Fighting for your country means fuck all.
Yeah I said, I went there.
It means nothing, nowt, nada, zilch.
Except conscripts in WWII that took some balls.
Nowadays though? Iraq? Afghanistan? Get fucked. You KNEW the risks when you took the easy ride into the army. The army pays for me to learn a trade, the army puts me through college, the army gets me out of shitkick, iowa etc. I'm too stupid to do anything else.

I am fighting for freedom! (A particular brand of freedom that we will force down your sand nigger throats so help me God.) I am fighting to avenge the twin towers. I had a friend/brother/co-worker in that building. Hey guess what they must have been some big ass buildings because it seems everyone knew someone. Did they hold 6 million people?
You aren't bravely fighting for freedom you are, with overwhelming muscle and weapons superiority (but with less brains and tactical nous than say, Electro), doing what you are paid for. The army isn't all running, jumping, climbing trees shouting "kick ass!" and slapping each others bottoms in a totally non-gay way you know.
Yeah, you are doing your job, poorly, but don't try and tug on these heart strings you pampered overpaid under worked buffoons.

I, as a conscientious objector, would never pick up arms in a foreign war but even if I were not, I would NEVER participate in or support any immoral imperialist crusade such as the ones begun, waged (badly) by Herr Bush and Commondant Blair.
(I will however defend myself and my loved ones, if need be.)
By the way, I am so fucking sick of hearing people use the WTC attacks to justify war in Iraq! Iraq had NOTHING, n-o-t-h-i-n-g at all to do with it.

Speaking from personal experience I've recently come home from a tour of Iraq and I must say I never saw any sand niggers while I was there. However, I do recall seeing lots of Iraqi women and children, and boy they were really annoying, shouting and screaming at out unit as we totally took out terrorist positions nearby. Who gives a fuck if these terrorists were like husbands or fathers to these worms? These insects have no respect for OUR way of life, OUR high standards and the American way (they even prey to a lesser god than us for fucks sake). Anyway I soon got sick and tired of trying to liberate the dirty hook nosed Arab bastards from a life of tyranny and evil and couldn't wait for my tour to end.

So what about those of us who joined the Marines out of an undying love for our nation. Don't you dare group us in with the rest of the fucks.
There are plenty of us who are very intelligent young people who joined for a variety of reasons including patriotism and the desire for a little adventure. Most Marines would rather be in Iraq than sitting at home. Fuck, I had to join the nasty Army just to get back to the desert.
And as far as the military being for people uncapable of independent thought, think about how the Marine Corps takes an 18 year old high school grad, with little or no direction in life, mediocre grades, and an uncertain future ahead of him, and within three years, has him in a posistion where he takes global effecting decisions in split seconds. The young corporal leading his fire team on a recon mission during peace-keeping efforts in Africa, wieghing the evidence to fire or hold when coming upon some attrocity. Hey cou d start a war with his reaction. And the country rests their saftey on his back, excpecting him to do the right thing 100 percent of the time, without failure, and will turn on him a heartbeat for taking the wrong step. And he is incapable of independent thought?
Trust me, for those of us from the military, civilian life can seem strange at times. I oft expect my employees to act like Marines, carrying out my orders to the tee. Thats not the way things are though, and I find it hard to adapt to their way of thinking. My way is the best as far as I can tell. But I freely admit it does not work in the "real world." And that makes my job as amanager very difficult.
Anyway, fuck you seriously, I love the military life, and look forward to doing it full time again soon. And as far as my typos, I have a fucking cast on my right hand from rugby, so quit stealing monkeys.

If all these soldiers were fighting for the honour of their country, and freedom, and all the other bull we're being fed by the media, then why, now we're at war, are both the UK and the US having trouble recruiting for their armed forces?
That's not to say that there aren't soldiers there who believe whole-heartedly in what they're doing, but they're not in the majority. It's a job, like any other, and they get a pay cheque at the end of the month.

This post isn't about blaming the soldiers. It's about stopping the bullshit. Soldiers aren't the fucking pope, they are employees of the state and as you implied, they are NOT fighting for your country or freedom orany other buzz word tingles your inner pride. They reserve respect, like policemen, but they are not superheroic saints who fight off evil alien invaders on a daily basis.
As Avals mentionned, the US are NOT the only country engaged in wars.
However, as apollo so beautifully put it, you guys are the ONLY ones who are ready to canonise them.
Now why would that be? Because the Brits in Iraq or Canucks in Afghanistan or French in Ivory Coast or whatever are not fighting for their country? Their lesser soldiers?

