do it on the one thing I know best. Guitars. Some Questions:
1.Favorite Guitar?
2.Favorite Guitar YOU own?
3.Top Ten Bands/Songs:
4.Favorite Genre?

Thats all for now. I will probably succumb and end up putting rants on this page, but trust me, they won't bash Loren or Hidden101.

1. There are a lot of cool ass guitars out there. Personally right now my fav's are Strats and Gibson SG1

2. I own a Fender Stratocaster (custom built), a Washburn 5-String Bass, a Fender Duo-Strat(good starter), and a cheap harmony acoustic.

3. Favorite bands are: Tool(gods of everything), Led Zep, Hendrix, SOAD, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Flaming Lips, Dead Kennedys, Primus, Marley, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rage(RATM), and a whole lot more, but these are the cream of the crop.

4. Metal, Classic Rock, Alternative, Blues, Reggae, Old School Rap, Gangsta Rap, Techno, and Jazz.

Slightly off topic question: I want to learn guitar, but don't quite have the time for lessons. How do I go about learning it on my own?

Lets see the guitar i really want is a gibson acoustic that i tried out in Memphis at the Gibson guitar factory. It was cool cause it had inlay mother of pearl stars on the fret board plus on the body of the guitar. it had a banging sound to it to. As far as owning a guitar i have a guild scoustic, not sure what model though. its a good guitar - i have been happy with it so far. I would love a martin and i think my next investment however will be a mandolin.
my favorite bands/artists are: jeff buckley, sublime, nickelcreek, bela fleck and the flecktones, patty griffin, the new amsterdams, no use for a name, save ferris and i like way way way to many i can't think of all of them right now. ROCK AND ROLL MAN.

I play a Washburn because I cannot afford a classical guitar. I play classical, duh. My favorite things to play are Villa-Lobos and stuff I can sing to.

Flatuloso, yuo like zebrahead as well eh? Cool, I love them. I don't recommend starting on or ever playing a sqiure, not unless you like to learn about heavy maintanence(sp?) I recommend getting a used or onsale Ibanez, Epiphone, some type of signature series guitar. Jsut because it is your first guitar doesn't mean you have to get lower quality. Sorry, I have a personal vendetta against fender. It pisses me off.
Peace,

If you want to hear some of the most wicked guitar playing ever there's only one person you need to hear from. Yngwie Malmsteen. He's a swedish guy, pretty cocky, but well deserved. He played better and faster than anyone else I've ever heard.

Honorable Mentions:
Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai

1.Favorite Guitar?
The ol' stand-by: Fender Stratocaster, but I like some of the custom axes I've seen out there.

2.Favorite Guitar YOU own?
I'm a four stringer in a metal band and the one I have is an Amos four string bass. Yeah I never heard of Amos either, but it was only $200 in the pawn shop and it sounds great. I had a dark blue Fender Strat bass, real beauty, but it was destroyed when another band member went on a Who-like instrument smashing tangent and decided to put mine through the amp. Fucker. He was dismissed after that little incedent.
I also have a custom made Flying V with Fender hardware and a Harmony cheesy thing, both of them six string guitars.

3.Top Ten Bands/Songs:
Iron Maiden-Somewhere in Time, Run to the Hills, Angle and the Gambler, Heaven Can Wait, Alexander the Great, Nomad, Drifter, Can I Play With Madness?, Sun and Steel, Powerslave

Helloween-I'm Alive, Mr. Ego, Still We Go, Steel Tormentor, Save Us, Guardians, I Can, Push, First Time, Number One

Megadeth-Hook in Mouth, Hanger 18, Launch the Polaris, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?, Almost Honest, The Punishment Due, Symphony of Destruction, Train of Consequences, Angry Again

Def Leppard-Rock of Ages, Hello America, Rock Rock Till You Drop, Do you Wanna Get Rocked?, Rockit, Hysteria, Demolition Man, Slang, Let it Go, Gimme Action Not Words

