You close your eyes and imagine a field. It might not be the sandy beach utopia you'd dreamed of, but it's calm and quiet and vast. You eventually find peace in this field. It's a peace you know will inexorably disintegrate the second you open your eyes, but you are happy now, so your lids stay shut.
You imagine a girl in a sun dress smiling at you. She doesn't say anything, but when she smiles, you just shake your head and appreciate all the good in your life. And she walks slowly through the field. She looks at you with her big green eyes and runs her hands through the cattails. And you just stand there. Silent. Happy. In awe of all the beauty.
You look left and you see a farmhouse in the distance. You don't want to travel the distance to see it up close, but you are content in knowing that it is there. And when your head slowly swivels to the right, you find that the girl is dancing. There is no music, but she is enjoying herself with the nearby butterflies.
Your legs eventually get tired and you lie down on the earth. You look up at the great blue sky. Only a smattering of clouds on this day. The girl, with a coy smile, lies down next to you and snuggles herself into your arms. You both look up and point at the sky, describing how the cloud on the far right looks like a surfer, while the one on the left looks like a panda. You both giggle and kiss and play with each other.
Night eventually falls and the two lovers fall gently to sleep in each others arms.
And when you finally open your eyes, you find that nothing in your life has changed. The world is moving on without you and you feel your heart start to pound a little bit harder. But you take a deep breath and forge ahead.

It's funny how the moments that help us believe in "heaven" are short, but the times that remind us of "Hell" can last for days or even weeks........
