3 guys pay for a hotel room that costs £30
Owner realises the cost was actually £25 and sends the bellboy with £5 to give back to the 3 guys.
Bellboy realises you he cant split £5 between 3 so he gives each of the men £1 each and keeps £2 for himself.
So the men have paid £27 for the room - £9 each, and the BellBoy has £2.
What happened to the other pound ?

The way it's worded is intentional fuckwits. It's supposed to confuse people.
Personally, I always liked this riddle. I guess I must be retarded.

Actually, they paid 25 for the room, and 2 for the tip = 27
30-27=3
3 was the refund.

Very old, though I've heard it in the form of a kid getting pies at a cricket match. +2 for cricket.

If he's as stupid as this pissing post, he's probably swallowed the quid.
I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU HAVE DONE THIS TO ME - I know I know the answer... and whatsit down there didn't explain it enough for me to understand.
I will hate you for a long time for bringing this up (ok, prolly only ten minutes).

They were supposed to pay 25 but they paid 27, which makes sense because the bellhop kept 2.
The trick is in the statement, "The three men had now paid 9 each, or a total of 27. This plus the 2 the bellhop kept for himself makes a total of 29."
The 27 is the total payment and 2 is a cost, not a payment. It just happens to add up to 29 giving the illusion of a missing dollar.

No they didn't.
They paid $25, and gave the busboy a $2 tip.