How I feel about the events going on right now and how I feel about the people who would
step up for me in the event of war are two different issues.
I don't even have to be of their religion, race, political persuasion, sex etc and those poeple
would still step up for me. They would set aside their lives to go defend mine. I can't not
respect that. Like I can't not respect the men and women who who run into a burning house to
save me.
Who are the ones to blame? Who are the evil ones? The people in power who
use lies and fear to line their own pockets or the people who think they
are doing right but are just being used? Some of those poeple have a small piece of
their soul die everytime they have to kill someone. And they come home less a few limbs,
nightmares, and missed a few months/years out of their families lives. Things
you can't heal. Things you can't get back. Do they do it out of greed? Do they
really do it out of hate? Do they do it becasue it's fucking fun????
I fucking respect that.
I also respect the poeple who would want out of this war because they know they
are being used in a political game of greed. Those people who open their eyes and
lay down their guns and say "I can't kill anymore". They would rather come home
and take the consequences than to continue in this bullshit.
I RESENT the people who use that willingness, the willingness of those people, as
a weapon in their twisted fucking games. That's despicable. God have fucking mercy

It was never a job to me. I did it for the money and the fact that the company hired everyone but locals.
I worked with people from all over the world and Canada (primarily quebec) and it lead me to leave home at 18 and move to Montreal.
But the bugs... those fucking bugs. Eyes, ears, nose, balls, nothing was safe.
We used to take those big fucking deer flies (the ones that would take a big chunk out of you), and stick the broken ends of toothpicks up their asses. Tie it to the end of a long piece of hair and have them buzzing all around the mess tent.

Snark - these bugs, if they banded together, could literally lift a man up, suck him dry and drop his carcass in a swamp. Seriously, it's horrible. They would attack my ear canals, the only place without bug repellent (Watkins cream, I love you!).

caul - I think we see somewhat eye to as far as the bullshit goes...that being politics, red tape, media hype and the lot. My point is 2 fold. First off the pay for an american soldier really isn't that great at all, and if you are single it's even worse. What I am saying is there is an underlying cause as to why an American joins the military and it's pride. The pride is inherited from parents, grand parents, history and probably a few other sources. It's no different really than any other country being proud of their history. The feeling is less nowadays which kind of leads to my second point. I really don't hear the soldiers saying "we are heros, honor us". The day in and day out soldier is no different really than you or I, and is probably plenty aware of the fact that other nations are pretty damn tired of hearing about America. What I do hear is alot of media and political asshats calling for us to relish and enjoy the fact that we have overstepped our international boundries by placing spotlight on our poor little soldier boys. Military shouldn't be held on some pedistal above all, but should sit right up there with policemen, firemen, and the like that risk thier lives doing thier jobs. That calls for something does it not?

I knew a girl who did it in BC. She said it was much different. There were no almost no bugs and the terrain was better. More rocky but less bushes and shit.
It wasn't an hourly salary, it's paid by the tree, like you probably. My first summer I sucked ass but in the second year I was paired up with some crazy asshole who really took that shit seriously. Of course there were shitty days where we only made 150-200$ throughout the day, but on the most part we did good. An average of 50$ is the max I've reached, I just picked that number to drive my point further.
Maybe you're one of those luck guys who don't get irritation between their legs (awaiting lame STD jokes) but I did, to the flesh. Thank you baby powder. Walking in wet boots all day long will make your feet peel and hurt like a bitch. Following that crazy guy required so much energy that I couldn't even eat my lunch without barfing it up 20 minutes later. As for lightning, the Canadian shield is quite high in altitude so the weather is quite fucked up and unpredicatable. And don't get me into underground hornest nests. Surely you've hit quite a few of them too.
I realize that when O enumerate all the worst things into a tiny paragraph it sounds terrible but you can pretty much do that with every job. I even miss it sometimes, compared to the jail that is working in a fucking cubicle.

A modern soldier is mainly a hero because his people says he is : nationalism. Just like you would consider your favorite soccer/football/hockey/baseball player a hero. He's also working for a paycheck, not to make you proud. So does a soldier going to risk his life in a desert he probably doesn't give a shit about for a cause that relies mostly on trademark buzz words, not reality (freeedooom!)

darko - Being an american, and against the war from it's outset, I didn't like the idea of going to war with Iraq, it seemed senseless and a blatant attempt to steal oil.
That said I am former military so it somewhat upsets me reading all these generalizations about Americans attitiudes when it comes to apelike pounding of the chest. Our military works the way it does because the people below don't ask questions of the people above. We pride ourselves on our military, it's hereditary. The soldiers really don't make any decisions as to whether we go to war or not they just go when they are told. If those being told what to do didn't listen it would be similar to a company having to shut down because the employees had no morale. The American military uses the words honor, duty, fight for freedom and country as motivation.

Tis true. I got in an argument once with a guy who was going to Iraq because he said he was doing it to defend his country. After an hour he finally cracked and admitted it was because this was pretty much the only option he had to provide for his wife and 2 year old kid. Uh, you obviously have no clue about military service. It's unfortunate that people really do think that the struggle men and women are fighting overseas is somehow less of a struggle than previous conflicts. Do you know what it's like wearing body armor in 120 degree weather? I've only been there once since the conflict began, and it was about 2 1/2 months ago. Let me tell you firsthand: those guys are heroes and are performing SERIOUS acts of heroism on almost a daily basis. Funny how you should make this statement when, for the first time during war in history, the military is an entirely voluntary force. You might say they join for the benefits of military retirement, but as a very involved member of the military community I promise you there aren't many compared with civilian life. I don't think anyone would die for a $25,000 scholarship. Aren't you British? Well: shut it. You'll grow up someday. Hopefully you'll refrain from voting between now and then. Fucktwat.