Queensryche-Best I Can, Empire, Resistance, The Needle Lies, Revolution Calling, Queen of the Ryche, Take Hold of the Flame, Burning Man, I am I, Sign of the Times

Metallica-Am I Evil?, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Master of Puppets, One, Enter Sandman, Of Wolf and Man, Hero of the Day, Fuel, Trapped Under Ice, Ride the Lightning

4.Favorite Genre?
Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Hard Rock, 80's Metal, Classic Rock, Symphony, Classical, Some Jazz

good starter?
get a squier strat.... decent enough to begin on...
but if youve got money go LTD maybe...
or a jap fender. whatever tickles your fancy.
acoustic?
get an art & lutherie if you can find one... theyre rare but the GRREATest budget guitars around... budget is used loosely...
cheaper than a seagull, or godin guitars, but twice the quality/workmanship

I don't know how to play guitar... yet. However I have a passable singing voice and wouldn't mind being in a band at some point. I'm just curious as to what a good, starting guitar might be for someone who wants to learn rhythm guitar without spending a rediculous amount of money. Also, how long does it generally take to play well enough to carry along in a song? I'm talking about five to ten hours of practice a week or so. I've also played piano so I am able to read music and whatnot.

In terms of Music/Genre, I listen to a lot rock along with wierd bands that for whatever reason don't resemble my usual listening habits at all. They include: Ours, Queen, Led Zep, Guster, Live, and They Might Be Giants. I also like Ska quite a bit- except it's such an eclectic genre that I have no idea what bands are decent or what class of Ska I like.

now for my top ten songs:
1. Bohemian Rhapsody (of course!)
2. Superfreak
3. Demon (by guster)
4. High and Dry (yeah I like slow gay rock songs, can you tell?)
5. Dizzy (by Ours)
6. Peaches
7. Blister in the Sun
8. Rocking the Suburbs (I saw Ben Folds in concert and he is the bomb-diggy, so to speak)
9. Playmate of the Year
10. I'm the Only Gay Eskimo

I chose the last three because of their excellent lyrical value.

Schecter or Gibson are my favorite types of guitars.
My favorite guitar will be a Schecter Omen 6 2003 Left-handed will be my favorite if it ever comes in stock to get sent. It will also be the first one I've actually owned.
My favorite band is Presidents of the United States of America followed by (not in order) Stone Sour, System of a Down, AC/DC, Mudvayne, Godsmack, Metallica, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Favorite genre is alternative/rock.

Shit. I share favorite bands with Jizzo. Nirvana and SOAD rule. Drowning Pool...not so much. I like Beck a lot, especially his new CD, Sea Change. It's pretty mellow, but it's fucking great. Nice to fall asleep to. Led Zep: Always. Beatles, Of course. Bloodhound Gang is actually a pretty sweet band, despite the funny, disgusting lyrics. I got a Hohner Acoustic guitar that I can sorta play. I can play "Chop Suey" and various Nirvana tunes...thats about it. And that's my extent of knowledge about guitars.

2 because im pleased.
I've deecided that I should fill it out too, just to give you an idea of my tastes.

1. 1973 Les Paul Standard. best I have ever played. But, out of all the guitars in the world, i would have to say Electric: ESP Explorer
Acoustic: Taylors/Martins maybe Larivee

2. That I Own? Would be my Martin D-12 12 string. definitely one of the bes sounding guitars EVER. compliments at gigs, frfom anyone who hears it. and its rather loud, but the tone is balanced.

