Gretzky to guide Canada in '06 Olympics
This is the best hockey news that I have heard in over a year, Wayne mother fuckin Gretzky will lead Canada to another gold medal in 2006. Thats right, I said it, GOLD mother fucker.
Here is the link if you want to read, but if not I will paraphrase/take out the boring bits:
http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/news_story.asp?id=127993
The rough idea of the article is that we are guaranteed that Gretzky will be there for the olymics, if the NHL decides that it will let its players have a break and play for their country, he will have a more hands on role and be more involved. This is some much needed news for a country that has been morning the loss of its favorite past time and the greatest game on the face of the planet.

"Gretzky will also have his trusted advisers with him on his management team, Edmonton Oilers GM Kevin Lowe and Vancouver Canucks assistant GM Steve Tambellini, the same team that also led Canada to the NHL's World Cup title last September after winning Olympic gold in February 2002."
"National team head coach Marc Habscheid, who was behind the bench in Austria, will be an assistant in Turin along with the familiar cast from Salt Lake City: head coach Pat Quinn of the Toronto Maple Leafs and assistants Jacques Martin of the Florida Panthers, and Ken Hitchcock and Wayne Fleming of the Philadelphia Flyers.
But the Quinn group will not be behind the bench if the NHL decided not to take part in the Games. In that case, Habscheid would be head coach."

This is more good news, we wanted the best and we got the best.

"If the NHL commits to Turin in the upcoming collective bargaining agreement, Hockey Canada will invite 34 NHL players to attend an Olympic orientation camp in Vancouver and Kelowna, B.C., in mid-August, similar to the orientation camp that took place in Calgary in September 2001. "

Cool story about the 2001 camp in Calgary, a friend of mine was at a local bar drinking with a hockey player friend of his. Little did he know what was in store for him that evening, they were just hanging out and my buddies friend saw Jarome Iginla, who he played Jr. hockey with, and went up to say hello.
My friend was in awe that he was able to have a drink with Jarome and had no idea what was about to happen. The upper level of the bar was closed off for a 'special function' that Jarome was there to attend and he invited my friend and his buddy upstairs for a drink. This 'special funtion' was a night out for TEAM FUCKING CANADA. Thats right, my friend spent the evening having drinks with some of the best players to ever have graced the ice. These are just some of the guys he met:
Mario Lemieux
Wayne Gretzky
Joe Sakic
Ryan Smyth
Steve Yzerman
Joe Nieuwendyk
Owen Nolan
I cant imagine any way I would rather spend an evening out.

In other hockey news, this story below is pretty fucking funny, It is entitled:
Hockey fight spectacle slated for B.C.
----------------------------
TORONTO (CP) - The first Battle of the Hockey Enforcers, which will put 12 players on the ice to slug it out for cash, will take place at the CN Centre in Prince George, B.C., on Aug. 27, says promoter Darryl Wolski.
"We honestly believe this is the beginning of a new spectacle," Wolski said during a news conference.
Confirmed fighters include John (The Reverend) Craighead, Patrick (KO) Cote, Lyndon (LB) Byers, Mike (The Reel Deal) Sgroi, Frank (The Animal) Bialowas and Link (The Missing Link) Gaetz, said Wolski.
"It'll be hockey fights without a hockey game," said Wolski. "And our guys won't have to sit in a penalty box for five minutes.
"The puck drops and away they go for 60 seconds."
A panel of five judges will determine winners of each fight.
There'll be pay-per-view TV of the event, said Wolski, who declined to reveal what the prize money would be.
Craighead, who flew in from Vancouver for the conference, was asked if the event would devalue hockey.
"If you don't want to watch it, don't watch it," said Craighead. "As a dad myself, I don't promote violence in hockey."
Wolski previously tried to place the event in various cities in North America, including Minneapolis and Winnipeg, but cancelled those plans when governing bodies placed roadblocks in his way. He has the approval of all necessary groups in Prince George, he said.
-----------------------------------
Just look at the nicknames of some of the guys fighting, this is a PPV event that I will be getting FOR SURE. I leave you with an image of some of what the carnage will look like.

It will be great to have Gretzky back at the helm. I'm in awe of what he did during his NHL career; a true ambassador for Canada and the game of hockey. Good post.

+2 for hockey!!
The first time I saw Gretzky play he was with the Kings. He had 9 PIMs that game, including 5 for a fight.
----------------
That must have been his only fight

I'd give my left nut to be in the same room as Steve Yzerman, although I'm sure he'd be creeped out when I rip off my nut and hand it to him.

Wayne Gretzky is the only hockey player I've ever heard of. And that's just because he was mentioned in the first Ninja Turtles movie.

Yay Hockey!
I once drank champagne out of the Stanley Cup. I know how all the players don't touch it if they haven't won it, but hey, I'm no hockey player just a huge fan.
