The simple answer is: because they have to. We are superior in just about every way. It irritates me to hear the Canadian fools on this awesome website (a website of U.S. origin, mind you) attempt to belittle the stars and stripes. So here is a chart to help put them back in their place. The list is endless, but frankly I don't have the time to complete it.

Who cares? Why is it so important to compete with Canada?
The Monroe Doctrine really isn't imperative to why Canada doesn't maintain a strong military. The United States has created a system where they have appointed themselves a Global economic/social/moral watchdog and have seen fit to interfere when it is politically or financially benificial. Now it goes without saying that in many of these incidents in which American military involvement took place that many people reaped the benifits of US involvement, but it also goes without saying that the US doesn't make any military choices for purely altruistic reasons.
The problem with healthcare in the US is not nationalizing healthcare in particular but specifically the cost of healthcare. The US has one of the most expensive healthcare systems in the world yet we rank 42nd in life expectancy rates. The overly litigious nature of the US, insurance costs, and education costs have a far larger impact on healthcare in the US than the size of its military.
The Canadian taxation system serves to support nationalized healthcare in Canada, US taxpayers would never consent to that level of taxation regardless of promises of nationalized healthcare, eldercare, and standardized secondary education system.

I think you need to re-evaluate the US-Canada deal. The reason we hate Canada is because everything is so nice up there. Not nearly as many social problems there. Thats because they dump SO MUCH F'ING MONEY into the social aspect of their nation. All the money we spend on a military, the spend it on the national welfare. They can do this because they have no need for strong national defense. They have the biggest, meanest guard dog in the world. Monroe doctrine dude, we are not letting anything happen to them fuckers. We could be all nice and have free medical care if we didn't have to spend so much money on the military. But we have to, and they benefit from it. Matter of fact, why don't you Canuck types start sending us some checks. You can start with me.

I have to tell you that hockey IS NOT our natinal sport! LACROSSE IS! Well...making sweater pancakes is cool too, I mean, have you ever woken up one morning and said to yourself, "I want pancakes." And then go to the cupboard, get our your syryp(sp?), pour it on your pancakes and find that it isn't sweet enough? That's where Canada comes in. lol. Haha, I must say that you are pretty funny.

And our national sport was just recently changed to be 'both.' Lacrosse is the official summer one and hockey the official winter one. And, hockey is much more popular.

Canada's French population is more than 3%
Canada's population is 32 million. Quebec's is at least 6.5 million. Let's say, for the sake of arguement, that Quebec is only 60% French and there are no French people any where else in Canada. That's still 12%.