3. Not In Order:
Metallica (early heavy stuff) I've been listening to alot of it of late, and I am enjoying it.
Godsmack's First CD: for anyone who likes any Godsmack (Awake, etc.) I Definitely Recommend the First, self titled, CD. It is amazing.
Joe Satriani- his playing is thoughtful and unsurpassed, although the full on shred assault has us running for cover, not "feeling the music".
For The Love of God-Steve Vai. Great song, the melody you can sing to, and there are no words to forget!
Iced Earth- Good Tunes. not very popular outsidee of the metal community, but they have great songs. Their "Tribute To The Gods" album has very good renditions of "Burning for You", "Black Sabbath" etc.
BLACK SABBATH! - But only with Ozzy, not a fan of Dio....
Ozzy Osbourne- especially the Randy Rhoads albums.... Zakk is a mind blowing player, but randy invented shred. Sorry Mr Van Halen, you did Eruption, but randy was going wild before that. plus he infused alot of classical elements too, whereas your style is largely pentatonic blues....
*it may seem like all I listen to is Rock/Metal, bput it depends on the mood. just about anything with a guitar line in it, i will listen to, unless its Avril, Enrique, etc...

4. As mentioned above, guitarish music, anything that has six strings and good bass/drumming.... I don't mean technical good, but good Feel/Sound. NO POP
classical, country, i like, but only certain artists / composers, and in small quantities.

LEAVE MORE COMMENTS!!!! :)

Favorite Genre:
Black/Death Metal, Classical Guitar.

Bands/Artists:
Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Vivaldi, Chopin.

Demilich, Monstrosity, Morbid Angel, Miasma, Immortal, Burzum, Emperor, Samael... the list goes on.

Favorite guitar: Martin acoustic (I'm trusting my gf on this)
Favorite you own: Gibson something-or-other (I only own one)
Favorite bands: System of a Down, Incubus, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Slipknot, Drowning Pool, to name a few.
Favorite genre: anything with a guitar. Even Jazz, even bullshit country. I'm serious.

1. Acoustic: Either top of the line Ovation or one of the hand made C.F. Martin's from the early 80s (they used higher grain wood then)
Electric: Gibson Les Paul or Paul Reed Smith guitars, either with 3 humbuckers.

2. that I own: an American Standard Tele and an Ovation Celebrity

3. bands/songs
Led Zeppelin is God. Top songs by them: Kashmir, Whole Lotta Love, Custard Pie, No Quarter, Immigrant Song, Bron-y(r)-Aur (stomp and regular), Good Time Bad Times, Dazed and Confused, Any zep song is better than most everything everyone is doing now.

Bands besides Zep? Hmm, The Who rock. Alice in Chains were decent. Blind Melon. Bela Fleck. Jethro Tull and Lynyrd Skynyrd (both had good guitarists). Allman Bros. Nirvana was decent (people always say rock guitar died with Kurt Cobain, everyone fails to point out that flannel also died with him). RHCP are good - all original sounding stuff. Pretty much everything out there today sounds recycled or cliched. Coldplay has a fairly good sound. Not many bands today that combine and original sound AND can actually play their instruments. If I see one more Blink 182 copy (Sum 41, and those other guys that look and sound just like them) I am going to shoot someone.

4. Hard Rock, Classical, and Folk/Bluegrass.

Favorie guitar: Ibanez RG series, double hummbucker, lockdown, 3 tone, with a wammy bar. Yeah. I own an epiphone. I can't remember what kind. I bought it on sale and it is a really good guitar, it just doesn't have the features that my Ibanez had. Epiphone is actually owned by Gibson. Funny story, Epiphone hired Les Paul to make Gibson guitars, then Epiphone went under and Les Paul was widely successful, so he bought Epiphone and saved them from going under.
As far as acoustic, I loooove Ovations. I have an 81 Ovation Matrix. It kicks ass.
My favorite bands are Aerosmith, ICP, Ween, The Refreshments, Roger Clyne and the Peace Makers, Rancid, NOFX, ZebraHead, Deftones, nad old Korn(although I don't hate the new, it's just not as good as the old) ALso listening to Riddlin Kids, Maroon 5, Dismemberment Plan, Me first and the Gimme Gimmes.
I don't listen to any certain genre. I like a little of everything.
Peace,
STREETPUNK

Favorite band out there right now? Anthrax. I just picked up a few more of their cd's and I've never had so much fun banging my head while driving in my life. And shit it shakes my house!

I got 2 guitars, don't know how to play them for shit. I want a bass though, I'd learn that. There inlies the power, in the bass.
