Most drugs or alcohol beverages in large quantities are not healthy in the long run.
I've been looking over my health a bit more in the last year and a half. I've been working out, changed my diet and slowed down if not stopped drug and alcohol consumption. With these initiatives, I also trialed a few natural solutions. Two experiences turned out a bit interesting.
(I'm no scientist and the effects that will be mentioned here are only observations.)
Vitamin C - it's a well-known fact that this vitamin helps prevent a cold and make symptoms less severe. Some think it is only a placebo effect. Some others think large doses, which isn't dangerous unless you do it daily for a long period of time, really helps one's health. A scientist whose name escapes me, had pushed is daily dosage to one 1000 mg tablet on an hourly basis, instead of daily. I had a cold and figured I'd give it a try. So I popped two tablets and drank a ridiculous amounts of water. To my surprise, I felt extremely energetic, focused and my state of mind was slightly altered. One hour later, I did it again, same results. I don't think it really help my cold, but I had fun for a couple of days.
Valerian roots (in pills) - These things are suppose to relieve stress and make you sleep. I thought I could try it since I tend to not feel asleep once it's past 22:30. I tried one for a night. I woke up and felt nothing special. Second day, I tried two. I woke up at 4 o'clock and felt really weird. I sat on the toilet and stared at the floor until I realized what I was doing. I never did use these things after that. But last night I went to bed pretty late and figured I could try to maximize my recovery (I work out a lot lately) by popping three of those valerian pills. Stress relief my ass. I've never been so alert in my entire life. After half an hour of sleep, I woke up all revved up and primed, ready to take over the world. It also felt as if someone had a firm grip on my brain and could hear every single sound in the apartment. I try to go back to sleep but woke up a few time to see what the hell my roommate was doing, only to realize there wasn't anyone. The dreams were really fucked up too. I remember a Vietnamese guy came into my family house. For some reason I was 8, and he beat the shit out of my parents with a 6 foot lollipop. What the fuck?

Vitamin C is the shit. Take it and some Vitamin B within a few hours of getting plastered (before or after) and it will do wonders for a hangover.

I used to take pro plus when i was at uni. the thing is, they kept my body going but my brain would still sleep. this one morning I was so tired (but body buzzed)I'd forgotten I'd already taken 2 pro plusses. I then had a 500ml (pint) bottle of cola and the effect happened in the middle of a lecture. suddenly I was shaking and yet my brain wasn't registering anythign going on. I just had to ride it out.
caffeine. fun.
I'm now on a virtually caffeine free lifestyle, but still turn to cola when the going gets tough.

I take a combination of Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng and a performance multivitamin which keeps me pretty alert through the day. Ive found that I only need about 5 hours sleep when I take these... (think its the Ginkgo)
Before exercising I take Creatine Serum, which gives me a massive buzz and allows me to train a lot harder... dont really pay much attention to the alledged heart troubles its supposed to cause -the way I see it I was putting Coke up my nose and taking pills for years and survived so whats the worst that creatine can do ?

only one idea on the health thing, Caul... If you don't have an addictive personality and there is no sign of alcoholism in sight then consider NOT becoming a complete abstainer. I know this sounds contrary but in fact one beer or a glass of wine a day can raise the good cholesterol. Also, complete abstainers die sooner (statistically) than the men and women who use alcohol in extreme moderation. Also, a multi-vitamin (including minerals) is usually better than high doses of single vitamins. You will find conflicting theories on all of this. Whatever works for you -- that's the key.

Vitamin C is water soluable, so whatever isn't used by your body you flush out in your pee. The only things I'd worry about in large amounts are fat soluable things like Vitamin A. While it's pretty well known that it'll boost your immune system, I think the state of mind change is placebo effect.

Excess vitamin C consumption will also trigger excess diarrhea and is a an interesting way to *flush* a cold, or anything, out of your system. By excess vit. C, I mean 5-10000mg per hour - or about a whole bottle of vit C in one day. When I lived in the dorms at school, a few years back, I'd gotten the cold that was going around durring midterms week. I tried this and it worked. Was better in two days. Though, I only recommend this if you have a whole day to spend on the toilet. Be sure to drink at least a gallon of water, too.
