There is an international crisis. Action must be taken immediately to avert disaster. It could be anything from Muslim Fundamentalists with nukes in a few carefully selected cities across the globe or an asteroid heading towards the Earth. All eyes turn to America. I am not being a typical American bullshitter, just acknowledging the facts. Half the world still hasn't gotten it's shit together and the Western world spends too much time hand-holding and respecting each other's feelings to put any sort of effective plans in motion and are afraid to admit that in terrible times America acts strong and fast.
There is a meeting of international heads of state.
The President of the United States of America enters the room and begins to lay out a plan that will take a tremendous amount of resources and great personal risks, but millions of lives will be saved.
The President is a tough politician. She knows what she is doing. She is strong-willed and decisive. She is wearing a skirt, blouse and jacket.
The leaders of France, Germany, the UK, Australia, and Canada are all studying her carefully. They aren't listening to her message. They are looking at her legs. They are wondering what kind of underwear she is wearing. That of course results in speculations on how the President would look naked. She's been around the block and had a couple of kids, but she is still a striking woman, so who knows?
Thanks to these distractions, America cannot rally world leaders to act in time.
Disaster strikes. Millions of lives are lost. The world will never be the same.
All of this could have been avoided if the President was a man.

I admit that the above scenario is a bit over the top, but do you really think the world, and the average American, would accept a woman as President and take her seriously?
I say no. Not yet, anyway.
Too attractive? Everyone would want to see her naked and would be convinced she slept her way to the very top.
Too nice/mothering/nurturing? Everyone would try to strongarm her.
Too tough and uncompromising? Everyone would think she was a fill-in-the-blank.
A woman President would have to spend so much time convincing others she could really do the job that she would never have the time to really do the job.
A shame? Not really.
Guys are just pigs. Stupid, but easy to figure out.
Women are just plain scary.
If there's ever going to be a nuclear war, it will likely be started by a woman.

Ruling class? What about the working class? What about immigrants from third world countries now in the US? There are societies and cultures where women still have a long way to go compared to the 'American middle class.' It isn't just rich old white guys female politicians have to deal with.

Oh, women for sure. But that's a very personal situation. It's a lot more difficult for a woman (or man) to get personally offended by every inhabitant of a country. It's my opinion that women are generally more compassionate than men.

The fact remains that most of the leaders, a female president would deal
with, have more strenght in their penne's than they possess in their
economic or military swords...regardless of what country they represent.

You have a valid point when it comes to the perception of women in positions of power, so +1 for that. However, if we never put a woman in power, we'll never overcome the horribly unfair stigmatism. And your arguement says a lot about the treacherous insecurities of the ruling class.

A minority male will become president before a female, because a powerful, aggressive militaristic nation such as our own needs someone with balls....literally. What about Catherine the Great or Queen Elizabeth I? Both are considered to be among the greatest monarchs of their respective countries... and this was hundreds of years ago. So your question concerning whether the world is ready for a female president is irrelevant, considering that the world has already had many female leaders, several of whom had much more power than an American president wields (Catherine and Elizabeth were both monarchs). I agree with Bart that this is probably the stupidest thing you've ever written.

I'm with Dave . . . Margaret Thatcher partially disproves your theory. I say "partially" because you don't address the efficacy of having an UGLY woman President. This is why Condi couldn't do the job, there might be some men out there who consider her if not attractive, at least "doable."

I think the only way we're going to get past the typical responses ('she slept her way to the top', 'she's a total bitch', 'she's on her rag', etc, etc) is to jump in and do it.
Look at Condi. Say what you want about her politics, she's a strong person who made it to the higher ranks of politics by being smart and being a politician. It's not impossible.
