Original piece was written in the Spring of 04'. At the time much of my world was infested with Cicadas. It was great. I miss them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is in these days of spring I am clearly reminded that we are not the only creatures that call earth home. If you are a resident of the Mid - Atlantic States you do not have to look far to find my inspiration. Should you live elsewhere, and are unaware or unaffected by their presence, you may be unable to follow along. Admittedly, you must "know them" to truly experience their awe-inspiring zest for life. My source, my "muse" - Magicicadia Brood X. The Periodical Cicada
I have a great fondness and admiration for these little creatures. At times my appreciation borders on jealousy. After all, unlike Humans, the Cicada enters into this world full of purpose and with a clear mission.
The Purpose - Procreation
The Mission - Sex
In fact, from all I can gather nothing of their own doing distracts them. They emerge at maturity, with a full stomach and do not require sleep. They are limited by design. Therefore, they do not spend much time wandering afoot or by flight. Their only other apparent vice, making music, is purposeful. They sing songs to attract suitors. Perhaps not as beautifully as Pavarotti but I dare say far more effectively. To summarize:
The Cicada Way
Song
Sex

Not a bad way to live, right? Keep in mind they do not intentionally harm themselves or their own kind. Nor do they cause irreversible damage to the environment that supports them and future generations. Sadly, their Porta Via comes with the catch that they have a very short and inescapable time period to complete their assignment. It should be no mystery then as to why they just take care of business. It's their nature. They do not make choices. They have no free will.
So next time one of these red-eyed buggies lands on your car, on a piece of your clothing or, God forbid, in your hair, be a "lover" not a "hater." Help fulfill its purpose with a flick toward a nice Oak or Willow tree. In the meantime, although our lives are more complex, our purpose less clear and our mission full of obstacles we can learn from the way of the Cicada. Decide you purpose, plan your mission and go for it. Once you get it, enjoy it and teach others how to do the same until you die.

When did that become a rule? And who the heck is on so often that they even take the time to notice that someone has posted twice.
+1 for the post.
+1 because the review before mine was a hack. I'm only doing this to balance the rating, so it will get at least a fair shot from other people.
